Top 10 draft pick, wasn't he?

As I've said before, it's not only us that makes poor drafting decisions. Alll clubs do it.

We've just had a bad track record at plucking a star or two. We only seem to draft handy players who all have flaws, which may or may not be due to our poor player development.

Ottens, Fiora, Schulz, Pettifer have all been high draft picks, all have been inconsistent and at their best only handy (apart from Schulz) players.

It would be very interesting to see how we would have developed a Pavlich (Fiora draft), Kerr (Pettifer draft), C. Cornes (Ottens draft) or Kade Simpson (Schulz draft)

That's true GB. West Coast had 3 first round picks from 1999-2000 that failed for instance.

The problem at Richmond over the years though is we haven't drafted enough kids (eg: trading away good picks) and enough rookies and so we rely on virtually all the kids we draft making it for us to succeed. That's a poor strategy as about only a third to a half of all draftees at best end up making it at AFL level. We also spend the least on recruiting meaning we lack people on the ground to study each kid in depth rather than just from AFL supplied tapes.

In that same draft, we had 2 picks in the top 50. Alex Gilmour and Tom Roach ::)  Wont mention Shane Morrison at 64 either :shh

That 2003 draft was one of the weakest in recent times especially after pick 20. We also got Browny for pick 6 (Bradley) and Holland. The killer drafts for us were five of the six before this one.

Picking up Roachy was a political decision.
