Geelong v Coburg Tigers
VFL Record preview
Collins injects belief into young charges.
When season 2007 kicked off, few thought the Coburg Tigers would be vying with Geelong for a preliminary final berth come the first week of the finals.
Given post-season exodus of experienced VFL players, Coburg was cast as also-rans.
However, that was certainly selling short the ability of Andy Collins to inject young talent into the team, mix it with a few VFL veterans and a sprinkling of AFL players from Richmond and come up with a successful combination.
Coburg could not have entered the finals on a more positive note – a 19-point win against premiership favourite Sandringham at the Trevor Barker Beach Oval. And with ruckman Travis Ronaldson providing the on-field leadership and direction, the Tigers will also be able to utilise some experienced Richmond players.
Coburg’s biggest problem is that it bumps into a Geelong team that has been dominant all season. The Cats dropped just four matches, and all were by 18 points or less.
Conversely, the club’s smallest winning margin was 13 points against the Bendigo Bombers in round 20. Its previous lowest winning margin was 28 points against Northern Bullants in round eight, with an ability to kick big scores extremely prevalent. The Cats kicked 12 scores of 15 or more majors, which matched the competition-high kicked by Sandringham.
And, Geelong has possibly the best big-game player in the competition – its captain James Byrne. As evidenced in the VFL representative match against Western Australia, Byrne is a magnifi cent leader and takes his game to new heights in crunch matches.
Geelong also has a vast array of AFL talent at its disposal, headlined by former AFL skipper Steven King, exciting youngster Tom Hawkins and seasoned campaigners in Charlie Gardiner, Shannon Byrnes and Henry Playfair.
Geelong plays an attacking brand of football, and its ability to apply scoreboard pressure makes it a most formidable team. Geelong inflicted a 37-point defeat on the Coburg Tigers in round 17, the clubs’ only meeting for the season.

Could someone pls enlighten me as to who the "few VFL veterans" at Coburg are? ???
I thought the oldest player on the list was about 23.

Good point FF - I would think they maybe talking about the likes of Ronaldson, Caruso N, Shelton and Nevilles that have played 3 seaosns of VFL. 3 seasons in the VFL these days is a lot ;D

Shows how many injuries we have. There's no restriction on the number of RFC players this week yet there's only 9. No Peterson even though he got 20 possies and 2 goals with the Coburg ressies last week.

From the VFL Record
The Coburg Tigers, with an accumulative 301 VFL games, have the least VFL experience. Captain Travis Ronaldson is the most seasoned VFL player, but Sandringham has eight players who have played more than his 70 games. The Zebras have a total of 988 VFL games’ experience, a whopping 505 more than their nearest rival, the Casey Scorpions.

Coburg Tigers spring surprise
01 September 2007 Herald Sun
Geoff Poulter
THE Coburg Tigers, the big improvers this season, have drawn the short straw by having to face in-form Geelong in a qualifying final at Port Melbourne tomorrow.
The Tigers, eliminated in the first week of the 2006 finals, finished third on the ladder. The second-placed Cats have stood out in recent rounds to become flag favourite, with reigning premier Sandringham's growing injury list.
"We have exceeded expectations," said Coburg coach Andrew Collins, whose side earned the double chance.
"(In a pre-season poll) nine out of 12 tipsters picked us to finish in the bottom two.
"I don't think anyone had us in the eight.
"We understand that it is now a different part of the season and that other sides will get stronger.
"But we will get some young Richmond (AFL-affiliate) boys back. Jay Schulz is only young, Paddy Bowden will provide the experience."
But with the AFL program a week behind the VFL, Coburg will not have access to as many players as it would like from Richmond until next weekend.
"Even the following week with Richmond's injury list, we probably won't go through the finals with the 12 to 10 (maximum AFL/VFL player ratio) that we'd like," Collins said.
Collins praised the Cats, who have few injuries.
"One of the great compliments Geelong should have is that they have had the majority of their list," he said.
"That is great coaching management, physical education management. All credit to their whole program."
Coburg was buoyed by its upset win at Sandringham last round.
"They only had six players from AFL level and we had nine, so I think both squads really got stretched," he said.
Collins said they had built their club around a core of VFL-listed players, including Paul Shelton, Alister Neville, Travis Ronaldson, Jarrod Sylvester and Nat Caruso.
Geelong will provide stiff opposition with Tom Hawkins, Henry Playfair, Todd Grima and Charlie Gardiner in attack and Steven King in the ruck.
The Cats have a quality centreline of Jason Davenport, James Byrne and Ryan Gamble, with David Johnson, Tim Callan and Max Rooke in defence.

Good stuff by Coburg that quarter into a strong breeze.
Schulz best RFC player. 2 goals and more improtantly working hard crashing packs and keeping the ball in Coburg's forward 50.

Krak 10
Schulz 8
Hopefully we can run out the game with the breeze.
-
Geelong first goal. We're 10 points down. Falling down up forward :-\.
-
Some tired bodies and minds. Too many lazy long bombs. Not looking good for the Burgers. 16 points down.
-
Hughes. :-\
I dont think the ball likes this kid.
Puts his body on the line more than once for a big man but cant really get the pill.
Loved his effort but you do really need to get some disposals as well as the many 1%ers Clever.
Bit disappointed.

Gawn - too tired
Play winner of Scorpians Port next week

Game over. 29 points down and Geelong running all over us.
-
Great goal Connors. Back to 21.

Goals: Krak 3, Connors 3, Schulz 2, Paddy 2, Carnell 2, Gazzo, Caruso, Farrelly, Shelton, Neville
-
Coburg just ran out of legs 2/3s the way through the 3rd quarter. Geelong just proved you need talls who don't get any shorter as the game goes along.
Cass was the best RFC player IMO. Rebounded well.
Connors was classy and finished with 3 goals but his direct opponent ended up being very effective for Geelong.
The rest were just like the whole team. Simply ran out of legs and went missing.
I guess the Burgers can still be positive if they can get Silvester back to replace Morgan and can pick from Jack, Jacko, McGuane, Hyde and Moore from Richmond. Like Richmond though Coburg don't have a second ruck to help out Ronaldson with no Gus or Knobel to help out.

Coburg plays Port Melbourne in the semi final next week (most likely next Sunday) at Port Melbourne. If we win we'll play Williamstown in a fortnight's time.
The other semi final is Sandringham vs North Ballarant. The winner plays Geelong.
-
taking on a professional trained club like Geelong with 12 AFL l;isted players in the side + the 4 rookie listed = 16 AFL players in total was a huge task & even though the Burgers ran out of legs they played some good football
sad to see morgan go down but no-one can complain about the effort put in by the burgers against that geelong outfit
great effort lads Port Melbourne next week
-
Just ran out of legs in the last. Intensity was great in the 3rd quarter, then in the 4th it was non-existent.
Thought the umps butchered us all day, the inconsistency was appalling. (I felt I had to let them know all about it at half time as they came off, unforunately nothing changed in the second half).
Connors is going to be good, damn good. Reading of the play, movement, disposal, decision making, all good. I had him down for about 4 assists today.
-
All I can say is "CONNORS !!!!" He is gonna be a beauty.
Casserly is impressive also.
The other RFC listed players - meh.
JON = OMG
-
only watched the first half and thought JON Was pretty good
-
only watched the first half and thought JON Was pretty good
JON cost us 2 goals he didnot know about ;D poor fella
the doctor had it wrong he should have come off you could tell he was not with it
-
on a better playing arena like the Optus Oval geelong outfit will be very hard to beat
Unless they get some injuries in the senior side l cant see any team beating them

'Professional' Cats withstand Tiger challenge to win week off
Chris Walker | September 3, 2007 | The Age
GEELONG earned itself a week off and a place in the 2007 preliminary finals after defeating a valiant Coburg 22.16 (148) to 17.15 (117) in a pulsating qualifying final at TEAC Oval.
Coburg coach Andy Collins labelled it a match of amateurs versus professionals, alluding to the 16 AFL-listed players and rookies lining up for Geelong. The Tigers appeared undaunted by their bigger and more physical opponents, however, and relied on their pace to challenge the premiership favourites for three seesawing quarters.
The first quarter was marred by a nasty collision that left Tiger defender Jason Morgan with a fractured left tibia, stretching the undersized Coburg defence. It would prove too much in the end, with 19-year-old Tom Hawkins pulling down 15 marks and kicking four goals in an impressive attacking display.
Coburg held a narrow five-point lead at the half-time break. Andrew Krakouer created a goal for the ninth lead change of the match midway through the third term and Coburg had the momentum.
Livewire Daniel Connors then kicked a crafty goal and, just 60 seconds later, eluded a tackle and unselfishly stabbed a pass to Michael Farrelly who rewarded his generosity. With a three-goal buffer, the Tigers looked like causing an upset, but in the blink of an eye, the lead was erased. Rookie Liam Bedford goaled first and Trent West followed with another.
Steven King, excellent all day in the ruck, split the middle with a 60-metre bomb on the three-quarter-time siren to pinch the advantage. The lead would not change again.
In the final term, gun rookie Jason Davenport capped his best-on-ground performance with two of Geelong's seven final-quarter goals. He finished his day with 29 possessions and four goals.
The onballer, who turns 22 tomorrow, said he was looking forward to next week's rest: "It will be nice to be have the week off next week.
"It was very exciting to have Kingy back in the side today. He made a big difference."
Geelong coach Leigh Tudor was pleased with his team's ability to respond to the challenge: "It was a great win in the end. It was a real arm-wrestle and we had to persist all day, which we were able to do."
Also yesterday, Port Melbourne, having grabbed its spot in the finals in the last week of the home-and-away season, defeated the Casey Scorpions by 13 points at Casey Fields.
The must-win match was played with the intense pressure that marked all four of the VFL finals this weekend. Port's midfield was relentless all day and Tim Hazell and Luke Cotchett kicked three goals apiece.
Port Melbourne will return home next week to play the Coburg Tigers in a do-or-die semi final.
The other semi final will between reigning premier Sandringham and North Ballarat.

...and look away handballs, and snappy, precise decision-making and skills............and truck loads of confidence

Casserly is impressive also.
The other RFC listed players - meh.
JON = OMG
Connors is so creative, he will choose the right option more often than not, never seems to put other players under pressure, in fact his touch of the ball usually gets us out of a jam.
I have not seen a lot of Coburg, only what's been on TV, but JON hasn't shown me anything to get even a little excited about, not even enough to think he should be in the team for a Hyde or Tivendale. Let's hope he puts on a bit more weight and has a good pre-season.
-

JON = OMG
Cleve as a young KPP in his second year has time on his side but Cass is the only one I have any confidence in in making it from our 2005 draftees.
On another point, it's only one game but I think Neville's stocks would have gone down a touch yesterday. He can get a heap of footy but his disposal under the increased pressure of the VFL finals was a concern. If that was the norm he would be exposed at AFL level.
-
Nah I'm getting it okay Moi
Coburg one down already. Morgan looks like he's broken his leg :(. Poor kid.
Krak goals. Only 1 point down into the breeze.
Yeah it was a break - looked bloody awful as they carried around the boundary :'(
