Title: Tiger Airways a new sponsorship opportunity
Post by: mightytiges on May 03, 2007, 01:18:41 PM
A perfect opportunity for the RFC to gain another sponsor. They'll need someone  like Richmond to promote themselves up against Qantas/Jetstar. Just like McGuane, fly like a Tiger  :thumbsup.

CUT-price foreign airline Tiger Airways will base itself in Melbourne for Australian domestic flights, in a move prompting Jetstar to slash ticket prices.

Premier Steve Bracks today confirmed Tiger Airways would establish its Australian headquarters in Melbourne, with flights in and out of Melbourne Airport.

“Melbourne will host Tiger Airways’ new Australian head office, facilities for aircraft maintenance and crew training, and its start-up fleet,” Mr Bracks said today.

Tiger's flight schedule is expected to be known later this year.

Tiger Airways Chief Executive, Tony Davis, said the airline’s decision was a vote of confidence in Victoria.

“We had to determine the best location for an Australian base for our airline and Melbourne was a clear winner,” Mr Davis said.

i emailed the club a few weks ago when a "tiger airlines " article hit the news.

what a gr8 opportunity to have a major sponsor with the name tiger as its main focus.

if our club is serious they would be knocking down the tiger ailines door selling our club to them

Look im not sure what deals are in place but Steve Wright has shown he's a top operator, Id be surprised if we dont announce anything in the next 2 or 3 weeks especially if theres no other side deals which would preclude us from doing this one.

PS- What a great away strip for next season...instead of a sash...have an elongated tiger going from the bottom to the top with a couple of side panels in the form of flying wings lol. I wish I could draw it...maybe someone on here could do it.

One big stumbling block here folks....

QANTAS = protected sponsors of the AFL.

Doubt very much any Club could be sponsored by any other domestic carrier except QANTAS and perhaps by default Jetstar

But would be a good fit for the other Tigers I would have thought - the Coburg ones  ;D

But a super option for the other Tigers I would have thought - the Coburg tigers perhaps ;D

isnt telstra also an afl sponsor, but optus, primus, aapt etc also sponsor clubs

and quantas' major focus is international flights, tiger will be focusing on domestic

Fair point X- but I think the key word is protected sponsor.

Look if I was the RFC I'd look into it but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't happen.

maybe they (the airline) just might not like the positioning at the moment.

Bit premature me thinks.

Doesn't Macca's sponsor the AFL too, but the Eagles have Hungry Jacks as a sponsor? Or am I wrong lol.

Yes Steph I think they have an exemption, the same as Geelong does with Ford.

Ford and Hungry Jacks were long time pre-existing sponsors so that's probably why both clubs got an exemption.

But would be a good fit for the other Tigers I would have thought - the Coburg ones  ;D
It's a long flight to Frankston  ;D

A PLANNED sponsorship deal between new airline Tiger Airways and the Richmond Tigers could hit turbulence because of the AFL's link with Qantas.

Richmond is keen to sign up the Singapore-owned budget carrier, but rival Qantas said yesterday it had exclusive sponsorship rights as an AFL corporate partner.

Tiger, to be based in Melbourne, wants to launch domestic flights by the end of the year.

The airline has pledged to compete aggressively with Qantas's no-frills subsidiary Jetstar, with Qantas management warning that Tiger could hit the group's profitability.

Richmond president Gary March said preliminary sponsorship talks had been held with Tiger.

"We think we are a perfect fit for them," Mr March said.

"But at some stage we need to go through protocol in terms of Qantas' relationship with the AFL.

"We still think there is a position there for Tiger Airways to be involved with Richmond."

But Qantas group general manager marketing Neil Ross said its deal with the AFL stopped rival domestic carriers from sponsoring AFL clubs.

"It's not uncommon for industry exclusivity to exist in sporting sponsorships," Mr Ross said.

"We would expect that AFL clubs fully understand the nature of Qantas's support for the code."

But Richmond is likely to argue that a precedent has been set with Ford sponsoring Geelong while Toyota is the AFL's top corporate partner.

Last year, in another sponsorship dispute, Qantas chairman Margaret Jackson complained that the airline had been excluded from the Melbourne Cup carnival because of pressure from main sponsor Emirates.

The Victoria Racing Club said Qantas had been given ample notice that its minor sponsorship would not be renewed because of the carnival's new agreement with Emirates.

Tiger Airways announced yesterday it will operate from Melbourne airport's terminal four.

The terminal is separate from the main airport building and Tiger passengers will board aircraft from the apron, not aerobridges.

Tiger CEO Tony Davis said the no-frills terminal would allow efficient check-in and boarding and have retail and convenience facilities.

Good to see the Club has been proactive on this front.

No news in 5 months on Tiger airways becoming a potential sponsor probably means the AFL has disallowed it  :-\. At $9.95, one free flight could have been chucked into our 2008 membership instead of the towel  :D.

Im amazed that no deal has been announced yet, surely theres a whole scope of options for Tiger Airways to come on board. By the way I also favour "Tiger Coke" A yellow and black can of coke ... great marketing opportunity that could run over the summer with the Tiges getting a small percentage of per can sales. The whole Tiger thing could be a huge marketing opportunity for the Tiges.

Tiger Airways- flying tigers... hey maybe a coterie group called the flying tigers.
Tiger Coke
Tiger Gigi Gigi- Cheap discount to the best brothels in town  lol
etc etc.

I just don't get it. Wasn't Carlton United Breweries a protected sponsor of the AFL in the mid 90's yet the Saints and Dees had Tooheys as their major sponsor? Its called restriction of trade if you ask me.

Me either Ford still sponser Geelong.

And most of all Vodafone is going into massive agreement with a club and Telstra is one of the AFLs major sponsers.

Shouldnt be an issue.

Except its us.  ::)

The AFL will argue that since we don't have a pre-existing relationship with Tiger then it conflicts with their exclusive Qantas domestic sponsorship. Collingwood get away with Emirates because it's classed as international  ::).

Oh yes and West Coast had a pre existing relationship with Hungry Jacks well before McDonalds was one with the AFL.
What about the Saints and the Dees going to bed with Tooheys when CUB was the comps major sponsor.
Again Melbourne and the Roos and yes even the Pies did not have anything to do with Primus.
If we are using the AFL high moral ground Ford have been sponsoring the Cats since 1976 well before Toyota Holden or any other car manufacturer have decided to sponsor the VFL/AFL.
Its time we as a footy club present this case stand up have a bit of character and a bit of calibre and follow this through. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. If we don't start standing now we will continue to get the raw end of any deal and we will be continue to be the AFL'S and other clubs doormat in subsequent deals in subsequent years. The fish rots from the head.

Well North are allowed to have a sponsor (Vodafone) that conflicts with a AFL sponsor (Telstra)  ???.

The deal between Vodafone and Brayshaw has angered many at the AFL — not just because it has helped stymie plans to relocate the club to the Gold Coast, but also because it conflicts with the AFL’s own mobile phone broadcast rights deal with Telstra.
