New Dreamtime award
richmondfc.com.au
Thursday, May 10, 2007

THE Essendon Football Club, the Richmond Football Club and the AFL have announced that each year a retired indigenous player will be named the Dreamtime Player of the Year.

The award is an extension of the Essendon versus Richmond Dreamtime at the 'G activities, which this year will form the focus of the AFL's Indigenous Round in round nine.

This award is open to all clubs and the AFL community, and nominations for the award are being sought from clubs, state leagues and community groups.

AFL chief executive officer Andrew Demetriou said indigenous players had made an incredible on-field contribution to the game of Australian football and had made a similar impact in their work in the community.

"The award will recognise an indigenous player who has contributed significantly to AFL football, their club and community," Demetriou said.

Essendon managing director Peter Jackson said two key criteria to win the award were the playing record of the individual (they should have at least played at state league level) and the contribution the player had made to the community, either the indigenous or the broader Australian community.

Nominations for the award must be sent to the AFL by Wednesday, May 16, 2007.

The annual Dreamtime at the 'G match – to be played on Saturday, May 26, this year – will provide an ideal stage to celebrate the award recipient. This will include an official presentation of the award before the game, and the winner will then present the Yiooken award to the player judged best on ground.

"The (Dreamtime Player of the Year) name is a working title and members of the indigenous community have been asked to provide a name that encompasses the attributes of the award," Jackson said.

The winner will be selected by a panel of six made up of representatives from the AFL, Essendon, Richmond, past indigenous AFL players, an indigenous community and AFL Sportsready.

Richmond CEO Steven Wright said: "It is important to note that this award isn’t just about the two clubs participating in the Dreamtime at the 'G game, it’s about the celebration and recognition of all indigenous players and their work in the community. We certainly look forward to this being embraced by all clubs, state leagues and community groups and becoming a landmark award."

Another highlight of Dreamtime at the 'G will be a curtain-raiser between Essendon's affiliate club, the Tiwi Bombers, and the Rumbalara Football and Netball Club.

The Tiwi Bombers hail from the Tiwi Islands (home to Essendon and Richmond greats Michael Long and Maurice Rioli) and will play their first full season in the Northern Territory Football League this year. This will be the Tiwi Bombers' first game at the MCG.

If you're a member with a reserved seat you are okay but those with just the standard membership would have to reserve a seat for the game.

I'm still not sure why it's ticketed in the first place given how both sides have gone this year.

Sheedy expects desperate Tigers
May 23, 2007 - 7:09PM
The Age

Wily Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy is up to his old tricks again, this time talking up winless Richmond as a serious threat to his side in their AFL clash this weekend.

Sheedy said he was impressed with Richmond's gallant effort against the Adelaide Crows at AAMI Stadium last Friday night.

The Tigers drew level midway through the final term but ultimately fell nine points short to fall to 0-8 and bottom of the ladder.

But Sheedy described the Tigers' performance as "amazing" and was wary of underestimating Richmond in the third annual "Dreamtime at the G" match at the MCG on Saturday night.

"With a fantastic young side, they went over to Adelaide and nearly pulled the game off," Sheedy said.

"They probably played their best game last week.

"We've got to be really alert and play our best footy too to give us a chance of winning.

"Both clubs are absolutely super desperate - (Richmond) obviously to win their first game for the year and we are trying to get into the eight."

Moreover, the Tigers have recent history on their side, having won their past three matches against Essendon, who sit outside the eight with a 4-4 win-loss record.

On selection, Sheedy forecast one possible change to the team which thrashed the Brisbane Lions last week to end a three-game losing streak.

Mark Bolton, Kepler Bradley and Tom Hislop were being considered for selection, Sheedy said.

Sheedy said full-forward Matthew Lloyd was fine after copping a knee to the back last week.

I think the gates open around 4.30. Not sure when the pre-game stuff starts. I'd take a guess and say about 30mins before the start of the game at 7pm.

They are saying on PRE that Hird was BOG!  What the?   Excuse me?   You've got to be joking!!!!!  As I haven't seen the game, only heard it on the radio (the indigenous station at that), it's hard to say who should have got it but one thing for sure it wouldn't have been Hird.  I would have chosen Richo, just for the sake that he risked a lot to play tonight, literally put his body on the line.  Jackson played well too as did Lids, Tuck, Polak.  But Hird - give me a break :banghead :banghead

Just got home ... what can i say. theres nothing to say. everyone will blame the umpires but when your winning by 18 with 5 or 6 minutes to go you dont lose. Deledio showed us that he deserved to be taken 1. Outstanding tonight. Polak was good also although Lucas got away and Richo deserves better than to play for us- he really does.

Ignoring "that" decision and the emotion around it and the loss, deep down it was a pretty poor standard albeit exciting game by both sides. Stacks of errors especially dumb unenforced turnovers by us which you just can't make. From memory the errors were 14-7 at quarter time and 39-24 at 3/4 time. It's this which costs us games. Just gifting open possession to the opposition which costs goals.

Once again our first quarter proved costly in the end. We actually started the better but Lids and Tambo missed gettable set shots and then that shocker of a turnover through overuse of handball gave Essendon the momentum and a 3 goal start. Thankfully they were off target too and we were able to work ourselves back into the game and stay in touch at quarter time despite our errors.

The game continued in that pattern for most of the second until about 10 minutes to go when we stopped making so many errors and made Essendon pay for theirs and their misses to grab the lead. A good team against either side tonight would've have been 6-7 goals up at half-time.

It was good to see us burst out after half time and snag a few goals in a row in our best period of the game but we just couldn't get that killer gamebreaking goal for the rest of the match and Essendon would always score quickly once we jagged one from halfway through the 3rd. One more goal after we got our 12th would've have done it but in the end we went back into our shell slowing the game down with short too safe passes instead of winning it. Skill errors again proved costly and Essendon were winning the ball from every stoppage in the last 5-10 minutes.

Well I need to put my 2 bob in, I for one think we DID deserve to win the match, I saw a lot of good stuff out there last night, we had some stupid turn overs, they had some stupid turn overs. I truly believe the difference on the night were the umpires. We had some soft ones paid, but the ones that werent and the momentum we had going when they werent was very telling. Notably the 2 fifties that were paid for stopping the play on,the Richo goal, there was a head high tackle which turned into in the back in our forward line and Polak dragging a guy down and making him spill the ball, and play on being called. Its a joke!!! And what made me realise it was a huge farce is Hird getting the award, there were times I cringed when he got the ball because he is always damaging but even the great untouchable stuffed up heaps, Lucas , Deledio, Richo, there were many others more worthy.
One last word on our illustrious leader....Excuse me Mr Johnson, if you wouldnt mind stepping over here for the coin toss, we cant actually start the game until we do that!!!

Taking out "the decision" I thought we erred when we went defensive at around the 15 minute mark. When you have a team on the ropes you keep attacking and go for the jugular. With 5 minutes to go is when you go "tempo".

We have unfortunately forgotten how to win and that showed in those final 6-5 minutes.

Did "the decision" cost us the game - most probably.

We deserved a fairytale but more than anything Richo deserved the fairytale because his effort just to play was nothing short of inspirational :thumbsup

And when you go "tempo" the whole team sticks to it. Not most playing tempo and  maintaining possessions while a couple of others (hello Kayne) bomb it long to 50/50 contests which allowed Essendon to gain possession and run it up the other end down the fat side.
