Title: Richmond v St Kilda match thread
Post by: one-eyed on June 28, 2007, 04:51:37 AM
Who do you folks think we will play on Gehrig, Riewoldt and Milne?

And who do we match up in the middle with on Hayes, Ball, Dal Santo and Harvey?

Gehrig is a tough one, you maybe have to use Joel but have Polak dropping in front of him.

Thursfield gets Riewoldt, King gets Milne.

Jackson on Hayes, Tuck on Ball, Johnson on Dal Santo and Foley head to head with Harvey.

no guarantee the g train will play and if he does he wont have much impact with his hand and this yr has yet to do anything special

i think sugar will tag harvey

jacko tag dal santo

tuck will get hayes

and foley will go head to head with ball

just my opinion

i think thursfeild will stay at fb, if nick sookalot, plays ff, than thursty will get him, if nick plays up feild, then joel or polak will take him on

If King ever gets reported in his AFL career I won't mind if it's this week lol :shh.

Plough is jotting down wayne's match-ups as we speak  :thumbsup. Baker will most likely get Browny. We also have to watch out for Gram and Montagna's rebounding.

For sure Thursty has to go Riewoldt - Will go a long way towards making a game of it if he does.
StKilda may need a box of Kleenex on the bench for when St Nick gets dragged in the second half ....  :rollin

Good news for Julz and Mopsy (thanks for the email btw :)). Foxtel's Main Event is showing the game live.

Quote
The AFL has overcome one of the final glitches in its new broadcasting deal, reaching a deal with Foxtel's Main Event channel to fill the void in Brisbane that often has denied AFL fans any choice of games.

While Channel Ten and Fox Sports will telecast tomorrow night's Brisbane Lions-Port Adelaide clash at the Gabba, Main Event will show the St Kilda-Richmond game to appease fans wanting a choice or fans of those clubs living or on holiday up north.

In a deal agreed to by Channels Ten and Seven — which occasionally shows the same game as Foxtel on Sundays into Brisbane when Brisbane is playing — Foxtel's Main Event has agreed at no cost to show the alternative game in an agreement to last until the end of 2011.

The AFL's executive in charge of broadcasting, Gillon McLachlan, said the league had underestimated the demand in Brisbane for both AFL games, particularly on Saturday nights when, under the previous deal, Foxtel agreed to broadcast different games into different markets using free-to-air telecasts.

Oh good I was wondering if I have to pay for the privilege of watching it on Main Event or as I am a Foxtel subscriber already, will get it for free.  That's people power for you.  A whole lot of people (myself included) bombarded the AFL and Foxtel complaining about the raw deal we get regarding tv coverage.  Not everyone is Queensland is a Lions supporter.

Royal says Browny will have more minutes tomorrow

Quote
"He'll play a little bit longer tomorrow night and hopefully he can have the same success as he did last week," Royal said as the Tigers trained at Punt Road on Friday.

"Certainly he's going to get a bit of attention from the opposition, we know that, but I am sure he will handle himself fine."

Steven Baker or the improving Jayden Attard are among the contenders for the job on Brown.

Simmo, Edwards, White and Hyde on the bench. Patto starting in the ruck.

Quarter time. 5.1 a piece

Foley's first 15 minutes was AAA.
Petts on song up forward. Having Browny take the second defender is helping him big time the past 2 weeks.
Tuck shutting out Hayes so far.

Can't knock the effort so far. Good stuff. We need someone to help Foley win a clearance. Getting beaten at the stoppages around the ground 12-6.

We're playing a shoot-out with them letting Gram free vs Bowden rebounding. Tivs now onto Gram.

Saints down a man on the bench.

4 points up at half-time. Goal vs goal.

Our problem is the clearances. 10-18  :help. Foley didn't get much of it that quarter and our wins from stoppages dried up.

I think the Saints put a hard tag on Foley RR. Tivs shutdown Gram as well. Man on man.

Thursty is giving away 23 kgs to Gehrig  :o and Rainesy is still on Riewoldt. We're getting away with it so far. Riewoldt getting it more outside 50.

Howat was pretty good that quarter. Got it in space so he could always use his strong left foot.

Richo, Petts and Browny teaming well up forward. Sugar, Joel and Newy getting plenty of it.

Lids and Tambo haven't been in the game. Might have to push one forward. Lids would outgun Attard inside 50.

Great mark by Edwards on the tellie  :clapping. Goal and mark of the week this round.

Told ya we should have gone for Rix.  Did you see our beloved Captain stuff it up (for something different) and result in the opposition scoring?  How often did Gehrig go off his brain at his team-mates?  And people comment about Richo?  Foley was superb in the first half till Ball worked him out.  Did Petts get reported - they didn't show it on our coverage.  Gotta hand it to Harvey - the man is an ironman!

St Kilda to me is the club we should try to emulate.
They should have been run off their legs in the last quarter, but they just work real hard.
Good game by us I thought, with a few players down.
Don't think the Tiges would have lost too many fans tonight and still show there's good times ahead I reckon.
Probably everyone here hates him, but I would have loved to have had a Robert Harvey play for us.  He's an absolute champion!

I'm not. Can't have a go at the effort from most of the boys. Lids and Tambo probably only the most disappointing Tigers out there. I was surprised seeing Lids had ended up with 18 possies.

The game showed again what we're missing. A bigger body defender to handle the gorillas and another classy inside ballwinner or two to help out Foley. Simmo wasn't match fit even though Patto wasn't too bad. We lost the hitouts again.

Plough also experimented with match-ups  :whistle. Raines on Riewoldt instead of using Thursty. Thursty on Gehrig instead of using Joel.

Some serious match up issues tonight, but in the run home to end the season i expect to see it more often. Melbourne play Carlton next week and things will become clearer.

Serious, now thats an undrestatement. , laughable I reckon

Robert Harvey is a great example of how any AFL player should aspire to be.  The guy plays as if he was 10 years younger than he really is.  A big ask for Howat to play on him.  Montagna left Jackson for dead.  Good to see Jake King up against that horrible little weasel Milne.  I would have had Polak on the ugly G-train and Thursty on Riewoldt.  Simmo looked underdone and whilst Patto tried, Rix was better.  Wish they would all stop kicking backwards - blind Freddy could see the turnover happening.  Petts was confident, Foley was brilliant.  Lids was quiet up till the last quarter when he got his act together.  Tambling was quiet all night.

Poor Richo  :wallywink

Errors: Richo 6, Raines 4, Lids 3, Sugar 2, King 2.

Tuck, Petts, Polak, Thursty, White didn't record a clanger according to the Age

How Wallace let Montagna run free all night is beyond me.
Was Jacko on him at some stage?

Montagna had 15 disposals in the last quarter  :help

thats a great effort 15 possies in the last 1/4
l thought Jackson has been doing a great job in previous weeks but Montagna has really stepped it up this year
l had about have them possies in beers in the last 1/4  :cheers

Most obvious free kick of the year - to Reiwoldt in the goal square for holding when both players were watching the ball sail harmlessly over their heads.  :banghead

New rule needed, ironically one that KB should relate to - the Gheric rule - you are not allowed to play on when you are already off your line, or push an opponent in the chest when you are off your line. If the opponent did this it would be 50 metres. He's good at it   :clapping

Raines on Reiwoldt was worth a try, they played him deeper as a counter but he didn't really hurt us until the last quarter goal when he got him one out.

Hey Tigermonk

I don't believe that the Reiwoldt/Raines match-up cost us the game, buy maybe I should read more and follow what everybody else says  :thumbsup

Riewoldt is a champion and we didn't have an obvious cover for him - it's all very well for people to suggest Thirsty - who gave away 5 goals to Gherig. I thought Wallace explained it quite rationally - maybe you should be coach.

We had 600 games less experience last night. The lack of that 100-150 gamers realy stands out as does those under 50 games.

Simmo looked underdone and whilst Patto tried, Rix was better.

Got to disagree Julz - Rix unfortunately gives the Saints very little around the ground. Patto (the battler :thumbsup) always tries to make a contest. Rix doesn't really hurt the opposition, yes he gets the tap but that's about it

When the floods on what do you expect them to do? Just kick to a 1 on 3 or 2 on 4 and hope for the best. They wait for an option, try to create - as a spectical its awful but they way teams flood these days there are few options I reckon

Terry Wallace= NO IDEA ::)

I thought you'd packed up your boots and ball and gawn Jack ::) ;D never to be seen again  :rollin

Seriously...`

Considering last year they thrashed us by 100+ points I thought we did OK. Apart from a 6 minute patch in the final quarter we were right in the game.

It was actually a great game of footy apart from when the Saints played the flood. They are so Sydney like it's funy and sad. When we got a run on they went the flood

The only 2 match ups I really had an issue with was Raines on Reiwoldt - strange. And Howat -v- Harvey - thought Howat struggled to read the way Harvey plays.

Thought the Montagna -v- Jackson made sense as Jackson is so quick - unfortunately what it again showed was his lack on footy smarts in the clinches. After all the media coverage Jackson got this week it was a good test for him.

Johnson -v- Del Santo was a win for us. Can tell you all the Captain had a job to do and he did it.

I worry that people cannot see that there is light at the end of the tunnel maybe people just don't want to see it - I don't know

But I reckon our kids are improving all the time. Look at Edwards - class act that kid. Apart from the last quarter Thursfield beat Gehrig. Patto is busting his guts and has probably learnt more about footy this year than he has in his entire life. What can you say about Foley? There were people here 12 months ago who questioned if he would make it - guess what he will if he hasn't already. Go and watch the other kids running around at Coburg. Today Jack Reiwoldt won me - he is a talent. Have a look at Peterson - coming back from a really nasty dose of OP but geesh he just looks classy.

Things aren't that bleak ....  :thumbsup

Yes I see what you mean.  Six to one, half a dozen to another I guess.  Turnover now or later.  But honestly I would prefer the ball closer to our goal than the oppositions.
