What was everyones favourite or non-favourite thing about going to the footy in the 80's?
-
Have to be the numero uno 1980 grand final.
I missed a lot of footy in the '80s doing motherly things lol, and only came back to the club in the late '80s, which is an era I'd like to forget.
Favourite player of the '80s - probably Rioli, but luved what Weightman did for our club as well.
-
Hey one eyed great topic !
Where do i start i will be here all night if i get going
Might have to mention a couple of things at a time .
Might do it chronologically..is that how you spell it?
-
oops hit post by mistake.
Ok 1980....pies were 50cents
I had a black& yellow tiger hand clapper
Duffle coats
Lace up footy jumpers
The Tigerettes...hmm growl...
-
oh the swanettes were not bad either
-
My non favourite thing was that we really sucked as a team after 82
the tit for tat rubbish pinching the very players who we smacked senseless in the 1980 granny with collingwoodnt drove me nuts.
actually while on 82 that grand final was the most disgraceful umpiring display ever by one glen james(i swear his spirit lives on in scott mclaren today)
I was devastated after that one.Defnitely one that got away from us.
Getting the wooden spoon in 87 was another 80s lowlight.I was there the last game against the bears at the g where if we won we were off the bottom and we went down without a whimper.
Beating Carlton the reigning premiers in 88 helped me fell a bit better though...just a little.
-
BEER IN CANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How could i forget that :cheers
-
Home game at the G every 2nd week and being able to sit on the southern wing. :thumbsup
Being crap for a fair chunk of the 80's. :(
-
Watching the reserves before the main event.
A day's entertainment :thumbsup
-
Geoff Raines
tight shorts ;)
-
I miss the form 4 recruits lol...it should come back in for each club to take 1 player before the draft. PS- What ever happened to Michael Aish lol...
-
Pros:
* Watching footy at the various suburban grounds (including at Punt Road Oval with the U19s). Every second week was a bit of an adventure.
* Standing areas squashed like sardines. Great stuff ;D.
* Getting GF tickets easily and having the ground filled mostly with the supporters of the teams involved.
* Bus trips back from Geelong after a rare win :lol.
* Agree with Moi about bringing back the Reserves before the Seniors game instead of just sitting there now bored stiff for an hour waiting. I use to get to games at half-time of the ressies game at the latest. Now with a reserved seat I rock up about 15 minutes before.
Cons:
* 1982 GF.
* The club self-destructing after 82.
* Club Recruiting Zones :banghead
-
I used to love having 5 games on a day, when they'd cross to all the scores, it was just more interesting I reckon.
-

I still get there early, but these days i'm well oiled before the first bounce lol
Actually, I don't think that would change even if there was a reserve game now lol
The hospitality at the grounds now has improved, I'll say that. Like going to the theatre rather than the footy.
Didn't mind going to suburban grounds, ie Windy Hill, Princes Park at the time, but after being spoilt with good conditions over the last 20 years, they're a fond? memory but not one I'd like to revisit.

Yeah wow - where do we start. This could take a few posts as things come to mind (Not many brain cells left) :shh
Pros
early 80's
Trips to Geelong on the Red Rattlers.
Trips to Junction Oval on the Red Rattlers.
The 5:02 Lilydale express from Richmond - Camberwell - Box Hill - Ringwood , was home in a flash, used to go to nans as folks would allways be out, have nans famous stew and watch Hawaii 5-0. Funny the things that stick in your mind.
later 80's
The Richmond Disco at Punt Road - LMAO :gotigers
Cans that you could stand on
Fences you could jump
Feral grounds you could go every second week and let them know we were ferals too. Burning holes in Collingwood umbrellas with my smoke when they got in the way.
All games on Saturday and scoreboards with updated results and horse racing results as well.
Cons
Probably the start of my alcoholism :cheers
-
For most of the 80's I lived in Sydney. Went to one game a year. Tigers V Swans at the SCG.
Could sit wherever I wanted :)
Was one of the few that even new the rules ;) . Yelling "BALL" was a no no.
And yes the swanettes were OK.
I left Vic in 1981 and came back in 1993. During that time the Tigers were crap. (but I still followed them)
-
On the plus side...
Watching the ressies
Sitting in the Southern stand watching the round 12 1988 win over Carlton when nobody gave us a chance.Wilsons handstand at the end was a classic.
Being able to Sit wherever you liked in the Southern stand.
Hot Four n twenty pie with white crow sauce.
Downside
Watching us loose too often.
Cold Four n twenty pie with white crow sauce.

Ditto...My fave comment at the footy..."Fair dinkum Richmond you drive a man to drink!" and that they did... :cheers

The most common comments I remember from the 80's were "Mr Magic" for Maurice and "Mark Useless" for poor old Mark Eustice.
-
Seriously - I would love to see us wear the yellow shorts next heritage round, I though Essendon looked ok in the red shorts and instead of changing jumpers to avoid clashes this would certainly do it. Saves changing the famous strip at the same time. :gotigers
-
Yeah, I would like to see us wear yellow shorts too, Essendon didn't look to bad. I'm annoyed that there losing streak is over tho :(

Well at least they didn't win :clapping
Something I thought I would never do would be barracking for Carlton AND I wasn't, just against Essendon. Spoon heading your way bombres :gotigers
-
Yeah the Bombers' red shorts didn't look too bad. The modern baggy ones look much better than the old tight 80's ones with Don Smallgoods on then :lol.
As for us wearing yellow shorts next time ... ah no! :help.
Btw didn't the side do the 80's RFC proud at the SCG. Just like old times :P.

Not a clear pic of the yellow shorts but here's a young David "Demir" Cloke wearing them.
