Melbourne Storm whips up Tigers

RICHMOND can be excused if some form of Melbourne Storm's highly publicised grapple tackle slips into its game next season.
Worried by their low tackle count, the Tigers have hired former Melbourne Storm captain Robbie Kearns and forward Peter Robinson to put more grunt into their play.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, the grapple tackle is outlawed in the AFL as well as the NRL.
Richmond assistant coach Brian Royal said yesterday the Tigers had decided to act to improve their tackling after statistics revealed they were among the bottom few AFL clubs in that aspect of the game.
Kearns and Robinson, who both still work for Storm, will take the Tiger players through tackling drills throughout the season.
And yesterday the players had their first lesson in the NRL style of tackling.
Royal said tackling stats showed the Tigers had been well below the best in the competition for the past couple of seasons.
"And it probably hasn't been something that we have focused on heavily, but think it's an area where we have got to do a lot of work," he said.
"The only way we feel we can improve is to get the experts in and teach our guys how to do it.
"Robbie Kearns and Peter Robinson, who have already come down to do some work with our guys, will put them through different aspects of tackling each Monday."
Royal said the Tiger coaching staff wanted the players to not only have the correct technique, but also the right attitude when they tackle.
"We are also not effective enough at locking the tackle away, so we don't attempt enough tackles," he said.
"We are really putting a focus on both of those areas, to attempt more (tackles) and then to hold on to them once you attempt it."
As for the controversial grapple tackle, the Tigers are aiming to be hard, effective and fair.

Is it just me or have the media been incredibly generous in Richmond off season coverage this pre Christmas?
We usually get a fair share, but its all about the Tigers at the moment
:thumbsup

How long have I been harping on about this - Finally :bow
-
The Swans have been doing this for many years and they are one of the best tacking sides going around so it can only have a positive effect on us just as long as the donut king John Hopoate doens't make a guest appearance. :lol

Great news and about bloody time. It'll also help that some of the younger Tiges now have physiques to make tackles stick.

Agree LT. I think it's called getting your act together after 25 years ;).
Given all the off-field schnanigans (sp?) of other clubs they are all in hiding which leaves all the positive press to us :thumbsup. Also helps that we now have footy people who aren't shy in getting in front of mike at every possibility and raving on about how good things are at Punt Rd lol. It's a week till Christmas in the middle of the cricket season and Chocco Royal is doing a footy interview on Sport 927. A bunch of media flussies :lol.

Rome wasn't built in a day guys/gals, at least now they are being taught from the start and by the time most of the side gets to 22-28 age bracket they will be slamming a few bodies.
That's if it is still a contact sport by then.

I agree CUB,
After being involved with a local rugby club for a few years now i can tell you its not as easy as it looks and takes a couple of years to really drill it into the players so they do it without thinking. It will become second nature to them if given the time.

First lesson is - Watch the hips. They tell you which direction your opponent is truly moving in.
