I'd be first happy with us just getting past the first round and beating the Saints. Both things we haven't done for a few years.

Title: NAB Cup side - Best 22 or play the cubs?
Post by: one-eyed on December 27, 2007, 12:59:24 AM
The NAB Cup will be the first time we'll see the Tigers in action next year including our rookies. So should we play our best 22 and try and go out and get an early win against the Saints after not winning a game until midseason in 2007 and knowing the loser will be sent up to Cairns OR stuff the NAB Cup, play the cubs and get more game time into them with the focus more on round 1 versus Carlton?
Title: Re: NAB Cup side - Best 22 or play the cubs?
Post by: richmondrules on December 27, 2007, 08:24:24 AM
I voted "The Kids" but I think it should be a mixture of both. Mainly best 22 but there are a few players with experience that can be rested to allow some kids to be rotated through the team. Don't want to overwork our veterans. A balance of both ensuring our best 22 get some good game time by the time the proper season starts and allowing some of the kids get a taste also.
Title: Re: NAB Cup side - Best 22 or play the cubs?
Post by: WilliamPowell on December 27, 2007, 10:21:04 AM
I think there is a argument to say the bulk of our best 22 are our kids anyway :thumbsup

I would play the 22 who deserve to play, that is the ones who have shone during pre-season.

However, I would encourage playing at least a couple of the rookies = Collard & Silvestor

if stkilda play their full side we will get killed with that lineup, both on the scoreboard and also injuries

i agree with WP, play the guys who deserve a game due to their pre seasons and also a few senior guys who will need the run

i hope we take the nap cup seriously and go out to win, we stay on good grounds and the prize money doesnt hurt either :thumbsup

It won't surprise me if all 4 rookies play in our first NAB Cup game. Three of them are 22 years old and I don't think Simmo will play so Cartledge in for him.

really?  ;D

i really want to see Collard play NAB and tear it up. I really hope Rawlings gets the most out of Collard and lets him settle this year at the Burgs. He's a real talent if we can get him comfortable around the club. Make him feel he belongs.

when u play, u play to win full stop

play the best 22 always no matter what time of yr it is

With Simmo, Cogs, Cotchin and Connors possibility all missing the Saints game, playing our best 24 (6 on the bench) probably includes rookies and a few cubs.
Title: 2008 NAB Cup rules
Post by: one-eyed on January 16, 2008, 02:36:11 PM
What do we all think of the new NAB bench rules?

* A cap of the number of interchanges. Each team can have 16 interchanges per quarter, for a total of 64 for the game.

* The number of interchange players increases for each team from six to eight.

* A "no-go" zone at the centre bounce, where players will give away a free kick if they are behind the umpire.

Bloody AA can't leave the game alone can he  ::). Geelong played some of the best footy in years and this idiot still wants to change the rules even after saying the AFL wouldn't be this year :banghead.

More players on the bench only gives more advantage to clubs with stronger and deeper lists.

Other clubs are saying they won't be playing their older players due to the interchange limitation...

---------------
Clubs won't play stars under new interchange limit
17 January 2008   Herald Sun
Jon Ralph

THE AFL's leading clubs have warned the league's new capped interchange rule will dramatically strip star power from next month's NAB Cup.

Victorian power clubs Collingwood, Hawthorn and Essendon said yesterday the rule would make it impossible to give veterans and stars limited minutes in the pre-season competition.

Instead they will be forced to wait for the NAB Challenge, where interchange is unlimited, to ease in their best players.

I agree with the HUN's article.

The NAB cup is for getting in some match practice, easing players who have had long term injuries back into the action and just generally experimenting with positions.

Just leave the game alone Anderson, you knob.

Didn't have a clue who he was but gee he impressed me. was like a little sweeper all day, got tons of kicks. Told my old man that he would make an impact this year (07) and I was right. Go the little Plumber  :).

What a surprise. The AFL making rule changes just for change sake.

And a blood rule will counts as a interchange  ???.

Quote
The AFL's reasoning is that with interchange numbers rising significantly, there is a concern over the possibility of more injuries.

"They admitted they didn't really have enough evidence and there wasn't anything to suggest injuries were going up, so we thought that's good, they're not going to do anything," Roos said.

ST KILDA'S determination to hit the home-and-away season at full pace will see veterans Robert Harvey and Fraser Gehrig play its Round 1 NAB Cup clash against Richmond.

Also the Pies reckon clubs will tank out of the NAB Cup because of this new cap on the number of interchanges. Terry said on 3aw a week or so ago that we'll only use 6 on the bench instead of the allowed 8.

Terry said on 3aw a week or so ago that we'll only use 6 on the bench instead of the allowed 8.

Terry should just concentrate on bloody winning a game and not play Einstein thinking he knows best.  Nothing wrong with fielding a full bench, under the proviso the last two on the interchange will know they won't get a run, and just a taste running on the arena.  If we sustain injuries during the game ( I hope not), that's when the full bench may be used.  Terry wants to be different but he's struggling to get the runs on the board.

A few niggles and underdone players at Moorabbin

Quote
Hayes has just resumed running after a calf niggle, while Ball and Brendon Goddard have started doing skills.

"(Adam) Schneider also had a niggle, but he's OK," Drain said.

Defender Matt Maguire is also progressing well, but won't be rushed back.

Will Thursfield and Luke McGuane are also unlikely to feature during the pre-season competition.

“It’s all about round one. We’re not super hell-bent on getting players back for the NAB Cup,” King said.

“The NAB Cup will look after itself. We want to give some opportunities to young players instead.”

No Thursty or McGuane must mean Silvester is guaranteed to play at FB with Sarge at CHB. My guess for the first NAB Cup game:

B.    King       Silvester    Bowden
HB: Morton     Schulz     McMahon
C:   Johnson   Newman    Jackson
HF:  Richo        Polak        Pettifer
F:    Brown      Deledio     Collard
R:  Simmonds   Foley      Tambling

Int (eight from): Cartledge, Riewoldt, Raines, Rance, Collins, Polo, Tuck, Patto, Hyde, Edwards, White, Casserly, JON, Tivs, Hughes

If the Foley groin injury rumour has any truth then he'll of course miss. Cogs won't play yet.

B.    King       Silvester    Bowden
HB: Morton     Schulz     McMahon
C:   Johnson   Newman    Jackson
HF:  Richo        Polak        Pettifer
F:    Brown      Deledio     Collard
R:  Simmonds   Foley      Tambling

Int (eight from): Cartledge, Riewoldt, Raines, Rance, Collins, Polo, Tuck, Patto, Hyde, Edwards, White, Casserly, JON, Tivs, Hughes

Interesting team. Could it be more different from last years?
Virtually a brand new spine.

Finding it hard to pick 6 or 8 or whatever number Plough will use on the bench who'll play. There's an argument for most to get a game based on preseason form.

Miller said Patto is playing. We'll need all the ruckmen we can get with the Saints playing Gardiner, King, Rix as well as Kosi chipping in according to the Age.

St Kilda won't have Hayes, Ball, Gram, Leigh Fisher, Maguire, Goddard or Schneider - Link (http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/gardiner-passes-test/2008/02/08/1202234170696.html)

Cry baby Riewoldt and Gehrig are both playing next week so who should we play on them?

No Thursty or McGuane must mean Silvester is guaranteed to play at FB with Sarge at CHB. My guess for the first NAB Cup game:

B.    King       Silvester    Bowden
HB: Morton     Schulz     McMahon
C:   Johnson   Newman    Jackson
HF:  Richo        Polak        Pettifer
F:    Brown      Deledio     Collard
R:  Simmonds   Foley      Tambling

Int (eight from): Cartledge, Riewoldt, Raines, Rance, Collins, Polo, Tuck, Patto, Hyde, Edwards, White, Casserly, JON, Tivs, Hughes

If the Foley groin injury rumour has any truth then he'll of course miss. Cogs won't play yet.

Well I have a bit of a different take on the side now. As we have no Thursfield and Mcquane and we are playing the saints with a few big fowards I think that Polak will have to play down back.

B.    King        Bowden   Polak
HB: Newman    Schulz     McMahon
C:   Johnson    Tuck     Jackson
HF:  Morton      Richo      Pettifer
F:    Brown      Deledio     Tambling
R:  Simmonds    Foley       Polo

My bench of 8    Riewoldt, Patterson, Edwards, Collard, Raines, JON, Tiv, Silvester

This was much harder than I thought. The next level of players down from the top bunch seems to be very even and there are a handfull of others that could be in the mix.

Richo not playing?
I got the feeling that the club was loking forward to having Richo and Browny back together with Lids deep.

True fluffy we might need to use Polak down back if the Saints rest either Gardiner or King up forward to stretch us for height. I think Silvester will take Gehrig and Schulz gets Riewoldt. I hope Terry doesn't force Rainesy onto to Riewoldt again  :-\.

I work at Collins St Docklands so I will be having some pre game drinks at the bar downstairs and then trundling off to the Dome. May end up being our only Friday night game all year so hopefully the Tiggers win and if not then I can make it count with a heavy drinking session. :thumbsup
