Title: How did we think we went in the draft overall?
Post by: one-eyed on November 25, 2006, 01:19:48 PM
Now we've had a couple of hours for our picks to sink in, how did we think we went?

Are we happy drafting one tall and 4 smalls?

Jack Riewoldt Tassie Mariners 31/10/1988 192.3 85.4
Shane Edwards Nth Adelaide 25/10/1988 179.6 68.6
Daniel Connors Bendigo 22/09/1988 183.1 78.5
Carl Peterson Claremont 3/07/1987 182.7 69.55
Andrew Collins Bendigo 17/11/1988 184.4 70.95

Like the sound of Carl - midfielder who played ruck because of great vertical leap
Excitement machine Terry described him as  :thumbsup
But I think he's said that of others in the past lol

The others, wouldn't have a clue

NFI here, but would of thought we could do with an extra tall (KPP) type player - as for the smalls they seem very light on.
One of my biatches of late is how easily we get pushed off the ball and our lack of tackling skills.
Maybe Wallaces plan is for no one to catch us, which really solves those above problems.
Then again the premiers of the 2000s have been strong (physically) teams so um er like I said I have nfi anyway.

From what i have read, it seems that this is the first draft in a while we have actually drafted kids that have footy skills.

Our biggest problem has been quality of supply and hopefully these guys can add to the young bunch coming through and improve our level of disposal.

How many of these will get a taste of senior footy next year?

I'm prety happy...was a little underwhelmed when I heard Jack Reiwoldt named, but that may be due to reading too much into the opinions of too few. The whole group seem to have huge potential from what I've read (I admit I've seen none of them play yet), so they all get my full support.

I'd dare say not a lot...maybe a game or two at most...but we still have the likes of Casserly to make his debut, and the ever improving Tambling and Polo to look forward to next year...plus maybe Hughes, Meyer and JON taking a step up, Pattison getting more game time, Polak making his mark, Rainsey consolidating, Brown, Newmo and Cogs returning,  Hall carving it up for Coburg :lol, and a little fella known as Deledio...

Riewoldt given he has already played VFL against men and Connors would be physically ready to play next year.

Like fwoy I wasn't so sure after our first two picks but getting Connors at 58 looks like being an absolute bargain. I'll still need convincing on Riewoldt. The times I saw him play he wasn't that impressive compared to the wraps on him. The other 3 being 69-70kg  :-\ will need 3 years to develop physically.

Overall we got 2 talls (including Polak) and 4 smalls which is a pretty good balance. We've then got probably Kingsley? to come in the PSD plus 2 more rookies. Can't complain with getting 9 new faces to Punt Rd.

I haven't seen Peterson or Collins play.

I'm not sure about reiwoldt - does he have sufficient speed to be a leading forward? He's a good contested mark, and seems to read the play well. I suppose when it's all said and done, if they picked him, then there must be good reasons why they did so.

Edwards is fast, brave and a good tackler. I'm happy with him.

Connors - what a bargain!

The way the draft has panned out, all those bleating that we gave up too much for Polak...well, I think we came out of that deal not too disadvantaged, especially with Connors, who we could have easily taken with our 3rd rd pick anyway.

Matt Burgan's view from the AFL site:

RICHMOND

The Tigers jagged Jack Riewoldt - the cousin of St Kilda superstar Nick - with their first selection after strongly being linked with the yellow and black. Richmond pounced on South Australian midfielder Shane Edwards at No.26, after the Crows bypassed him due to the availability of James Sellar. Midfielder Daniel Connors had many varying opinions from AFL recruiters. Several suggested Connors could be a top 20 selection, while there some questioning where he would fit in the overall scheme of the draft. At No.58, the Tigers will be pleased with this pick. Versatile, spring-heeled jack Carl Peterson was touted as a likely back-end draftee, which proved true, while Richmond always set its sights on onballer Andrew Collins at No.73. The Tigers passed on No.84 with a view to using it in the Pre-Season Draft. It looms as a very sound draft for the yellow and black.

As I said on another thread I've only seen Riewoldt play once and everyone's entitled to a bad day  ;D but please don't carry on like you cousin or you'll have me pulling my hair out :thumbsup.

I will admit that my initial reaction when I heard his name was disappointment - I just thought there may have been a few others (read Brown that's now an Eagle) ahead of him but I will bow the expertise of FJ & GM and say welcome Jack!

As for the others - as always I am concerned with their tiny bodies (2 under 70kgs and 1 just over 70 by .95 :o) but going by what I've read skill wise they seem to be what we need.

As to how many will play seniors next year - I reckon Riewoldt will because that's what they are saying and size wise you'd lean towards Connors. The other 3 - well that will be up to them

The Age trashed our picks in todays paper.

You can ignore that article, it was done by some lazy and uniformed journalist.

Foremost, Connors played for Bendigo not Geelong, and secondly he is far from slow.

IMO, Miller's comments were very good. Riewoldt, Edwards and Connors are three outstanding prospects, all a probably worth top 20 picks IMO. Peterson and Collins sound like good prospective draftees. OVerall  :thumbsup for me

The more I think about it, the more i think we've done well.

I was critical of us not having a third round pick but getting Connors at 58 means pretty much no difference in the end IMO. I'd reckon we would've taken Connors at 42 anyway. We could've have just ended up with 2 good kids plus 3 speculatives types in this strong draft but it's turned out as bluey has said that we've ended up with 3 good kids plus 2 late speculatives. The proof will be in 5 years time but I'm much more happier now than I was before Saturday.

Miller's view from the article "Every club wins in 'super draft'" (foxsports.com)

"We had a sensational day but I'm sure every club would have," Richmond director of football Greg Miller said of his club, which didn't get a look-in until selecting Tasmanian forward Jack Riewoldt at No.13.

"There are 16 very pleased clubs now because they've all got at least two really good players into their mix – every club would be rapt in their first couple of choices for sure.

"Good draft, great talent, there'll be some great players come out of this year.

"You'll look back in five years' time and you'll see how good this draft is."

As I said before I will bow to the expertise of GM & FJ and Tezza for that matter - they obviously had a plan and stuck to it and that in its self is a good thing IMO.

I am going to a THC function Wednesday night where they will supposedly be going over the players drafted - should be interesting

The proof will be in 5 years time but I'm much more happier now than I was before Saturday.

Tend to agree - hopefully will have a better feeling after Wednesday :thumbsup

Not sure how I think we went, in regards to there being a heap of "apparent" talent in this draft.

I am happy we ignored Sellar, bearing in mind the thread of his myspace page on BigFooty.  If he was going to be that good, he would not have been passed over by so many clubs.

Not seen Riew, so hope the brainstrust got this right.  I like the fact we picked up Conners and Edwards.  Should fit in well with our midfield.  Hoepfully they have good preseasons, put on some muscle and play good seasons in the magoos pushing for senior selection.

Peterson and Collins seem speculative, but the fact FJ and GM were looking at these two fills me with more confidence than the 2002 or 2003 draft with other speculative picks.  ;D (Fleming, Nicholls, Sipthorpe, Gilmore, Fletcher, Archibald and Morrison)

Some do come off though.  Raines, Tuck and to a lesser extent Hartigan and Jackson.

I am pretty sure we will take KK for a year.  (unless of course an overlooked draftee trains the house down like White) or even Perry?

Will Limbach be rookied by us?

And who will Nth and Hawthorn take in the PSD before us?  Perry to Hawthorn? A Cloke to Nth?

Will Roach get a guernsey at the Aints?  Hope he does.

Would be surprised if Thomas got picked up on their senior list - perhaps they may rookie him

Agree - I've thought all along he'd be taken as insurance in case we lose a mature bodied player

Up to Dean and how he goes over the next couple of week I reckon

2006 AFL Trading: Draft Picks Change Trade Results
insider.net
December 10th 2006

A brief look at the players who were taken with the traded draft picks. It changes some of the trade results, with who might have got the better of the deals, but with anything involving the draft the real result will be several years away.

Collingwood: Paul Medhurst, Ben Reid and Tyson Goldsack
Fremantle: Chris Tarrant and Bachar Houli
Richmond: Graham Polak, Jack Riewoldt and Carl Peterson

Still looks like a trade where every team got what they wanted, but Richmond do look like the winner here. They only moved down a few spots but still ended up with Riewoldt as well as Polak. Collingwood also turned Tarrant into a possible superstar as they used pick 8 on Ben Reid. Fremantle got what they wanted too, players to help them get to the Grand Final, and by sending out a pick and a couple of players they didn't use they got Tarrant and Solomon.
