Title: Ask the Coburg Tigers Coach
Post by: radio1611 on July 05, 2007, 05:50:22 PM
G'day everyone from Radio 1611 AM.

Similar to last week at the VFL Williamstown V Geelong game, we are going to have another segment of "Ask the coach".

That means during pre-game we are going to put YOUR QUESTIONS to the Coburg Tigers Coach - Andy Collins.

All you have to do is post your question below by 8 PM Friday July 6th and we'll put the questions to Andy before the Northern Bullants v Coburg Tigers match.

Andy has told us he will be busy with a team meeting until 12.25pm, so we expect to be chatting to him live to air at around 12.30pm.

To listen in, just tune in from 12 Noon on 1611 AM, or listen online at http://www.radio1611.com.au and click "listen live".

The Bounce-Down for the game will be at 1.10pm as this is also an ABC TV game.

So please... post your questions to the coach.  :thumbsup

Welcome to OER Peter  :). It's great for us Tiger supporters that 3XX broadcasts the Coburg games so we can keep in touch with how our cubs are coming along at VFL level each week  :cheers.

Question for Andy Collins:
In the long-term what position does he believe Jack Riewoldt will mainly settle into - CHB or CHF?

Q1. Danny Meyer.  Does he have a future?  From memory he's played some decent footy off half-back yet the bulk of the time we seem to persist with him as a forward.  I don't get to see Coburg games - but if Andy could give us a run-down on where they're playing him at and how he sees him developing in the long term it would be good.

Q2. Is it better for draftees to develop at Coburg (e.g. Polo, Foley), or is it of greater benefit to throw them in the deep end (e.g. Tambling, Deledio)?  To some of us it appears that young players who've been given time to learn at Coburg seem to have a steeper development curve than those who are handed a senior jersey on a plate.

Thanks for the opportunity, Peter.

Q. Hi Andy,
Al Neville - many people were surprised he wasn't on an AFL list this year. He seems a good chance to end up on one next year. Gun VFL player.
Any thoughts on why he has been overlooked until now and what he has improved on this year that would  make him more likely to be drafted now?

Is it hard to juggle coaching Coburg to win and coaching young Richmond listed players to develop in a specific area? (I think you're doing a fantastic job of both). More to the point, are there occasions where a Richmond listed player's development for Richmond might not be what gives Coburg the best chance to win a particular game?

In regards to yoyo players, players who play a few games for Richmond and then find themselves in the side for Coburg like Meyer, Schulz, Cleve Hughes have been a few times this season. Would the position they play for Coburg when they return be dependant on the match ups you want Andy, or would Terry have input with you and determine that he would like certain players to play in certain positions?
For example Schulz is sadly out of form and is continually playing in the forward line for little reward. If Terry wants to him to start there fine I guess you have an obligation to an extent  but if you see that the lad is struggling perhaps you could intercede and have him go for a  run at CHB instead to have the ball come to him as it  may be more conjucive and productive for him and for Richmond in the longer term.

Q1) Meyer. Does he have a beef with Terry? Can see he isn't working hard but can't tell why. Is it just him or is there something about Terry?

Q2) Ryan Anderson. Do you reckon he has AFL potential

Q3) Will you please coach our AFL side, you appear to be a better coach  ;)  :lol

PS, only ask the first 2 questions  :)

Q. Andy, has there been any thought to give Danny Meyer some time as a inside midfielder at centre bounces and at the stoppages?
Richmond did a fair bit of stoppage work this week at training and Danny showed he was able to get his hands on the footy frequently, which is something he has struggled to do at half-forward for Coburg, and then use his strength as a skilled user of the footy.

Q. Is Carl Peterson close to getting a game with Coburg seniors?

Q. Andy, what are your expectations for the team for the rest of the season and now that Coburg is 4th have those expectations risen since the start of the year?

What do u think of Gaspars' decision to step down from the game,
rather than play football for the Coburg Tigers ?

Did the boys think it was sihthouse, considering his form had warranted a stint ?

Do the boys watch the senior matches from the perspective of,"where" they will fit in,
or are they happy to play their individual strengths and see where it lands them?

Do you listen to Pantera?

Have you ever seen a Gladiator movie......?

Hi Andy,
can you please comment on the following things:
1. The improvement of Jarrod Sylvester.
2. The connection between Coburg and the Calder Cannons
3. Coburg's chances in the VFL finals (seniors and reserves)

Q. And just on Sylvester, would he in your opinion Andy be able to make the jump to AFL level as a full back?

I back that one up.  Good one ox.  :thumbsup

When do you see Peterson getting a game for Coburg Seniors?  He's been good by all reports in the past few weeks and got 21 possessions and the game winning goal last week.

Agree, an excellent question.
Gas wants to help the club and agreed to come back in some form or another, but surely playing alongside the kids in the seconds would have given them enormous support.

Andy on air  :thumbsup

- cass, connors, peterson, jack, andy collins (OP) will play AFL next year. Called collins a fantastic talent  :thumbsup

- Peterson will play seniors soon. Not in there ATM due to lack of preseason

- players played in positions that terry and andy discuss

- gus not playing for richmond on sunday, playing today (big strapping kid with good skills)  :thumbsup

- Sylvester can play AFL footy (GB question)

- gaspar stepping down, respects his decision and can play a role off-field

- Likes his movies (another GB question), music stuck in the 80's  :lol

- ando has AFL potential (my question). unbelievable pace, skill and breaks the line

- has interest in melbourne job, doesn't think he will get it

- has high expectations of ressies and seniors

- neville has a strong chance to go AFL  :thumbsup suprised if he doesn't get picked up. could and should have been at least rookied last year

- thinks there is merit in kids developing in VFL but there is VFL bias there

- ressies won 226 to 22 IIRC

- MT question, not sure where Jack will play, versatile player in development years should continue to be a versatile player

- sylvester (mal michael mould, great closing speed and already 100kg), neville good chances to be drafted at years end

Paraphrasing what Andy said:

Compere - From Crackertiger from PRE – who on Coburg’s Richmond’s list will play AFL next year.

AC - Trav Casserley hasn’t played yet and did a hammy that’s kept him out, but his form has been very good.  Connors with another preseason will step up.  Peterson is another one is looking really exciting for them and Jack’s already played one game.  So probably those four kids.  Andy Collins is another one and ppl are going to like seeing him.  He hasn’t played a lot of footy because of OP but he’s a very exciting talent as well.

Compere - Crackertiger asks when will Petersen play in the seniors?

AC - He didn’t do any preseason and we’re just getting some game time and he’s going to be a real X factor for us in the last few games.

Compere - The General from PRE asks what role does Coburg play in the development of youngsters, for example, do they get played in positions the RFC would prefer, or does he as coach have the end say in the pursuit of victories?

AC - No, no.  He understands his job and being an old team mate of Terry’s and got a strong alliance and a real loyalty to Terry.  So it’s something we discuss.  Craig McCrae, the development coach at RFC, communicates the ideas of RFC and he’s an assistant coach to Andy.  So we try and get that compromise.

Compere - Angus Graham, where is he playing this weekend?

AC - Angus playing today.  A real compliment to Angus in the way he’s been developing this year.  He’s developed into a young, big, strapping man and obviously the middle centre cricket wickets aren’t  doing him great compliments at the moment, but he’s a highly skilled, highly athletic big guy.

Compere - From Gordon Bennett from OER asks about the improvement of Jarrod Silvester.

AC - If he was listed, he’d be playing AFL football.  He’s been amazing holding down fullback.  If you look at Egan of Geelong, he’s a similar type of player that will be able to step up next year.  Only a matter of when a player like that gets drafted.

Compere - From Brackets lol from OER he asks what do you think of Gasper’s decision to step down from the game rather than to play football for the Coburg Tigers in some sort of mentoring role.

AC -He can understand and respect Darren’s position.  Re Silvester and McGuane as developing backmen, Darren can play a role there off field.  Once decision was made that he wasn't going to be getting a game in the seniors, Darren’s role as a coach around the club is probably greater value.

Compere - From Brackets again - music and movie tastes.  Do you listen to Pantera and have you seen a Gladiator movie?

AC - Loves movies.  Movie nights – kids orientated – by the time the kids go to bed it’s too late to watch any decent movies.  Music – stuck in the ‘80s and ‘90s.  Likes a bit of everything.

Compere - Bluey21 from OER – Ryan Anderson – AFL potential?

AC - Yes, he does.  One of the true white? Men that can run, and he’s got unbelievable pace, nice skills, breaks the lines.  Very exciting talent and he’ll be a player to watch in the next couple of years.

Compere - Blue21 - will you coach an AFL side – interested in Melbourne job?

AC - Along with 1000 others.  If they come knocking on his door will take it, but there’s some great candidates, but there’s only 16 positions and there’s probably about 200 ppl that would luv that opportunity.

Compere - Moi (he pronounced my name right lol) – what are your expectations for the team for the rest of the season now that Coburg is fourth.  Have those expectations risen since the start of the year?

AC - Our expectations was to win more games than last year.  Our reserves have already won 9 games and our seniors 7.  Last year we only won 15 games, so we’ve achieved that and aiming higher and want to finish top 4 in both teams.

Compere - How do you manage your time between Coburg and Cricket Victoria?

AC - Got the best of both worlds and thinks that any person would be envious of the position that he’s in.  Got a great job as the player development manager where he’s extended that role in overseeing coach development as well, and then puts footy boots on with Coburg and enjoys that role.

Compere - From Fishfinger - Neville – many ppl were surprised he wasn’t on an AFL list this year.  He seems a good chance to end up on one next year.  Gun VFL player?

AC - Definitely and only 21 turning 22, so even in the old system could have been rookied and would be surprised if he doesn’t get picked up based on his form this year and his performance in the state game as well.

Compere - Is it benefit for draftees to develop at Coburg or Richmond

AC - Has no doubt that they’re better off playing at Coburg.  Biased opinion of the benefits of the VFL.  He says AFL clubs forget the old days where AFL clubs were trying to get top-up players on a regular basis and that is no good for their player development.

AC - Happy with reserves win.  Lost twice to this team this year and result fantastic.

Compere - From MT – in the long term, what position will Jack settle into – CHB or CHF.

AC - Hasn’t decided and at 19 years of age, too soon to pigeonhole and should continue to be versatile in his development years.

Compere - What player on Coburg list that isn’t aligned with the RFC do you think would have a good chance to be drafted?

AC -Silvester, RFC have clearly indicated a key position back.  22 years of age, 6’3, great closing speed, already 100 kgs.  Similar to Mal Michael but could be better than that.  Neville in midfield.  Two boys who are constantly spoken about and promoted to Terry.

His answers show he knows footy ... and yes players like Anderson should be AFL listed players- and they should be at Richmond. You cant tell me that Anderson and Neville arent better than say the 35 or 36th listed player at Punt Rd. If we sack plenty at the end of the season, draft 2 or 3 coburg boys as the last players on the list ... maybe we'll find a player or two.

IMO Nevellie should get drafted with a 3rd or 4th rounder

Both sylvester and Ando should get rookied

Good to hear. Only question on both Silvester and Neville is do they have the necessary pace for AFL level. Both obviously fit our needs - a solidly built key defender to handle the gorilla FFs and a ballwinning onballer.

Nice dig at the Blues and Pies who want to go it alone with their own VFL teams ;). Our relationship with Coburg is arguably one of the best affiliates.

Cheers Bluey. He did say "22 years of age, 6’3, great closing speed, already 100 kgs.  Similar to Mal Michael but could be better than that." but this is at VFL level on VFL forwards. It would be great if as Andy believes this would also be true at AFL level  :pray.
