It has come up a fair bit on BF, and it is all quite clear that the 2011 prediction is on the money.
Our senior players aren't reliable, consistent matchwinners. We don't have a player that you'd put your house on to kick a goal, someone you can throw into the middle and turn a game on it's head, a defender that keeps repelling attack after attack.
This is why Brisbane and Essendon have improved already this season though it is only early days yet for these clubs. These teams have a group of superstars still though, Lloyd, Hird, Black, Lappin, J. Brown, Fletcher. Their 23-24 year olds are starting to lift and they have a good injection of youth to liven up the place.
Richo makes you hold your breath whenever he has a shot for goal, Gaspar makes you cover your eyes when he kicks, Bowden can kick like a no-legged man some days, while Kane Johnson is a good tagger.
We finished 9th and had one player in Sheahans top 50. We don't have a senior player apart from Brown that would get anywhere near the top ten.
There is a little hope, Schulz kicks gun barrel straight, needs to get it more though. Petts seems to be getting consistent and doesn't do much wrong, and Newman works the backline well.

is that good or bad ?

My weakness would be 6'6"+ forwards and ruckmen - oh sorry this is about the team's weaknesses.
-
i think the main weakness that we have suffered over the last 10 years is with our senior playing group.
There hasnt been enough leadership for the younger generation and we havent really had any true leaders.
We need people who dont accept second best, dont accept 95% from players, dont accept lazy training etc.
It is a disease which has taken hold off the club for years now and it is hard to get rid of.
Look at our current crop and who do the younger guys look up to?
Sugar, Richo, Bowden, Gaspar, Browny
None of these guys are true leaders and dont set the example for the younger players to follow. They are all different in a lot of ways, but i believe all have major areas of concern which younger players copy and hence the disease spreads.
It's almost as though we need to start fresh with young people, maybe a Lids or Foley etc and make them Captain and breed a new breed of Tigers.
-
think u r right bull
we have made a continual mistake at tigerland for teh past 25 yrs, we have treated the cancer but not got rid of it completely.
would not bother me one bit if all those players mentioned were gone, except for richo, he must stay because he is the heart and soul of teh club and if he went, i would fear for julzs life!
lids or foley would become one gr8 captains, esp foley , he is full of grunt, but i feel they are a bit young, give Newman the captaincy asap, he is competive and i believe could become a gr8 leader.
sugar should retire asap

That's what Blight did at Adelaide. Walked in the door and sacked/delisted the captain and vice-captains - McDermott, McGuiness and Andrew Jarman.
-
Thats what we need to do, start fresh with a clean slate.
I know its impossible but something like delisting every player and just starting from scratch. I know its impossible to do but you need people that havent been exposed to the current culture.
As good a players people like Knights and Cambo etc were i think a lot of them have developed this cancer that has spread through the club.
Happy to take the big $$$ and rest on easy street. With our long stretch of poor performance its too easy a cop out for us when we dont do well.
People are just used to it.
Someone has to come through with an iron fist and say i am sick of this crap and i wont tolerate it.
-
The perception in Adelaide was certain players thought they were god's gift to footy :shh. If your list isn't good enough but everyone at the club is realistic about where they are at then that's one thing and the coach can only change and improve the list over time. But if the players think they are better than they are and are above being offloaded (the coach will go before me attitude) then you have a problem.
-
Well our players would think they are better than they are coz for many years they have been overpaid.
You might find our players being overpaid has been the reason that a few trades havent gone through over the past few years.
Other clubs have fallen off their chairs when they found out what certain players are getting paid.

Wouldn't that be because the club still has to pay a certain percentage of the salary cap, something like 95%.
There is a giant gaping flaw in that system :banghead

Not neccessarily the reason.
A lot of our players were overpaid on the back on one good year, the club threw money at them so they wouldnt leave and they never backed up again.
-
They've still got to pay 95%, that's probably why they were overpaid.
-

As Mae West would say, Julz, forget about the 6' and concentrate on the 6+... never mind lol
-

I am sure that we have always been well above the 95% mark, infact there has been a number of times we have had a player short over the last 3-4 years coz we cant fit them into the cap.
So while i can see where you are coming from Moi, it hasnt been the problem at Punt Road.
There has also been problems trying to trade for certain players because of this high salary cap.
-

I reckon you've got a point Moi. It used to be clubs had to pay at least 92.5% of the salary cap but under the CBA I think it maybe 95%
If you have a young list with a few older blokes you are going to have to pay above the odds to hit that 95% quota. Under the CBA there's a minimum amiunt you have to pay kids that are drafted. So how do you make up the rest - by paying over the odds.
Without trying to be the proverbial fence sitter here ;D
A lot of our players were overpaid on the back on one good year, the club threw money at them so they wouldnt leave and they never backed up again.
I think you're right on that point too Bull. Look at Nick Daffy - massive contract after winning a B&F but you have to wonder would he have made the starting 18 for the top teams of the day? Answer: highly unlikely so in that respect - yeah I think we've probably overpaid.
So I suppose what I am saying is it is a combination of both :thumbsup

I think you'll find that the reason we've gone short in the last few years is because there have been budget restraints because of the state of the finances.
Meaning that we weren't paying 100% of the cap but the footy department budget said we could only pay 95% and we were right at that level due to the contracts we had in place etc.
-
It's not the case now but under Spud we were paying around the 100% mark in TPP. It might have been over 100% (legally) when you included veterans' full salary which only half counts towards the cap. Pumping money into the footy department was one of the reasons we lost $2m in one year. $$$ contracts to Gas and Holland after 2001 was symbolic of the club thinking we were better than we were. Before that in 1999 we signed our core group at the time - Knights, Cambo, Richo and Daffy - to $$$ contracts despite them failing to lead us to finals in 4 straight years and on the back of the disaster end to 1998 and a miserable 1999.
I feel heaps more confident now with Steven Wright in charge that our dollars are being significantly better managed and spent. Almost the antithesis of those times prior to the 2004 election. In any case the main culprit for our failures over the years at Richmond IMHO has been our recruiting.

we talk the talk ... but don't walk the walk ...
