Title: Brownlow
Post by: Bulluss on August 14, 2006, 09:48:43 PM
What are peoples thoughts about the Brownlow.

Shaun Burgoyne has had a great year, he is classy and stands out. At $41 he may be a value bet.

Who does everyone else think is a certainty or a smoky for the Brownlow?

Post by: Fishfinger on August 14, 2006, 09:55:13 PM
I think Daniel Kerr. Simon Goodwin 2nd.
Smokey - Scott West.

Went the opposite to FF with my 1st and 2nd. I think Judd might take votes off Kerr.

1. Goodwin
2. Kerr
3. West

Smokey: Travis Johnstone

Glen Archer's thoughts on the Brownlow on SEN this morning - might cause a bit of controversy lol

To paraphrase, because not sure if i've got the quote quite right, but he said:

"If you rubbed off the Brownlow name and looked at it as just an umpires award, you’d throw it in the bin wouldn’t you?"

I probably agree with him, except that it is a tradition that's part of this game.  There's been so many farces to do with the award - like Geoff Raines not polling a vote in a year he won the B&F and we won a flag - to question the worthiness of the winner.  The whole night is something to look forward to.  I reckon everyone on here would have watched it since they were kids, so it has some importance as an "event".  Probably an award that was voted for by the players themselves would be more prestigious to many players, but they don't get to see each game as the umps do.

Do think Glen has insulted some worthy winners of the award though by taking some gloss off it.

I hear the AFL are wanting all players attending this year to wear black tie, as opposed to what some people have worn in previous years.  Does that mean that Tanya Buckley can no longer get around looking like she's a madam from a brothel?

Arch has never been up there on the umpires' Christmas card has he lol. He's probably still sulking over McKernan missing out. The umps despite their flaws (blind, deaf and dumb  ;D) get it right most of the time. Judd, Cousins, Goodes, Riccuito, Black, etc aren't exactly hacks  ;).

If a Tiger won it we'd all go nuts  :thumbsup. It's been a while  :P.

LMAO. Agree with Archer entirely.
It's a joke of an award.
I believe Joel Bowden also didn't poll a vote last year or was it the year before, despite winning our B&F. WTF??????
It's also an award heavily favoured by onballers.
Once ruckmen & forwards used to be able to win it but these days it's become the "onballers medal".
The umpires have NFI who the most effective player of the match was.
Personally I'd keep the name but get the coaches from each side to vote at the end of the game.

I think they would have more idea than anyone as to who had the most influence on a result.

Tradition? Blah, the award should go to the years best player. The maggots haven't got a clue and most years it ends up a lottery.

Re this years Brownlow

1. Goodes
2. Kerr
3. Goodwin

West & Judd will be thereabouts.

Anyway back to the brownlow.  My opinion should be highly regarded , lol
I think from what I have seen is that Brad Johnson should poll well ;)

I'd reckon Joel and Paddy are dead cert to get the 3 and 2 for the Adelaide game. The benefits of playing kick to kick with your brother across the backline lol.

Normally the umps get it right with the winner(s) but there are the shockers such as Geoff Raines not getting a vote despite being the B&F in a premiership side that won 16 1/2 games. Cambo was another who hardly got a vote.

The history is littered with the ones that the umps got wrong, but no one remembers because of the ridiculous nature of the award(the umpires vote) and the players that do receive the medal are usually good players anyway so it tends to be brushed over.

If the award is fair dinkum how come Carey never one a Brownlow or Ablett Snr etc?

The favourite very rarely wins because the umps are usually off the mark as opposed to the rest of us.

Post by: one-eyed on September 25, 2006, 03:31:26 AM
Brownlow Medal: Goals on run count
25 September 2006   Herald-Sun
Derek Humphery-Smith

So, who will have caught the umpires' eyes in 2006?

For field umpires, some key features of the players who poll well in Brownlows include: players who kick goals; players who carry the football and bounce; players who take contested marks; and players who just generally get a lot of the football.

What this means is that the trend of goalkicking midfielders who run through the lines and regularly bounce the football will continue to win Brownlow medals.

Would love to see Scott West win - he deserves it.

Been one of the most consistent players over the last 5-6 seasons I reckon.

Perhaps the umps may notice him more with the style of play the Doggies play - then again half the time they (the umps) are lucky to keep up  ;D

the afl must scrap the brownlow and the afl mvp award should be teh only one that counts, voted by the peers and coaches only

Goodes is an absolute gun. I have no doubt he is the most valuable player in the AFL.
He can play in every position on the field from ruck to rover from full back to full forward, well.
How many other AFL footballers have ever been able to do that?

Congrats and well deserved.

If you don't mind, ump
26 September 2006   Herald-Sun
Chris Muirden

GETTING IT RIGHT

WHO said the umps don't get it right? The five biggest games of the season according to Champion Data's player rankings were by Jonathan Brown (Round7, 262), Matthew Richardson (Round21, 248), Chris Judd (Round5, 234), Nick Riewoldt (Round8, 203) and Nathan Buckley (Round10, 202). All polled three votes as did Fraser Gehrig's 10-goal game against Richmond in Round17 and Scott West's 45 disposals in Round20.

SAY WHAT?

THE purists wonder how umpires can give votes to two players pitted against each other. The Chris Judd-Adam Goodes battle at Subiaco in Round15 was a ripper and saw them claim top votes. But what about Russell Robertson (three votes) versus Joel Bowden (one vote), also in Round15? Bowden was given a spray from his coach. ``We had a chat to Joel and his defensive aspects of his game and they were nowhere near where we needed them to be,'' said Terry Wallace after the game.

ROBERT KLOMP AWARD

IF CHANNEL 7 was still handing out televisions for best player, then Richmond's Chris Newman would have raised eyebrows for his three votes against Geelong in Round9. He had just 16 disposals and wasn't listed in the best for the Tigers.

IF CHANNEL 7 was still handing out televisions for best player, then Richmond's Chris Newman would have raised eyebrows for his three votes against Geelong in Round9. He had just 16 disposals and wasn't listed in the best for the Tigers.

Poor Hyde missed out on 3 votes after 20 possies and 4 goals when the umps mixed up #31 with #1 thought he was Newman  :wallywink.

goodes is lucky, as would have been west, cousins or anyone else who could have won it!
why do i say this
because jonathon brown scored 13 votes and he only played 10 games for the yr!
i am certain that if brown played all 22 games he would have won by 10 votes votes or more!

feel sorry 4 west, vbut as i said earlier, its a bs umpires award , means nothing, toom many bgreat champions have been robbed or never won

afl mvp award means much more

I have always held the Brownlow in pretty high regard but after hearing that moron Greg Williams carry on in the last couple of days ( I was robbed, I was robbed) it's lost a little bit of it's presitge to me.

Is he for real :banghead :banghead

Always thought he was a selfish player - an individual who chased the $$$$ but gee he's come up with some ripping stuff in the past couple of days.

Gems like

...."``I don't give a stuff what anybody says, I should have won three Brownlows,'' Williams said.

And now he's getting lawyers involved ::)

Quote

FORMER Carlton champion Greg Williams yesterday instructed his lawyers to prepare a submission to the AFL commission over the circumstances surrounding the Brownlow Medal votes in Round 10, 1993.

Williams' lawyers will ask the AFL to review the voting procedures in the game.

Imagine if every player wanted a recount for weird umpire votes. Maybe KB could get his of Keith Greig ;).

Any Bluebagger of the 90s shouldn't be having a whinge. Who knows how long the rorting of salary cap went for before they eventually got caught.

Just on that, how did Foley miss out on a vote in Round 20 against Carlton? 17 clearances and no votes  ???.

I would have liked to see West win  :( I'm not saying that Goodes' doesnt, but West deserves it.
