Tigers win Wallace race

TERRY WALLACE will replace Danny Frawley as coach of Richmond, with an announcement expected within days.
In a coup for the embattled club, the 15th-placed Tigers have beaten bottom-of-the-ladder Hawthorn to the punch in recruiting Wallace.
A source close to the Tigers last night revealed Wallace's appointment would be ratified at a regular board meeting on Tuesday night, pending finalisation of arrangements with his management group.
The recommendation of Wallace from the three-member selection panel will be made official in a presentation to the Tigers board.
The panel consisted of football director Greg Miller, consultant David Parkin and alternate board member Bryan Wood, who was brought on to the coaching sub-committee late last week as part of a peacemaking deal between president Clinton Casey and rebel leader Brendan Schwab.
With four games remaining, Richmond will be in the unique situation of having a current coach and an official coach in waiting.
Hawthorn will be disappointed to have missed out on Wallace as he was their priority to sign for next season after they sacked Peter Schwab.
But events over the weekend bought Hawthorn more time to find a replacement, especially Adelaide's upset win over the Kangaroos.
The Crows' victory, after last weekend's 141-point pounding by the Lions, may have clinched the full-time coaching position beyond this season for caretaker Neil Craig, who has won two of his five games since the demise of Gary Ayres.
Both Wallace and former Swans coach Rodney Eade held formal discussions with the Crows.
If Eade is to re-ignite his head-coaching career, it can only be with Hawthorn, currently being coached by caretaker Donald McDonald.
The Hawks can take their time to decide between multiple premiership players Eade and Ayres and a group of assistant coaches from other clubs.
The only competition for Eade's services will come from Collingwood, who have offered him a newly-created specialist coaching position under Mick Malthouse.
Wallace, 45, spent the best part of the past two years working in the media since quitting as coach of the Western Bulldogs with one round remaining in 2002.
He was set to be appointed coach of the Sydney Swans, who sacked Eade in 2002, but they opted for club hero Paul Roos.
Wallace started coaching mid-year at the Whitten Oval in 1996. He coached the Bulldogs in 148 games for 79 wins, 67 losses and two draws. In almost six full years, he took the Dogs to the finals in four of them for a total of seven finals matches.
They were knocked out in consecutive preliminary finals in 1997 and 1998 by eventual premiers Adelaide. Wallace is well regarded as a master tactician and an innovative coach.
He has some pedigree at the Tigers, having played 11 games for them in 1987 after falling out with Hawthorn following the 1986 premiership victory.
Wallace played 174 games for the Hawks in nine seasons and played in three premierships.
After a single season at Richmond, he finished his playing career with the Bulldogs for whom he won two best-and-fairest awards.
He won Hawthorn's best-and-fairest awards in 1981 and 1983 but has not had the best of relationships with the club since leaving. He was controversially overlooked for the club's team of the century and was not invited to the function.

That's great if it is true but I will wait to hear it officially from Wallace himself sitting at a press conference wearing a Richmond top in between Casey and Miller with the traditional tiger head and skin in front of him. Then we'll know that he is ours :thumbsup.

IN a season of desperate disappointment for Nathan Brown, some good news at last. His mentor and good friend Terry Wallace has accepted the coaching position at Richmond.
Brown left the Bulldogs at the end of last season. Wallace left at the end of the season before. From next year the two will be reunited. They were a potent force at the Bulldogs, expect them to be a potent force at Richmond.
In a season of desperate disappointment for president Clinton Casey, some good news at last. The appointment of Wallace is a coup for his board. They had been under pressure from supporters and former board member Brendan Schwab after another grim loss had been forecast, and Danny Frawley could deliver them just four wins so far this season.
Casey and his men have snared the best credentialled coach available. Wallace's record at the Bulldogs was impressive, if not outstanding.
He was innovative at the Bulldogs and has not had his eye off the game since he left. His newspaper column is challenging, his commentary on television insightful.
In a season of desperate disappointment for football operations manager Greg Miller, some good news at last. Miller had put his faith in Frawley to turn around two poor seasons when the club could only manage a collective 14 wins. After a bright start against Collingwood the Tigers returned to type. Plodding, predictable. Lacking skill and passion.
Miller also watched Daniel Wells blossom into one of the most exciting young players in the competition. Wells went to the Kangaroos when Miller gave up the second pick at the national draft to secure mid-fielder Kane Johnson at the end of season 2002. Johnson has been serviceable, Wells mouth-watering.
In a season of desperate disappointment for Brendan Schwab, more bad news. The pending appointment of Wallace has left his challenge without meaning or momentum. Schwab quit the board at the beginning of the year and had pulled together a ticket to take on Casey. With him was another board member Peter Welsh, who like Schwab quit the board stating he did not have the time to devote to club matters.
Schwab appears to have been utterly outmanoeuvred in the past week. Last Wednesday, he settled on a compromise with Casey that left the incumbent president well placed.
Casey agreed that Schwab's would-be football director Bryan Wood could sit with the sub-committee organised to find Frawley's replacement. Clearly, Wallace had all but signed and Wood attended just one briefing with Miller before news that Wallace had agreed to become Tiger coach.
Casey's other concession was to allow former Tiger treasurer and Schwab candidate Mike Humphris to look at Richmond's books.
It was a concession of no account, for Richmond's books have been more widely read than the Da Vinci Code.
Casey has now delivered a new chief executive officer, the highly regarded Steven Wright. Wallace, the best option for the club, is the new coach. And the club has a business plan that has the AFL salivating it appears so well measured and researched. As well, Casey has the unofficial support of the AFL heavies. Schwab does not. Nothing like it.
Schwab had been rumbling about a potential challenge for months. It looks now that there was too much rumbling and not nearly enough action.
Wallace and Miller have much work to do nonetheless. Richmond's list must be revitalised. They will have the opportunity through the draft and may well have a priority pick if the Tigers cannot win two more games.
They have players that would bring some fierce bidding at trade time as well. They need to think long and hard about some of the club's big names like Matthew Richardson and Brad Ottens. A new captain would be a priority.
In a season of desperate disappointment for Richmond members and fans some good news at last. Suddenly, Richmond is shaping as an exciting club to follow.

Oh oh! I have woken up this morning and read the news and I cant help being excited by it.
If its true, lets hope a new era of stability and unity can begin at beloved club.
We all know tough decisions will have to be made and rest assured Terry and his team do it.
Lets see who else will jump on our bandwagon now! :cheers

Typical Clinton interview - says alot without saying anything although he did say when asked about the article in The Australian that The Australian last week had stories which seemed far-fetched that turned out to be true. Make of that what you will.
Said he expected Miller to update him on the coaching situation at the board meeting tomorrow.
Casey also confirmed as WP said that Steven Wright starts as CEO on the 18th August.
Miller earlier this morning said there were still a couple of interviews today. Morning glory boys quipped that they would be basically telling other applicants - thanks but no thanks.
Anyway better off waiting until it's official. Agree with froars - Jackstar's almost there to collect :bow

If you listen between the lines of casey's comments then he's probably ours. But as MT said in as many words, I'll believe it when I see the press conference.

In Greece, when you sign a big player/coach for your team, you go to the airport to greet them and the press conference....I can just see 200-300 people signing Tiger Army Tiger Army outide the Press Conference.....

Terry Wallace and Richmond have denied reports that he has already been appointed as coach of the Tigers for 2005.
The Australian reported on Monday that the Tigers had beaten Hawthorn in the race to sign Wallace, who was coach of the Bulldogs between 1996 and 2002.
Wallace told Southern Cross Radio on Monday morning that no deal had been done, while Tiger football director Greg Miller told SEN 1116 that while he had a preferred candidate for the position, no decision had been made.
Miller said he had interviews lined up with two candidates on Monday, but would not rule out a decision being made by the end of the week.
Richmond has been looking for a new coach for about a month after deciding not to continue the five-year tenure of Danny Frawley.

I know its unorthodox but its damn good. Dont you remember after the Carlton Night game in 98/99 what was happening at the bottom of the Olympic Stand near the old club rooms.....that was awesome.
Nothing better than 5.000 fans at Athens airport saluting the players on the tarmac when they come back with a positive European result....

Theres no point harping because its off-topic....but its not a world event. They do it whenever they feel something important happened to their club....hence the Wallace example.
But they do it for wins on the road as well,i.e. if Richmond go to West Coast and grind out a tough win......people would go and celebrate. That is my point.....

Ok I just think the idea of hanging outside a press conference singing is a bit weird, but hey each to his own,if it doesnt hurt anyone and everyone has a good time then fine! :thumbsup

Ancient history but anyway here's Dermie's (Hawthorn's) version of events of how we ended up with Wallace and they didn't....
Dermott Brereton who was on the Hawthorn FC board back then , revealed on Sen Crunch Time , that the eight Hawthorn FC board members were so impressed with Terry Wallaces presentation to them that the coaching job was his if they heard from Terry that he wanted to coach Hawthorn.
But as Dermott revealed when Terry was asked by them "Do you want to coach Hawthorn FC"
Wallace , who had already had 5 meetings with Richmond answered "I'll need 24 - 48 hours to think about it"
Dermott said that members of the board were surprised , thinking that Terry would have said , yes I would love to coach Hawthorn. If Terry had of said those words , they would have started the contractual negotiations for him to be the Hawthorn coach then and there.
Terry Wallace was in he Sen studio when this story was told on air and confirmed it.
