Title: Hafey as coach
Post by: mightytiges on August 06, 2004, 05:34:13 PM
Hafey was chatting to KB this morning about sacking coaches who are still contracted. Tommy is totally against breaking contracts. Anyway the topic moved onto his sacking by Collingwood and mentioned that after the 1981 Grand Final which Collingwood lost by 5 points  ;D there were rumblings at the Pies about him staying or getting the chop (which they finally did midway through the following year). Apparently Richmond hearing these rumblings at the end of season 1981 asked Tommy to come back to Tigerland but Tommy said no because he still was contracted to the Pies and a contract is a contract. What might have been for us if he knew he was about to get shafted by the Pies half a season later :'(.

Yes the start of many things we did wrong was getting rid of Tommy.

Agree RR. The story I've heard is the board voted at the end of 1976 for Tommy to stay but Graeme Richmond was against it. So without full support Tommy was gone.

Thats sad.....Who knows what the hell could of happened in the past 20  years......

Although my dad still tells me that the start of the end 'was hiring that idiot Francis Bourke, the guy who destroyed the team and its morale'. He still blames him for losing the 82 GF, he would have bet his house that w/ Malthouse we would have beaten them.
