Title: Plough's aftermatch press conference
Post by: one-eyed on June 30, 2007, 10:37:44 PM
* Genuine credit to St Kilda.

* Pretty good football match. Hard running, free flowing and competitive. They're more mature and it showed in the end. Showed in tackling and us coughing it up. Physically we weren't able to get the ball out of stoppages compared to them. Game decided on them getting the ball out of the centre more than us.

* Raines on Riewoldt - Andrew did well. Of Riewoldt's 4 goals one was goal of the century and another from a dubious decision. So Raines did all Terry asked. Not a unusual move. We like Hawthorn use Campbell Brown tried Raines on Tarrant and now Riewoldt tonight. By the numbers Riewoldt did his job for his team but Terry not disappointed. Didn't look to change the match-up ever during the game.

* Terry said he hadn't seen someone work as hard as Foley. Nathan reaping the rewards for his work ethic.

The Tigers escaped unscathed and coach Terry Wallace appeared happy with the resolve and improvement shown by his young side.

"I saw it as a pretty good football match, hard running and competitive but when it came down to the crux of it they were a bit more mature than we are at this stage," he said.

Forward Kane Pettifer is the only doubt for next week after he was reported for striking Leigh Fisher in the opening term. Wallace said he had not seen the incident.

Richmond may be out of finals contention, but the Tigers will shape the eight if they play as they did last night.

Coach Terry Wallace said he was delighted with the progress his team had made.

"This side we played today has given us some beltings over my time at the footy club with a lot more senior experienced teams for us out on the ground," he said.

"We are a lot younger now. From where I am sitting, I think we are heading in the right direction from where we were perhaps 18 months ago.

"I know the ladder position doesn't say it, but against the better sides – and I rate St Kilda as a very good side – we are playing better footy. I have no doubt about that."

Richmond on track: Wallace
11:58 PM Sat 30 June, 2007
By Ben Casanelia
for richmondfc.com.au

DESPITE posting just one win from 13 matches this season Richmond coach Terry Wallace believes the club is "miles" ahead of where it was 18 months ago.

After watching the young Tigers fall away after a spirited three-quarters against a resurgent St Kilda, Wallace said he liked what he was seeing.

Ten of the 22 that tackled the Saints had played less than 50 games.

"We're still very, very young and that catches up with you at the end of the day," he said.

"I like what I'm seeing. The side that we played tonight has given us some beltings, absolute beltings in my time at the footy club with a lot more senior experienced teams for us out on the ground.

"We are a lot younger now and being able to compete better against the opposition.

"From where I'm sitting I think we are miles in front of where we were perhaps 18 months ago.

"I know the ladder position doesn't say it but against the better sides, and I rate St Kilda as a very good side, we are playing better footy. I have no doubt about that."

The Tigers trailed by four points heading into the final quarter but stumbled at the final hurdle as the Saints powered away with six goals in 17 minutes to start the final term.

Wallace said maturity above all else lost his side the game.

"It was hard running, free flowing and very competitive and I think probably when it came down to the crux of it they are probably a little bit more mature than what we are at this stage," he said.

"That showed out in the end."

While offering a lack of maturity as a legitimate reason for the loss, the third-year Tiger coach said the playing group was still hurting.

"It's bitterly disappointing to lose any game, but particularly when you are in it up to your ears," Wallace said.

"At three-quarter time we genuinely thought we had a real opportunity to cap off a good a win but to their credit they are a pretty good side and I think they've got a fair bit to play in the competition in the run home."

In a bold move Wallace gave the job of minding Saint star Nick Riewoldt to the much smaller Andrew Raines. The 184cm Raines conceded 12cm and 15kg to Riewoldt and despite having four kicked on him, drew praise from the coach.

"I thought he did a pretty fair job," he said.

"Riewoldt's kicked the soccer goal of the century as one of his four (goals) and I would have thought got a dubious decision to kick the second one of his four.

"So, when they've got it in (inside 50) nearly 60 times I though Rainesy performed pretty well.

"Never once in the game I was I looking for a (Joel) Bowden or a (Graham) Polak to go on to him."

He also had nothing but praise for emerging midfield star Nathan Foley. The 21-year-old Tiger, who, along with recruit Graham Polak, has been the stand player of season 2007 for the Tigers, gathered 21 possessions and was among the best again for his team.

On two occasions Foley burst out of the centre and kicked running goals from 50 metres that had more than a touch of Chris Judd about them.

"He's been very impressive hasn't he?," Wallace said.

"A couple of those clearance goals were outstanding. I haven't seen anyone who's worked as hard as him for a long, long time.

"I've had players who I've coached in the past who have got some rewards for their work and Nathan is starting to reap the rewards for doing that type of work."

Foley, along with young ruckman Adam Pattison, Daniel Jackson, Jake King, Will Thursfield, Shane Edwards and Cameron Howat represent the future for the Richmond Football Club.

It's a future Wallace sees as very bright.

Ive been away for a bit but managed to get to the game sat. night.

For the life of me i still dont understand the riewoldt/raines chapter of yet another frustrating installment of the continuing misadventures of Suntan Wallet and the Game that got away.Wrong matchup form the start and i spilt my mid strength beverage in an angry moment when it continued after half time.idiot Johnson needs to relinquish the captaincy and focus on kicking accurately to a target 40 metres in the clear. We lack a true leader to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and set the example.....maybe pink might be the man if that lower leg stress is managed well enough fingers crossed

On the positive...pattison is showing some balls and  has handed me back some of the faecal matter i threw in his general vicinity early this year....and thanks to foley for cranking it up a few notches and giving me somethong to nearly fall off the edge of level 3 too...

we are jack, last yr, sydney, bulldogs and saints beat us by 100+, the eagles nearly by that margin, and this yr v all these siges we have given them a real shake and played damn good footy

your bs is starting to wear thin, we played famn effin good and if you cant see the improvement in our game it proves the tigers did the right thing by letting you go

ff, our disposal efficiency in teh 1st half was 92.5 % , the highest of any team this yr !

i would rather lose and see us play as we did than win like the bombers have

we have much more upside than the bombers and many teams in the afl

ur not just a pessimest, u r a sour sook, who cant accept reality

u talk the talk but never back it up. u say u were at the game, if u were u saw one of the best games of the yr, so stop your bloody vendetta and just accept it, we are playing a great style of footy esp, for such an inexperienced team

dont be surprised if next yr we jump up the ladder ala hawks this yr, all these games we nearly won this yr, next yr we will win

in the mean time, get a yr supply of kleenex or stop sooking

this yr is all about developing the kids, and we are succeeding there, join the ride or f off

no offence!

raines did a great job, not sure why everyone is on terrys back about it

look at it this way, st nick has kicked like a dog all yr and sat night he kicks str8, 4 straight

1 from a bs free kick, another out of his poop shute mid air, another on a really acute angle . he only really kicked one goal on a rebound where he used his size tobeat rainsey and run into goal.

in fairness, saint nick was lucky to have 4 , rainsey can walk tall, cos if nick was meant to be a superstar, with 60 inside 50s, he should have had 10 goals due to the size difference

There is an improvement xxx...we are defnitely  more competitive now and thats what we want....i reckon we just need some more spinal strength which is weak due to our past errors in the draft...

jack riewoldt is playing really well at coburg as a chb, who knows he may become the next justin leppitsch, dominant defender and a killer in attack when switched

we need another ruck, that obvious, and hopefully cleve can work hard enough to control chf and who knows we may get fev next yr and kruezer

I was dumbfounded at the decision to play Raines on him, but looking at it like that, you're right, X, he should have had 10!

Well done Rainesy and Wallace for trying something different  :thumbsup

Not so much how many goals he kicked..more the fact that he picked up 20 odd possessions and set up a few plays that boosted the saints morale...i would have preferred throwing thursty on him ...we need all the drive we can get from defence and thats where we missed rainesy...

hey xxx im a big jack fan and thats a good point you make.

kruezer would be a positve step for sure ..just not sure about the fev though....unlike richo who gets frustrated but will present again time after time...once fev loses it thats it for the day with him..

barru hall was the same at the saints, change of club change of scenery and look what he achieved

fev isnt that bad, just like richo, he has teh camera on him and is scrutinised 24/7.

fev has been playing with a sore knee all yr, needed a rest to recover but pagan needs 8 wins to save his job thus imho has forced fev to play injured and its just all caught up to him

i have seen fev put in many 2nd and third efforts, but when ur injured , its just damn difficult to keep going.  also, would not surprise me is fev is doing this on purpose to get out of there ,(just liek paddy did at the doggies)
fev would be an assett to us esp with richo in the tail end of his career

I wouldn't mind fev too much if he came relatively cheaply.

Don't think PSD is an option  ???

But I wouldn't mind doing a swap of picks like the Polak trade

Swap our number 1 pick with their likely 3rd pick
Swap our 2nd rounder with their 2nd rounder
Chuck in a player like Hartigan or Paddy as steak knives

Effectively we still have 3 top 20 picks (about as far as the good talent goes) + another key forward which will place pressure on Sarge, hopefully give him a kick up the arse to start applying his talent

our disposal efficiency in teh 1st half was 92.5 % , the highest of any team this yr !
They said on 3aw that our effective kicking was No. 1 in the league over the past month  :o.

It's in the ruck and at the stoppages that we're getting beaten. We're missing a fit Simmo and Cogs big time to help out our only true ballwinner Foley. Our lack of midfield depth is still a major issue.

1) that stat i didn't know ... but that was for only 1 match out of 13 ... yet it is good ... i agree ...

2) AGREE 200% with the essendon quote ... they are kidding themselves and they will finish "9th" ... but yet i don't like losing "xXx" ... but i can see light for us ...

3) the past two weeks we have played good football ... Agree ... i reckon the match against st kilda was better style then melbourne ... free-flowing ... i agree ... we actually looked good ... i mean Foley's goal in the first quarter i had to watch it again !!!

4) not sure about next year mate ... i would say this is typical richmond ... playing good when it doesn't matter ... with the finals ... but i can see us winning more matches next year with a full team in for sure ...
hope you are right that we might be where hawthorn are ... because if we are where we are next year ... terry shouldn't be here anymore !!!

5) yes ... this year has been about the kids ... and we should expect to be where we are with a young team in ... and only 1 good smashing compared to 3/4 last year ... improvement ... but still 9 to go ...
maybe those matches that we got close add Brown to them and we could be 6/7 or 5/8 instead of 1 win ???

yet, that last quarter was disappointing ... i mean ... you would think terry would say "boys we are neck and neck now ... you want to win the 50/50 ones ... give your all and win this MOFO !!! fire up boys" ... because to me it seemed like we just were tired and slow ... no hunger really it seemed ... only Foley's goal ... seemed like a bit of fire !!! ... maybe we just got tired ...

and does anyone else think Richardson doesn't get emotional after he kicks a goal ???

like i may be stupid ... but he doesn't get more fired up ... just the run to a player and high five ...

i remember he kicked a goal and stayed behind the line catching his breath ... that was the 1st quarter ... like don't go towards kayne and get fired up ...

but no questioning his passion to have the football ...

i just reckon when he gets "fired up" he plays and trys harder and is a "BULL" gone crazy !!! ... yet he probably is thinking ... i have been here before !!! ... not going to play finals ... so just get the football and hopefully we win !!! ROFLLLLLLLLLLLL

Fev is a flawed genius imo, still capble of achieving gratnes
but he MUST produce consistency in 08 if he is to take advantage of the
opportunitiy that lies ahead of him.

Basically he needs to grow up .
Another thing,I'd bet the old man is a big problem.

Worth the gamble.
