So who was the better player? You decide.

GEOFF RAINES
1976-82
134 games (254 overall)
53 goals (99 overall)
1 flag (1980)
3 B & Fs (1978, 80, 81).
RFC Team of the century interchange

MATTHEW KNIGHTS
1988-2002
279 games
141 goals
2 B & Fs (1990, 92)
RFC captain 1997-2000
RFC Team of the century interchange

I voted for Geoff solely because he was a better player in better teams.
But don't underestimate what Knights did for this club  :thumbsup

I didn't grow up watching Geoff play, but obviously from what I've heard, he was a fantastic player... and I think I only started supporting Richmond in 2001 when we moved to Melb, so I didn't see much of Knights play either  :-\

But by going by those stats, I think I'll vote for Knights...

I only caught the tail end of Raines' career when he was pretty much past his prime, but he still looked an excellent player with great composure and balance. I've seen select games from the early 80's when he was in his prime and he definitely looked an explosive, dynamic player who had great kicking technique.

Knights was a bit more of a laid back type, one of those footballers who make everything look easy. He was never really explosive, but relied more on a creative and intuitive reading of the game to work his tricks. Like Raines he had great balance and composure, but he lacked a bit of Raines' penetration with his kicking and was more handball oriented.

I wouldn't want to say who is better not having seen enough of Raines to really compare, but from what i can tell there isn't much that separates them. Maybe a prime Raines just has the edge, but its close.

P.S.

Pretty Boy, with apologies to Knighter.

Good choice for a comparison of player.  IMO it comes down to personal preference.

For mine, Raines just pips Knighter because of his finals record.  Raines was in the top 3 for the Norm Smith from the 1980 flag.  Knights played 1 effective final in the 1st half in 1995.
