Title: Our backline is becoming settled
Post by: mightytiges on June 23, 2007, 07:34:27 AM
We've had pretty much the same back 6 since King has come in and Thursty has returned from his knee reco. They seem to be gelling quite nicely. All cheap pick-ups for us as well and apart from Joel all young and potentially 10 year players for the Club.

Bowden (F/S),  Thursty (Rookie), King (Rookie)
Raines (pick 73),  Polak (trade/pick 42), Newy (pick 52)

Given we've been competitive in all but 2 games, the decision to play youngsters ahead of Gas seems to have been justified.

Pretty much agreed MT, however would like to get at least one more big-bodied player down back.

Maybe Lachie Henderson who is big, athletic and aggressive. Not sure if he can play down back or not because I've only seen and read of him as a forward

Big test for young Thursty next week, will most likely play on St Nick

Thursty did the job on Nick in the only time they've played on each other. A challenge but not something out of his league.

Agree Bluey we need another key defender. Probably 2. Good sides have depth to counter injuries.

I was keen to see how Alex Rance goes in the championships for WA. Could be a good pick at 17 or 18. 194cm+ great speed, has the right size, weight and speed to be a key defender- could even be developed to play at full back on bigger full forwards.

apparently he has freakish pace, but I am a bit deterred from drafting key backman early.

Weaver reckons that most good kp defenders are drafted late or are converted from key forwards to key defenders

Hes not a key back, from what I understand he plays alot up forward and alot of a wing. Just seems to have the right numbers to possibly go to defence thats all. If not you get an Embley type of a wing- and thats not bad at all.

Sour grapes.  :D

Doesnt get outmarked too often.

Still very raw in his development too, he still has room for improvement.

That's scary!!!

Not deterred from taking Rance cos I read that he is more of a tall winger/fwd flanker.

Im a just concerned about talking tall defenders early. More seem to bomb out than make it

Lol, Freo have a buffet of sour grapes if you put it that way Bull  ;)

Reckon there would be a fair few players who left Freo and become successful. Players I can think of off the top of my head are

McPhee
Polak
Clement  :o
Sinclair
Croad (man they got done in this trade  :lol)

who else is there?

you can add Bell to that list.

Even though he went back he certainly kicked on for the Roo boys.

And going back to the early days they let Andrew McLeod go also.

What  ??? McLeod never played from Freo did he.

Would that have to do something with draft picks

We still another strong key defender for the gorillas but we're forming the nucleus of the very good backline. Not just stoppers either. All running rebounders. As fwoy said in another thread we set up plenty of goals from deep in defence with the Lids goal one of the best length of the ground team goals.

Special mention to Thursty. He was great tonight on Lloyd.

I thought Lukey McGuanes attack on the ball was sensational today.
Very good overhead has poise but his kicking is his only detriment.
His attack on the ball whether bouncing or overhead was great. Not afraid to run off.
Really really impressed and thrilled for the boy. He has come a long way from his 1st game in that mauling we copped against the Swans last year :thumbsup

Thursty was fantastic. VERY UNLUCKY with a few decisions not going his way. One that springs to mind was in the last quarter when Lloyd on the lead dropped the mark lace out under pressure and the ump in the same motion was ready to pay the mark but instead paid the free to him for over the soldier. Very very soft. Reason I bring this up I was right in line of it. Anyway great development and hopefully he has a great game against Riewoldt. Last time he was on Riewoldt he kept him quiet so here's to another great game and a prosperous future. :thumbsup
