Leigh: Sherrin change wanted
29 May 2007 Herald-Sun
Andrew Hamilton with AAP
BRISBANE Lions coach Leigh Matthews has questioned whether it's time to tinker with the design of the famous Sherrin football.
The Sherrin has been used since the 1880s, but Matthews said it might be time to produce an easy-grip design similar to that used in the NFL specifically for night games.
It follows a similar call by retired rugby league great Andrew Johns about NRL balls.
Matthews said handling errors from slippery balls caused by dew in night games were ruining the spectacle.
"A heavy dew sneaks up on the players. If it is bucketing down rain all day, your senses are alert to it, but players don't adapt to dewy conditions as well," Matthews said.

My theory (which could be total crap lol) is the footys are pumped up too hard and there's no give. It might make them travel further but if you miss the sweet spot they go flying off the side of the boot.

Hey Leigh, cover the ball in fabric and wear velcro gloves. :thumbsup
No more fumbling (a bit tricky disposing of the ball though).

What a kook, in the pouring rain the ton heavy Sherrin is all part of the fun! :lol
