Joel bowden is our best player
-
nahhhh don't think so "Aron" ... welcome to One-Eyed Richmond ...
-
Yeah Joel Bowden is a star and we all know lance franklin would have been the dream recruit
-
yeah ... instead we got that other guy ???
Richard Tambling i think is his name ... who the f*** is he ???
-
Id trade Joel Bowden, a back pocket cant be a sides best player.
-
Joel Bowden is a Hack "FULL STOP" ...
has he won any matches for us in his career ??? ... NO !
-
A bit hard to win games from Full Back ???. He and Paddy won us the game against the Crows last year though lol.
-
I can also remember Joel kicking 4 goals in a quarter and breaking the game wide open against the Eagles at the MCG on a Monday night in 1997. He also did his shoulder in that same game. So there we have it Bowden has won two games for us in 10 years. :lol :lol :lol
-
Super Star
-
is the most over-rated player on the list and history of the richmond football club ... and i can't believe he is
in the centary book ! ... what a joke ... why interview him for ???

LOL. Goose.
GO TIGES!!!
-
Well this thread is a winner. I feel somehow dumber having read it. :-\ :banghead
-
if Bowdo is our best player we are well and truly rooted as a club. Back pockets can never be a sides best player.
-
Is it April 1st already lol
:rollin

Andrew McLeod plays back pocket a fair bit.
-
no way he is our best player. but does he have tiger blood running through his skin. u betcha!!
tiger man through and through.
-
The man is a champion was All Austalin 2 years in a row and is the general, or quarter back a true champion must be consdered for the all star game
-
Joel Bowden has been Richmond's most consistent player over the past 5 years. There is no other backline player that obtains posession after posession and hits a target up the field. This is shown by his efficieny rate being in the top 3 over the past 3 years. He is the most unique full-back in AFL history and a true richmond champion.
-
Lets not forget Joel Bowden is a dual all-australian, dual B and F winner, won the AFL community award for helping under-privelged kids, and is the president of the AFL players association. Not only is he richmond's most important player he is an all around great guy.
-
who is this "Aron" bloke ??? ...
goddd he loves Joel ... Aron you have no idea mate !!!
love someone like Richo !
-
bowden thinks he's god.
wanker
-
He has had his moments as a backman, doing some good jobs on key forwards, but on the whole, he has been getting a lot of easy kicks in the backline rather than being in the thick of it and creating play where we really, desperately need players - the midfield.
A talented player, but really, he left the midfield because he was too soft to man up and play there.

welcome back johnf ;) :thumbsup
i personally think bowden should move up forward, mcmahon covers his defensive spot
-
I would make Joel our next captain.

Not sure if McMahon covers Joel's spot as Jordie might struggle just a touch on Jonathan Brown lol but yep push Joel forward, even to full-forward and give the opposition something to think about with Richo, Browny, Petts and possibly Polak also up there.
-
you dont get all australian 2 years in a row without being a very very good player, fair enough he didnt have the greatest year in 07, but he was still in the top 5 in efficiency in the afl and lets not 4get he couldnt be as creative as he would have liked, as kellaway got the sack which meant a lot of the time bowden had to take the main 4ward, the man is a dead set star
-
Joel Bowden is a brilliant footballer and his record speaks for itself champion, would be great to see him get 30 touches in the all star game

lol ... i am glad he is not an victorian !

The way to logically look at it is to look at the effect a player would have to the team as a whole if they were absent.
For mine, Bowden's absence would not have the same effect on the team as the exclusion of somone like Richo or even Simmo. Without Snake this year we have serverly struggled in the midfield and attempting to link up from HB to the F50.
Similiarly Richo (unfortunately IMHO) still remains the go to man in the forwardline. He is the spiritual leader of the team, leading by example and giving his all every single game.
Bowden has the accolades but he has played a very unaccountable game for years allowing him to rack up a huge amount of possessions. He hasn't the size, height or speed to play on the main backmen and always requires help if he is forced to do so. He is beautiful kick but if you were told that one of our stars had to prematurely retire immediately would his name spring to mind as the worst player to loose?
I would say, in terms of importance to our structure now and into the future, I would rank Rich and Simmo higher for the now and Lids, Foley, Thursty and even Cotchin for the future.
Just my opinion of course

yer i agree that we have other stars but i still think Mr Bowden is very underrated

Bowden was dropped in 04 b/c he was lazy uninspiring repetitive and gutless. The masses of fans converging on Frawley at the race at the Dome saw to that and guess what he took the bait and dropped him. Sure it was warranted and many have said that he is a changed footballer since his demotion 3 years ago.
Personally for me Joel going to the backline has not changed him as a footballer. Its taken him out of the midfield where you need to be tough and have a work ethic of strong fibre to succeed week in week out and cannot afford to be laxadazical. Furthermore in a defence like ours which tends to leak like a sieve anyway he can hide amongst the fact that we generally were getting beaten anyway and even if his man kicked 4 or 5 goals questions being raised anyway are with regards to our poor skills our turnovers and our endeavour at critical times when the game was up for grabs or lack of for most of the game anyway as Geelong at the dome last year. The one thing Joel does have is very good skills his field kicking is lovely 95-100% of the time and with that he tends to escape the scrutiny of the media with regards to our skills but he receives I would say as a direct run off handball or short kick the majority of his possessions and very few are hard ball gets.
His leadership also leaves alot to be desired. He tends to be the face or the voice of the players when we win or lose and fronts the media toeing the company line blah blah blah about what we want to hear and see and what not but in Richo's 250th last year his endeavour against Port was pathetic and that is being kind.He has shown similar traits of apathy at crucial times in other instances but due to his media friendly persona he tends to be ignored when criticism comes our way.
For me he is a fraud. At best he is a passenger in our side. I still have not forgiven him for the suicidal run across our defensive 40 in round 22 1998 when we needed to win to make the finals. Options upfield and a second quarter come back well and truly on, he selfishly runs across the face of goal gets tackled by Neitz who goals and turns the game back in Melbs favour. Or in 2001 first quarter against Adelaide at the G 4 goals to zip up Bowden on his own 30 metres out short kick to him rather than a one grab mark he decides to try and juggle the ball whilst running towards goal thinking he will kick from closer in. Guess what holding the ball and a game we were in full control of changes on that piece of garbage and we lead narrowly at quarter time. For me these two passages of play sum him up: lazy egotistical selfish maligned superficial vague weak hypocritical fraudulent.
For me Richo has more spirit courage endeavour passion glory stardom than Bowden ever will and even though selfish and maligned can be attributed to Richo also for me it adds to the enigma that is Richo. After all Richo has won us more games than Bowden has throughout their careers.
Richo forever the flawed genius
Bowden forever flawed.
I'm with Richo.

Joel has been a good consistent player for us but hasn't become the superstar supporters were expecting as a youngster when he was labelled the next Jimmy Hird. Hard not to disappoint supporters with that title over your head after your first year or two. Joel never was the same player once he broke his collarbone twice. Played more "safe" afterwards. Lame efforts like the ones HT74 described has made him another love/hate Tiger amongst supporters. I remember a game against the Pies in 2003 where he went lazily one-handed for a mark in front of the Richmond members. A few were close to jumping the fence lol.
-
No. 11 Joel Bowden ...
-
Bowden forever flawed.
Extremely tough post. Safe to say I totally disagree with virtually every word of it. >:(
Joel Bowden is a gun that every club in the competiton would take in a heartbeat.
He is the General of our defence and has more talent in his little finger than 90% of the players on out list.
There is no question about his leadership ability or his bravery IMO.
He has been asked to stand the likes of Jon Brown & Fevola despite being significantly undersized.
He not only matched them but beaten his opponent on several occassions and put his body regularly on the line for his team mates.
Expectations of him are huge and when he has the odd off game(rare in the past 3 seasons) 'supporters' like yourself are extremely quick to tear him to shreds and continually hark back to the dark days of Frawley.
It pees me off no end particularly when the guy has won dual Jack Dyer medals and AA recognition over the past few years. >:(
He is most definately up there in one of our best 3 or 4 players and deserves more respect than the crap you have served up in your post.
Joel for captain in '08. :thumbsup

Joel does win far more of these battles than he loses but IMO from a team perspective he shouldn't be playing in these roles. He's naturally more of a forward or wingman. He's more effective when he can zone off and collect the ball in space. He's only playing a key defenders role because of shocking list management thanks to Spud not recruiting any young tall defenders. Joel's got to hold the fort while Thursty, McGuane and now Rance develop.

No dispute MT. Actually I agree entirely.
It irked the heck out of me last season that the guy we recruited as a KPD(Polak) ended up playing Joel's role and Joel was yet again forced to forfeit his natural attacking game to mind the big guys.
Had me scratching my head constantly.
-
the only fraud in this team is our captain.
he is the most gutless captain we have had since we began as a football side.
bowden is a trier. plays his heart out but no where in the same league as richo does
-

I'm not a Sugar fan but to call him gutless is just plain wrong.
He played numerous games last season with a busted hand and on several occassions in '06 tagged the games best right out of the game.
Not good enough maybe.. but gutless?
Speaking of which I'd like to see you say it to his face Daniel. ;)
-
Johnson would not be my personal pick for a captain but at the stage when the choice needed to be made the pool was very shallow. B1 has not always been super supportive of the coaches, Richo had the reputation as erratic and Browny was injured - there wasn't much left. :help
Johnson lacks the 'star' quality that many of the best captains have traditionally possessed but he is a leader who gives his all. Until some of our more capable players develop into leaders like it or lump it - Johnson is our default leader.

i couldnt care less what any of u think but in my book he is gutless and at best a average player.
tagged the best out of the game. who cares, when he lost a few games due to his pathetic disposal of the ball and if we r really on the right track then dump him as captain. he is not a leader and will not win a game for us off his own boot like 15 other captains in the league would.
broken hand, finger i dont care if u cross the white line u should be able to play. look how archer played with his hand.

yet he has more premiership medallions than the rest of the side combined, go figure
-
yeah big deal that wasnt at punt road buddy.
last year in a year where we needed someone to stand up he went missing. all im saying is i want this bloke to win one game off his boot for us. just one game.
when i see that i will be happy. right now when i see this guy get his hands on the ball i cringe and hope he passes it off. unlike bowden, knockers he may have but his disposal is second to none in this team.
-
Joel bowden is our best player
...............and that would be one of the main reasons why we haven't progressed as a team.
Classifying a player as 'the best' needs to be someone who steps up and at least kick goals to win games, as per Nathan Brown prior to his horrific injury.
Kudos to Joel coming back several years ago after being demoted to Coburg and winning Jack's Medal.

what about the collingwood game this year where he set up numerous plays though the mid with his creative handballing does that equal one game where he one the game for us ???
-
no ... Kane Johnson is our best player ... he is captain ! ... :banghead
-
I am also very dissapointed with this post!!!!!!!!!!! I started this as a serious question if joel was our best player and to see so many supporters put down a great player is an absolute discrace
-
Aron it is nothing personal and the seriousness of your question is not a problem either. Merely that is my point if some agree well fine and if others don't that is also fine also. This is why we have forums and contribute to them daily to express our viewpoints. I would not call me thinking Joel is nowhere near our best player a disgrace just as you could find faults in Richo who is my favourite player. Yet I would not consider it an insult nor a disgrace if you thought otherwise. Anyway lets just agree we all have the success of the Tigers in the forefront of our minds and leave it at that. Welcome to OER.

Kane Johnson !

sorry ur right stupid me. 3 other players had more possessions and lids kicked 5 goals.
yet ur claim is Sugar won the game off his own boot.
no worries pal

it was my bad thinking of the wrong game. the vs bombers game was the one where he was superb, in the collingwood game sugar was brilliant in the 2nd half.
i'm not saying Kane is a superstar but it is absolutely ignorant to claim he is an average player at best

You've got to be kidding. ???
What you posted about Joel Bowden is one of the most disgraceful personal attacks I've seen on any player on any football forum.
You did a lot more than call him nowhere near our best player.
-
U gotta ask urselves,
Why do so many of us hate Joels Guts,or lack thereof.
He's a sneaky prick and thru his whole career has probably made
4 courageous, physical moves,2 of which happened last year
- in the same match.
Even the commentators were astonished and had a laugh at his overall
lack of desire to play the contested ball.
For a youngster that promised much he delivered little.
He is now, instead,a sweeper of the backline, encouraging others to do the hard work
enabling him to ping it off, hopefully to one of our players.
If there is any aura regarding this player,it's more likely to be self gratification....ask him,he'll tell u.
-
I'm one of Kane Johnson's biggest detractors but calling him gutless is farcical. The guy tries his guts out every game and is a very very good tagger. His main problem is his disposal
and decision making which is why he shouldn't be captain but gutless here certainly is not. In actual fact he is probably one of the more courageous players we have.
-
U gotta ask urselves,

So many?
I think you'll find you're a very small minority.
-
No AFL footballer is gutless. Just to run out on the field and compete takes courage when you have the likes of Jonathan Brown and Barry Hall crashing into you. Even a current Geelong player "flinched" out of going back into a contest.
For what it is worth IMO Browny (fully fit) is our best player but footy is a team sport and Richmond hasn't had a decent list for 25 years. It's always been left to too few to win us games.
-
there r varying degrees of courage MT,that's all.
He's a better salesman than Wallace.
