it isn't that you are ranking them, it is that your posting has a definite hint of trolling
maybe if you didn't start that tambling vs franklin thread we wouldn't be having this argument
-
Okay I'll bite.
1. Lids - for obvious reasons. Still needs to learn to beat a heavy but has shown at just 20 what a class act he is either forward or across HB and through the lines. Showing why he went No 1 pick.
...gap.....
2. Tambo - I'd still have at 2nd of the six picks. First year was hampered by hammy problems as his body learnt to cope with the rigours of AFL coming from Division 2 footy. Has played 52 games and has improved each year both IMO and statistically.
3. Patto - Fast tracked this year due to injuries to our ruckmen. Struggled in the early rounds with the extra workload and responsibility but has been servicable for his age and experience. Still has a along way to go but coming along nicely IMO. He's improved significantly from his 1st to 2nd to 3rd years.
4. Polo - After starting in the Coburg ressies when he first arrived worked he was up to be one of the finds of 2006. IMO he wasn't palying at that level in early games this year (maybe copping more attention from the opposition) and got dropped after the "leopard hair" game. Then had his shoulder popping out which finished his year.
5. McGuane - Started basically 2 years behind the others in terms of getting a regular game but has made significant improvement this year as a 3rd tall defender. Basically has replaced Chubba this year.
6. Meyer - Has never cemented a run of games in the seniors in 3 years. This year has been a write off in terms of lack of any form and injury.
The main thing to come out of the 2004 draft is we look to be getting 5 decent AFL players from it and so far one star. As to what pick they were selected - who cares. Do that over 5 years and we'll have a whole side come through together in years to come that will challenge. Champion teams of 22 players win flags which makes the whole Tambo vs Franklin debate meaningless. We've had Richo terrifying defences for 15 years and still done bugger all as a club.
-
No ordering, just briefing them
Lids - will be a star
Blingers - the kid needs to be given some slack IMO, On draft day Terry said we wouldn't see the best of bling for 4-5 years. Despite what his detractors say, Blingers will be a very good player/potential star
Meyer - plenty of talent, would be close to the best kick at the club, shame he doesn't work hard enough. Could be a very good player, but will prob end up as a could have been
Patto - hard-working plumber. has come on in leaps and bounds and shapes as a very handy player for us
Polo - love this kid, will be a gun, can tag and win his own ball. Brett Kirk Mk II mark my words
McGuane - kicking is still a glaring deficiency and as MT said is Kellaway down to a tee. Must improve his kicking.
Thought I'd chuck in thursty because he was recruited in the same year and he is going to be a very good player
-
Even Saints coach Ross Lyon thinks Blingers has found form:
"They've got those players back. (Brett) Deledio is playing well again, (Nathan) Foley is in good form, (Richard) Tambling has found form.
"They've changed a bit the way they play, they're more one-on-one and that has enabled some of their young talent to shine through.

I'm quite satisfied with all of the except Meyer. Just can't get a handle on what's happening with this kid. Trade / Delist time will be interesting.
The rest are still developing and none of them have stalled quite yet. Lid's probably the standout but the last month has moved him away from the rest. I agree that that Tambo would be second but again he has probably only move up from 4th on the strength of recent performances. The order of 2,3,4 is very subjective and changes with current form.
If Polo is rated 4th then I would have to say I am quite happy with how the young fellas are coming along since I am very happy with Polo's progress. A bit up and down perhaps but what do you expect from a 20 year old. Bugger about his shoulder.
Throw in Thursty off the rookie list and we did OK in 2004.
Last years draft seems a good one too. Jack, Connors and Edwards are already showing that they belong.
2005 could be our big loser. Casserly is the one I'm most excited about but is he ever going to be fit enough?
I also think we have used the rookie list and our association with Coburg well. Thursty, King, Howat, Graham. None of them a complete waste of time.
-
2005 could be our big loser.
Looking at the whole 2005 draft, it really was very weak.
-
JON, Clever, Casserly will be solid to good players so it was a solid draft for us
humm in the rookie draft is the big bummer :banghead
-
We picked up Matty White in the PSD in 2005 too. Gus and Howat in the rookie draft.
-

I meant for most teams, especially the Dawks :lol
They had plenty of picks in the first 30 as well. :lol

Robbo and Buckenara revisit the 2004 draft in today's Herald-Sun from Hawthorn's view
... Richmond went for Brett Deledio at No. 1, the Hawks opted for Jarryd Roughead, the Bulldogs took Ryan Griffen, the Tigers Richard Tambling and Buddy Franklin fell into the arms of Buckenara at No. 5.
It's been told before, but Buckenara had information Richmond wanted Tambling with No. 4, so he took Roughead first and crossed his fingers on Franklin.
"In doing our homework on the draft, we knew that Richmond had already invited Roughead and his family to their Sunday lunch after the draft," Buckenara recalled.
"They told him they were going to take him at No. 4.
"So if we were going to go Franklin at No. 2, we wouldn't have got Roughead, so we took a punt.
"We got the word that they (Richmond) had gone off Buddy a little bit and everyone was talking about us taking Richard Tambling.
"We were keen on him, too, but we decided to go Roughead at No. 2 and threw the cat among the pigeons.
"So we then felt they (Richmond) would take Tambling ahead of Franklin.
"We were always going to take the two best talls with our first two picks, and then we would take the next best midfielder at No. 7, and that was Jordan Lewis.

So they were doing us a favour by not picking Tambling?
Or did they mean we wanted Roughead at number 4?
Buckenara crossed his fingers on Franklin.... ::)
Didn't they call for extra time when they had their turn for pick 5?

Crock of poo. They lucked out on Buddy plain and simple. If they were so certain he would become the star he most certainly has they would have taken him with their first pick. All this rolling the dice rubbish sounds great in retrospect but everyone, inclusing Hawthorn, rated Bling over Buddy. It was a toss up between Tambling and Roughhead at the time, Franklin wasn't part of the equation.
I hate hearing this 'Drafting-Masterstroke' brought up. It's always sold as intentional but the truth be known the draft feel the way it did because no one rated Buddy above Lids, Bling, Roughhead or Griffin. In fact I remember hearing that experts were surprized that Buddy went as high as he did given his attitude and poor performance at the TAC Cup.
Let's write this article when we near the end of their careers and see where they all rate then.

What a load of crap, that means they also were happy to let the Bulldogs pass him over too. Buckenara said immediately after the draft that they'd hoped that Tambling would fall through to them. If they were so certain on taking Franklin, why did they need to call for extra time and then almost call out the wrong name, needing to go back and correct themselves?

our need at the time was for tall KPP.
one of roughy or buddy should have been on our radar, if we were smart.
if the shoe was on the other foot and we had buddy now, we would be laughing in their faces as they are to us today

If we had taken franklin we wouldnt have Cotchin. You win some, you lose some, for me it will turn out even in the end, Tamblling is coming along, we will hopefully find afew more players that we need and then hopefully our midfield which will have Cotchin as key focus will come to the fore.

another example of a pathetic drafting choice the RFC made.
2 KPP players in this draft and we let them slip through our fingers
it would be the worst drafting error for the last 20 years. RFC and Buldogs should feel like :chuck after watching buddy tonight.
its not tambling's fault but it should rest soley on that fwit Miller and his choices re: drafting

Don't forget that Hawthorn didn't take Buddy with their 1st pick - they took Roughead. Why?
Only reason I raise it is because not 2 but 3 clubs by passed Buddy Franklin with the first 4 picks of that draft.
Why? :rollin

Spot on Infamy. Of the three clubs there was only one that stuck to and got their planned choice(s) and that was the Bulldogs who wanted Griffen all along. We wanted Deledio at 1 and Roughead at 4 whereas the Hawks wanted Tambling and Roughead. They went for Roughead at 2 hoping we'd go for a KPP at 4 (Franklin) allowing Tambling to slip through to 5. Watch the replay of the 2004 draft again and the Hawks hesitate and call for time at pick 5. No doubt it worked out great for them especially as they had a large developing young core of smalls/mids already on the list at the time from 2000-2002 but that's a nice piece of rewritten history by Buckenara in that article.
In any case after last night it should be the Doggies who should get castigated over passing on Buddy when they expect a 182cm 32 y.o. at FF and a 186cm at CHF to win finals.

thats the biggest load of crap MT and you know it.
"it should be the doggies who should get castigated over passing on buddy"
MT shall i remind you we had 2 picks inside the top 5 of which the dogs had just let me see, 1.
This is the most athletic man possibly ever to play the game and what do we do, choose another mid. please give me a break.
it was the draft that could have propelled us into the top 4-6 right now, instead we are left with the likes of patto, Meyer, tambling, polo, and limbach, who to date have done SFA. dont crap on about Tambling's inside work, its pathetic. That poo makes me laugh when all you go on about it.
What i saw him do this year is MORE than last year. he broke packs ran a bit faster, thats about it. He aint no X factor and NEVER will and all you need to get your RFC goggles off and understand this. We are hoping he may turn out to be Daniel wells or half of him, but he is too timid to make it.
How many goals does he kick? uum SFA. I even hear some of you u crap still crap on abvout the Eagles game, much like Schulz with his 5/6 goal haul against the Lions.
Get over it. We have a habit of holding onto players till their worth nothing e.g pathetic pettifer, Schulz.
If you let this buddy thing get to you which he has then maybe he should be traded. Thats weak.
Lids leads by example. I just thank Geez we got that right.
-
There is nothing we can do about it now Daniel. It happened its over. What counts now is that the club has abit of luck, gets good young players with the picks in our possession. That is all we can do.
-
point taken. I would like to know when its going to be our turn to laugh at other clubs for making the wrong decisions.

I agree 100% on the players listed, but if we can do another Morton type trade then I'm all for it. Djekurra would be nice for a 3rd rounder.
the hawks traded very smart by getting their JON hay and thomo draft picks and have built their side around that.
Thing you need to remember though is that the Hawks didn't just decide to move these guys on to get draft picks, both players asked to leave. The fact that North Melbourne gave up ridiculous draft picks for them is not our fault and is not the norm, it would be nice to do trades like this, but no club will ever do something as stupid ever again, aiming for this is unachievable.
thats the biggest load of crap MT and you know it.

it was the draft that could have propelled us into the top 4-6 right now
The Dogs still had two picks in the Top 6 and decided to use Pick 6 on a speculative tall who'd only played the game for a couple of years. How is passing on "the most athletic player to possibly ever play the game" at Pick 3 an excuse when they took far more of a risk with the pick directly after the one used to take him?
Fact is, there were massive concerns on Franklin's mental commitment to the game, it was common knowledge that he could be the best out of that draft and could turn out to be one of the best players in the game. He was also the most likely to be a complete waste of a pick, do a Nathan Ablett and walk away from the game or move back to Perth. He sulked when things didn't go his way, still does, took himself off the ground if he was having a bad day, he slipped to 5 for a reason, if he was such a stand out as a junior he would have gone at #1.
I was going to ignore the Tambling bashing, because it's simply crap, but I will say that the guy has steadily improved every year. Just look at Leon Davis, he's only found form at 27. Tambling is miles ahead of him and will still turn out to be a great midfielder for us.
-
Our 04 list will turn out to be very good imo.
Bling, Meyer and Patto to bolt in 09 ;)

Oh and another thing, if we had Franklin, we wouldn't have Cotchin

Oh and another thing, if we had Franklin, we wouldn't have Cotchin
Really.
Can you please explain that theory?
-
You honestly believe we would have finished wooden spooners in 2007 with Franklin?
If he's as good as everyone says he is then he would have had to win us at least one more game last year
I would have thought that was pretty obvious, do you need everything spelled out for you?

He is as good as everyone says he is pal. Best player ive seen since g/ablett.
I was hoping you wouldn't use that pathetic excuse. What a joke. We woulddn't have Cotch if we had buddy. hahahahaha
That draft was 4 years apart. Lets start comparing every player then shall we.
We fc.uked up and thats all there is to it. Much like we did last year trading away pick 18.

I just thank Geez we got that right.
ad nauseum

You say we got Lids right. Well then if we took Franklin at 1 then we wouldn't have got Lids. Now let me see who had the next chance to pick up Franklin? Oh that's right the Hawks and Dogs but like us didn't take him. The Dogs NEVER get the Griffen vs Buddy debate because only some Tiger supporters are stupid enough to get hung up over every draft choice and the media know it. The Hawks overlooked Judd. They took Dowler at 6 still languishing in the VFL and likely to be offloaded ahead of Paddy Ryder. They also overlooked Joel Selwood for Thorpe who is still in the VFL. Take Selwood out of Geelong's midfield and throw him in Hawthorn's. Throw in Ryder at CHB. A scary thought but I don't think the Hawks care now. Only at Richmond does the past govern the future :sleep.

the only way to shut people like me up Mt is to make the goddam finals FFS in 2009.
Seriously you wonder why people like me exist. I have seen 2 finals series in my life. 2 FFS.
Excuse me if i dont jump for joy at finishing 9th.
Get us into the finals and ill be singing a different tune.
-
I've only seen 2 finals series too and I'm not angry at the world like you seem to be
I don't demand immediate success because to do so sacrifices the long term success
Thompson didn't return Geelong to the finals until his 5th year of coaching them from a better starting point than we had, so why is Wallace graded so harshly?

We're all frustrated Tiger supporters daniel. Only human nature to be so after all this time. I haven't seen Richmond live in a final since the 1982 GF when I was a kid. I was away from melbourne in 95 and OS in 2001. Good timing to go away eh :P.
Still our club will go nowhere if every plan and decision is weighted down by this 28-year baggage of the past which none of us can change. The club needs to accept always where it is at and move forward. We can't afford to have nervous nellies on the board buckling because success isn't coming as quickly as we would all like.
The reality is we have a mostly young side (2004-2007 drafts) who will take time to develop and come through together as a unit. It's not their fault nor problem that the club has been so unsuccessful for almost 3 decades. They need to be given a chance to make their own history both winning and losing. They're going to make mistakes. They are going to lose games they shouldn't or don't show up at all which will frustrate us even more and test our patience that is already at breaking point given the baggage of the past. We are also going to have to add to this group because not all those cubs on our list now will make it or be good enough to take us back to the top. Reality is only half will make it even at the best of clubs. We are also only now pumping in the necessary finances and resources to compete with the best clubs off-field. Even that won't fully take shape until 2010 when both Punt Rd and Craigieburn developments are completed.
If some sense of sanity, stability and focus can return to the club after the current mess is sorted out, the most likely scenario is we may "pinch" a finals appearance with the current crop (no guarantees) then dip down for a year or two once the oldies Richo, Simmo, Browny, etc retire and then bounce back when the current young core hit their prime mid 20s and have plenty of years experience together as a unit which is still 3-4 years away. The top sides have rebuilt their lists over a 7-8 year period and stuck to their original plan of going for youth. That's why the next 2 drafts are so important and why we must draft more of the best kids so that the bounce back is sustainable with no more age and experience gaps on our list.
Anyway I've gone off-topic. What I'm saying is the success or failure of the club's recruiting will be determined over a long period (7-8 years from 2004) in building and developing a team and list that can eventually seriously challenge for a flag (or two). It won't be based on one draft pick in 2004 where we could've/should've got Franklin. Champion teams win premierships.
-
So we didn't get Franklin. Get over it.
-
The Dogs NEVER get the Griffen vs Buddy debate because only some Tiger supporters are stupid enough to get hung up over every draft choice and the media know it.
The Dogs have made some terrible drafting decisions with early picks recently. Farren Ray, Tom Williams, Tim Walsh and we haven't seen Jarrad Grant yet.
When you think back to the 2004 draft, we had Richo, a young Schulz showing a few promising signs, we weren't crying out for KPP. We needed some midfielders.
The Dogs haven't had a forward since Simon Beasley and chose another medium sized on-baller. Griffen was one of the better Dogs on Friday, but he didn't kick 8.

Here is AFL site's Matt Burgan's phantom draft prior to the 2004 draft:
PRIORITY
1 - RICHMOND - Brett Deledio
(Murray Bushrangers), 18 April 1987, 188cm, 81kg
With Richmond in pole position for the first time since 1989, the Tigers are almost certain to call out - 'Player 110398, Brett Deledio, Murray Bushrangers' and pounce on brilliant young inside midfielder with the first selection in the 2004 National Bank's AFL Draft. Hailing from Kyabram in country Victoria, Deledio, has been a standout player at junior level, having won the Kevin Sheehan Medal for the best player in the National Bank's AFL under-16 championships, while he graduated from the AIS/AFL Academy and was All-Australian at under-18 level in 2004, after he averaged 24 disposals during the carnival. He was later named in the 2004 TAC Cup team of the year. Deledio also shone during the recent Draft Camp, when he finished fourth overall in the 20-metre sprint with a time of 2.90 seconds, while his 92-centremetre running vertical jump was in the top bracket of players. Also a talented cricketer, Deledio is a super-competitive player, with his marking overhead and smartness around goal a feature of his game. Southern Districts dynamo Richard Tambling and outstanding South Adelaide midfielder Ryan Griffen are also in the mix for the number one title, but expect Deledio to be in the yellow and black after the meeting kicks off at 10am on Saturday morning. Deledio's father Wayne played one match for Carlton in 1975.
2 - HAWTHORN - Richard Tambling
(Southern Districts), 12 September 1986, 181cm, 74kg
With Deledio expected to be the first player claimed in the 2004 Draft, expect Hawthorn to quickly snap up Tambling with the first of its three selections in the top seven. Tambling has been an elite performer at junior level, having been named the best player at both under-16 and under-18 level, which earned him the Alan McLean Medal and the Hunter Harrison Medal respectively. During his three matches at this year's National Bank's AFL under-18 championships, he notched up 61 disposals to cap off a stellar carnival. Tambling also captained The Allies during grand final week this year, when he led the side to victory in the inaugural National Bank's AFL under-18 Rising Stars Cup against Victoria. An AIS/AFL Academy member in 2002/03, Tambling shone at the recent Draft Camp, where he recorded a time of 2.87 seconds in the 20-metre sprint and a vertical leap of 93 centremetres, which were among the best tested this year. The dashing Northern Territorian goalkicking midfielder with the blistering pace and silky skills will be an excitement machine at Glenferrie.
3 - WESTERN BULLDOGS - Ryan Griffen
(South Adelaide), 27 July 1986, 187cm, 85kg
The Bulldogs will be rapt with Griffen at number three, despite the fact several good judges believe he is capable of being this year's number one draftee. Griffen, who captained South Australia at this year's National Bank's under-18 championships, had a terrific carnival and he was duly rewarded with All-Australian selection. A medium-sized inside midfielder, Griffen has genuine football talent, is smart around goal and has good vision. He is rated by many as simply a 'natural onballer'. An AIS/AFL graduate, Griffen received the Mike stuff Scholarship in 2004, while he played for South Adelaide's senior team in the SANFL during 2004, despite the fact he was playing under duress with a knee injury.
ROUND ONE
4 - RICHMOND - Jarryd Roughead
(Gippsland Power), 23 March 1987, 193cm, 88kg
Likely to be the first 'tall' selected in the 2004 Draft, Roughead is a left-footed key forward/defender from Leongatha in country Victoria. The Tigers are poised to select Roughead, just ahead of Perth key forward/defender Lance Franklin, with their second selection. The 'home grown' factor may play a part in the decision-making process, although Franklin, along with Geelong Falcons ruckman John Meesen, who has come into the equation recently, is also a chance to be selected by the Tigers at number four. Meesen can't be discounted. An AIS/AFL Academy member in 2003/04, Roughead represented Vic Country in this year's National Bank's AFL under-18 championships. This coincided with an outstanding year with the Gippsland Power, where he led the club's goalkicking with 46 majors, which included a six-goal haul against the Dandenong Stingrays in round 18 in the TAC Cup. Also a talented basketballer, Roughead gained selection in the 2004 TAC Cup team of the year.
5 - HAWTHORN - Lance Franklin
(Perth), 30 January 1987, 196cm, 87kg
A tantalising player, 'Buddy' Franklin was rated as a potential number one draftee in some quarters earlier in the year and although that may have slipped a fraction, he is still regarded as a top-six selection. The athletic key forward/defender is agile for his size, while he is a booming kick and a good mark. An AIS/AFL Academy member in 2003/04, Franklin made his senior debut with Perth in the WAFL this year. He was also rewarded with the Mike stuff Scholarship in 2003. Franklin represented Western Australia at this year's National Bank's AFL under-18 championships and kicked the winning goal in the dying seconds against Victoria Metropolitan to help give his side a two-point victory at Skilled Stadium. Franklin remains a genuine candidate for Richmond at number four, but with Roughead firming as a Tiger, the Hawks are likely to snap-up Franklin with their second pick, just ahead of Queenslander Tom Williams, who has stunned the football community with his ability, after switching from a rugby union background to Australian Rules in less than 12 months. He, too, has more than interested the brown and gold.
6 - WESTERN BULLDOGS - Tom Williams
(Morningside), 17 July 1986, 196cm, 87kg
There is no doubt Williams will be one of the most fascinating stories in this particular meeting. Along with his rugby union background, his all-round sporting ability includes swimming and basketball, but his athletic prowess is set to take him into the AFL. His rating has shot up considerably since the Draft Camp, where he finished second overall in the three-kilometre time-trial with a time of 10 minutes 36 seconds. The Bulldogs are set to pounce on Williams with their second selection, yet he will enter the thoughts of Hawthorn at number five, while Richmond is also not out of the question with its second selection. Williams was a member of the 'developing talls' group in the AIS/AFL Academy squad during 2003/04, while he represented Queensland in the 2004 National Bank's AFL under-18 championships. It has been a remarkable year for a player who has played fewer than 15 matches since taking up the code a year ago. Also, not out of the ball-park at number six for the Bulldogs are West Adelaide ruckman Cameron Wood and Glenelg midfielder/forward Danny Meyer.
He's other picks for us were:
12 - RICHMOND - Fabian Deluca
(Eastern Ranges), 27 January 1987, 203cm, 97kg
16 - RICHMOND - Ryan Willitts
(Northern Knights), 23 January 1987, 197cm, 100kg
20 - RICHMOND - Ruory Kirkby
(Bendigo Pioneers), 2 April 1986, 192cm, 80kg
36 - RICHMOND - Ryan Jackson
(Northern Knights), 4 April 1987, 188cm, 78kg
52 - RICHMOND - Dean Limbach
(Calder Cannons), 25 October 1986, 192cm, 77kg
65 - RICHMOND - Mark Graham
(Hawthorn), 13 March 1973, 190cm, 90kg

Crock of poohe.
Stripes
rubbish stripes.
our need at the time was for tall KPP.
one of roughy or buddy should have been on our radar, if we were smart.
if the shoe was on the other foot and we had buddy now, we would be laughing in their faces as they are to us today
Because our midfield was so awesome eh?
Fool.

6 - WESTERN BULLDOGS - Tom Williams
(Morningside), 17 July 1986, 196cm, 87kg
....Also, not out of the ball-park at number six for the Bulldogs are West Adelaide ruckman Cameron Wood and Glenelg midfielder/forward Danny Meyer.
I didn't follow phantom drafts too closely back in 2004, but it's surprising to see Meyer so highly rated. I thought we took him as a bit of a roughy.
PS. To anybody bagging our drafting in 2004, just thank god that Matt Burgan wasn't our recruiting manager. I don't think any of his picks from 12 onwards are even playing anymore.

I remember Meyer being as highly rated as #6, and many thought top 10. Was seen as a good get @ 12.
Player comparisons with the like of young N Browns/Dal Santo type.
Got 20 touches once against Geelong as a kid, and in 1st pre-season was called the best kick at the club.
Fingers crossed he becomes part of our back 6 :cheers
Good end to season getting fit and in form.
