Title: Cameron Howat
Post by: Bulluss on August 05, 2006, 07:29:20 PM
What are peoples thoughts on his debut today?

He seemed to link up fairly well and run the lines, disposal was pretty good also.

Very one sided but seemed to do alright today, only one game but it will be good to see how the young fella goes for the rest of the season.

Not a bad debut. Howat wasn't overawed or anything. Yeah his one-sidedness will be eventually found out but he was able to run and get on his trusty left most of the time and use it well enough. Deserves to keep his spot next week although given our injury list that's a given.

I thought it was a very good debut indeed.

I take my hat off to him - I will admit I was worried because watching him at Coburg he's so left sided it aint funny. But he looked like he should be out there and wasn't overawed.

And at least he hit targets regularly.

I'd be leaning towards playing him for the rest of the season to see whether his worth keeping

Well Done Cam  :clapping :clapping :clapping

Title: Cameron Howat on Club Corner
Post by: one-eyed on August 07, 2006, 11:40:03 PM
Cam Howat interview on Club Corner

* Wasn't too hopeful of promotion early as he was inconsistent. But by the middle of the year he was able to string a few good games together and through bad luck (Cogs doing his knee) he got the nod.

* He was close to debuting against Collingwood but the wet conditions meant Krak got the nod whch was good coaching decision.

* Knew Wednesday he was playing against the Dogs.

* Started on the bench. Came on early with JON's injury (JON's had the op to insert a plate). Was good to come on early. Coaching staff said "go Howat go" and he was on.

* First disposal was a handball from Chaffey in the middle and he dished it off to Tivs.

* Nervous prior to the game but he felt relaxed once he got out there as footy is what he does. A big thrill to be out there. Very loud so you need to scream for the ball unlike the VFL.

* First goal - came straight off the bench in the third quarter and ran towards our forward line. Got a handball from the captain and snapped it through.

* Terry was big on conversion before the game but we didn't. He was happy with the way we going at quarter but our poor conversion costed us badly.

* Injuries mean we lose a heap of experience but it gives the younger guys like himself a go. A short term loss for a long term gain.

* Spent 2 years a Box Hill then crossed to Coburg with Andy Collins. A big influence in his career. Wasn't sure what would happen after U18s but Andy at Box Hill gave him games when he probably shouldn't but it helped him alot.

* Always been a running midfielder. Endurance has always been his strength. Not overly quick but can run out games.

* No one knew about him until the weekend. Did a few photos and autographs since. All enjoyable.

* Electrician by trade but gave that up for AFL footy.

* Hopes to hold his place in the side for the rest of the year.

* Qualifies for Coburg finals. Played 12-13 VFL games.

Howat gives a glimpse

Cameron Howat became Richmond's sixth debutant this season when he stepped onto the MCG for Saturday's clash with the Western Bulldogs.

It was a big game in a lot of ways, with Greg Stafford celebrating his 200-game milestone and the Bulldogs trying to win it for Chris Grant who surpassed Doug Hawkins as the club games-record holder.

Ultimately, it was to be the Dogs' day, but Howat's first-up, 22-disposal performance at least gave Tiger supporters something to hang their hats on.

"I was obviously pretty excited to make my debut at the 'G, but unfortunately we couldn't get the job done for Staff, we were focused on our milestone, not theirs and unfortunately we couldn't get across the line for Greg," he said.

Another top game from Cam to back up his debut. His disposal by foot  has been excellent (even hit Richo on the chest in the last quarter with his right foot) and he kept Hooper quiet.

I noticed the right foot pass, needs to show more of this for mine, if he can find a right foot he may be a chance of surviving beyond 2007, without it he'll struggle. Good skills of his left side though, with some nice precision disposal.

Things that i like about this kid is that he works very hard and runs his arse off to make it and present as an option (ala Scott West)

Runs the lines well and his disposal has been second to none.

If he can continue his work rate i dont think not having much of a right foot will be a problem.

I've been very impressed with this Kid so far. A real surprise package. Who cares if he's one sided. If he can make his own space which he is doing at the moment I don't see it being a problem. His footskills during the Brisbane game were first rate. He sure does know how to deliver the ball to someone either on a lead or running into space. Well Done Cam  :thumbsup :thumbsup

A good game this week from Cam and a win will probably see the Tiges with a 4th RS nominee for the year :clapping.

Another solid game from Howat today, i really like the look of this guy.

He works very hard and is a very smart footballer in my opinion.

Really works hard up and down the ground and with another pre-season under his belt should improve more next year.

Cam Howat missed out this week on a RS nomination. Went to Nathan Jones of the Dees. Hopefully he has a big game this week and we score two rising star nominations against the bombers in the one year lol.
Title: Cameron Howat - senior or rookie list?

Has Howat done enough to earn a permanent spot on our senior list next year or will he go back to the rookie list?

IMHO I reckon he's played himself onto the senior list for 2007.

Very happy to say I was wrong  ;D  :thumbsup

Howat will get a permanent spot coz its an easy decision, the fact hes 20-24 on our list approx, is an indictment on the senior players behind him. Will play 2007 should survive to 2008 beyond that I dont know. In the last couple of weeks, players have started to focus on his left side and hes been caught afew times, afew disposals have also  gone astray...at RFC however thats par for the course for many on our list. Hes ok for 2 years...but?

Mostly agree with the assessment (probably rate him in the 24 to 30 bracket due to the quality & quantity of current injuries), and for mine Cam is in a shoot-out with Hyde & Tivva for the L/F linkage role.

Has superior speed & more consistant disposal than Hyde, and perhaps a little less hardness.

Is probably on par with Tivva for skills, hardness & speed, and just lacks some awareness which is probably a lack of experience at AFL level.

Cam has the basis of an AFL career, however really needs to work on R/H disposal and continually improve his speed & endurance to carve his own niche.

Done more than enough for an additional 1 year contract on the list as he has been significantly more impressive than Humm.

I think Humms gone, but hes more value than Rodan lol...if we are serious 8 players will leave punt road in the next 5 weeks. 2 have already gone, another 6 to go!

Have to agree there RT.

Problem is the 2 year contract for Rodan & his lack of trade currency.

Humm would be destined for the PSD wouldn't he ?

Was one of the reasons we didn't promote Howat because Newy is unlikely to be ready to play by the start of the 2007 season so Howat may get a senior game anyway?

Browny wasn't actually right to play games with his leg until the middle of the year. So if we are more cautious with Newy in hindsight we could put him on the long-term injury list and promote Howat for the first 8 rounds.

I like your thinking MT. I want to see Howat get more of a chance next season and easing Newmo back in to it and allow him to regain his confidence is a good thing. We don't want another Brownie. Win Win as far as I'm concerned. Go Cam! Make every post a winner!

Newman, Cogs or Thursty are all candidates for a late start.

The rookie rule, as an example, can Howat be elevated for Newman, then if Newman is fit, can Howat be elevated for an alternative player, say Cogs ?

Or can a rookie only be elevated for the nominated 1 single player per season ?
Title: Re: Cameron Howat

I would have thought that scenario Darth would be okay as Howat is promoted for only one injured player at a time. I'm presuming the Club would only have to drop him back to rookie status once Newy was fit then re-promote him for the injured alternative player so it was okay with the AFL.

That's what I was thinking. We virtually end up with a extra senior spot on our list instead of having both Newy and Howat on the senior list and being one short while Newy recovers through next year. If Howat proves himself worthy of a senior spot after 2 years playing say 15-20 senior games in total over 2 years then we'll have both Newy and Howat up and running for 2008. As you say tiga it's a win-win.
