In what has been several months of reflection by the Richmond board and senior staff, coach Terry Wallace will continue to adopt a lower profile next season to concentrate on coaching.
Richmond's dismal performance in 2007 prompted the change of focus for the media-savvy coach, who plans to spend more time on the training track and concentrate on building his relationship with the senior playing group.

... and concentrate on building his relationship with the senior playing group.
I had a double take when I read this. I like you Terry but if you don't have a relationship with your senior players then I think it is about time you did something about it. I assume it means building on his already strong and constructive relationship with the senior playing group.
Out of interest, who do we regard as senior players now. Is is just the Richo, Browny, Johnstons of the team or do we now include players like Lids and Foley? How old is senior?

Pressure is on.

The kitchens getting hotter and Wallace is getting the point.
Lots of things are falling into place.
-
No sign of Plough today at training but on Monday he would have a one-on-one chat with each player in the race as they came off. He told Foley it was great to see the No. 41 back running around for instance and he, Greg and Simmo were laughing away.
With the club back making consistent profits and having record membership, the need for Terry to be the media face of the club is no there anymore unlike when he first arrived. Miller and March have been doing publicity work.

Wallet has a lot of building to do with the senior group
-
The draw and the fact that the list is inexperienced time will most likely cost Wallace his job at the end of 2008, as I said in another post, If we as a club work to form then history will record that Wallace was the one who fixed the list, but it will be the next coach that gets the chocolates. Unless of course they hold firm and let Wallace go through until 2011-2012.
-
Pressure is on.
Absolutely and so it damn well should be.
Wallace would or at least should be under no false illusions about expectations this season.
He is paid big bucks to deliver results, not wooden spoons and draft picks. Any dud can do that.
-
something lost to the uninformed, and biased, is the fact that wallet has bent over and taken a big one up the arse for this club, and the benefits of him doing so will be evident for the next decade.
When wallet came in 2005, we were the most underesourced unprofessionally run club with the worst list in the afl, thanks to spud.
He has sacrificed his reputation and refused to take short cuts re-assembling the list and the coaching staff, add to that the fact that through his efforts in marketing the club have contributed significantly to the million dollar profits now being posted.
One thing for sure, if wallet is sacked after 2008, it is because he ran out of time doing things the right way, when he could have very easily taken short cuts and traded 1st round draft picks to save his ass.
The fact that he did this, knowing that if he failed, it menat his coaching career was over in the afl, and his personal brand destryed, makes it in my opinion, all the more meritorious.
Believe what you want about TW the person, but he has been the most unselfish and forward thinking, modern coach the tigers have had since Tommy Hafey, hopefully he gets to enjoy the fruits of his labour.
Getting CC to assist FJ, is a massive, massive get. The fact that there will be an extra 300k pumped into the football department to help develop the elite, elite I repeat elite young talent we now have on the list, is just as significant, I hope the biased and the naive, take this into account when judging his performance, because I can assure you the RFC will and does and will continue to do so.
Wallet is not my kind of bloke, not the kind of bloke I would want to have a beer with, notwithstanding this, I am very thankfull that he was strong enough to take the pain, until we got our poo together, ( thanks Stephen Wright)

I actually have no doubt that most of this is true. My father in law knows TW quite well through basket ball and speaks very highly of him as a person. I trust my father in laws judgement in this since the people he likes and respects are the people I also like and respect.
I just ignore the criticism of TW's character when I read it because I believe it not to be true. Whether he is a good coach is yet to be seen but I do not feel that he will fail through lack of effort or weakness of character.
Oh and I really wish people would stop calling him Wallet or Walla$e. >:( But I'll live if you think it is necessary. I hardly notice any more.

Who's Wallet?? A new conditioning coach or something??

I agree that he has done alot of good things and tried to go about it the right way, but my comments have always been based on what we have done in the past and the enormous pressure that will come during next season- this pressure has usually seen Richmond boards cave in to the Richmond hoardes.
In some ways I hope they let Wallace continue even if he has another bad season. In atleast 4 threads I have said that Wallace will probably go down in history as the bloke who fixed the list, but the next coach will get the chocolates- thats not a criticism of Wallace, just an opinion that I have that our board wont be able to sustain the pressure from the RFC supporters if things go bad in 2008.
My reference to the next coach getting the chocolates shows that I believe that we will probably win a flag during the next 4 or 5 years- so its not a slight on Wallace at all- it shows that I rate alot of the things he has done- not everything, but alot of things.
As for the elite talent Blaisee talked about in his post, sure we have some good young players but I feel that we need one more national draft to finish it properly. A couple of early picks next season will really finish the job.
-
The transition to a more professional and accountable era has begun. The winds of change has started to blow across Punt Rd and the bells are starting to toll for those that won't or don't want to conform to these new reforms. Lets hope these off field actions bear on field fruits sooner rather than later. We may be pleasantly surprised next year.

Agree Ramps. We've basically replaced our backline and midfield in 4 drafts with talented youngsters who are now playing senior footy and will grow as a unit together. The forward line is the last query - who are the replacements for Richo in particular as well as Browny? Jack and Cleve are still unknown quantities playing VFL footy.

You make me laugh.
If he wasnt employed at a football club, he wouldnt have a job, fact.
Dont know ANY senior management people who get $600,000 a year and turn around mid-way through a contract and admit to problems, like i need to spend more time with players on the track, I need to be working closely with the senior group, well hello Terry, should of been from DAY 1 . Its not that he hasnt coached before.. ::) ::) ::) ::)
Blaisee, you have been sucked in big time by the biggest crap merchant coach that has ever been. .
-
Out of all the youngsters only 3 or 4 look as though they could become elite, another 3 or 4 are maybes and the rest need to do lots of work. I havent included Cotchin, Rance or Putt in the numbers- hopefully they all come through. We need another really good draft next year.

We could try Gourdis for nada. PSD pick; nothing to lose, everything to gain.

3-4 elite players is all a team really needs.
The Pies don't have anyone i'd class as elite in their side.
-
i didnt say they were elite, i said they could become elite.

i didnt say they were elite, i said they could become elite.
I hope they do, I meant that if 3-4 did become elite, that's all we'd need, but also a strong support cast to help them out.
As Essendon have proven, you can have 3-4 elite players, but if the rest of the team totally suck, then you're always going to be mid range on the table.

Lets get a few things straight.
I left, not going to get paid peanuts to work your backside off, .
Would you work for nothing or very little ? dont think so..I walked very simple.!
As for being biased, wouldnt think so, just know what happens behind the scenes, and little surprise to me and many others that they won the spoon, good chance for back to back spoons.
As for forced retirement, already doing something next year!

Mark Thompson.
End of 2006 had to convince the Geelong board he was prepared to change to keep his job.
I would have thought realising you should maybe do things differently and acting on it is a good thing. No matter how long you've been doing it.
Good stuff, Plough. :)
-
best thing that could happen next year is a spoon finish with 4 wins and the priority pick. Picks 1 and 2 thanks and then a 3rd inside 20.

Good points FF & wayne.
I'm sure there are a few more that can be added to the list not just at AFL level but in other sports who have done it in the past and I reckon there maybe some who will do it in the future

agreed and then wallace can hand us those 2 picks and take a walk.
i dont like him. his attitude everything about him i dont like.
now can i just say one thing. if he was so interested in helping us get off the ground why is he only know starting to realise he needs to play youth week in week out. it was a different story when we finished 9th wasnt it. ill tell u what happened. we finished 9th and last year wallace thought we would have a good crack at top 8 hence signing kingsley. well guess what we finished last and then the whole list he adopted argument came through thick and fast. funny i never heard about it any other year. if he was half a descent couch he wouldve said this from the beginning.
i might be wrong but i think he is the first coach i have ever heard mention a previous coach and how bad the list was under them.
he better change because his coaching methods have been pathetic
he still hasnt instilled in these players how to tackle, look after your players and be fierce at the ball.
i wonder if a mick malthouse would accept some of the crap that our players put out every week.
am i peed off. ur damm right i am because i have accepted this crap for 25 years when i became a tiger man and to be honest nothing has changed in my time here, not one single thing. will i still be a tiger man. damm right till i die
we need a tough coach who accepts nothing but feirce competitiveness.
i hate the pies but when i watch them, inside of me admires them the way they go about their business. we need to be like them.
when we play interstate i feel like slapping 5000 bux on the opposition, thats how sure i am we wont win. we have no gutz, no-one looks out for each other.
draft picks yes it does help but in my opinion this is what needs to change at punt road. we r soft in everyones eyes

look mate i just love richmond like all u guys it annoys me big time how we cant get our poo together.
when it comes to wallace i wouldve had a lot more respect for him say if we finished on the bottom the first year or so then built up like that. but we finished 9th then we had this terrible year and then its all danny frawley's fault.
look i agree spud stuffed us around but wallace if he was worth what he gets paid, should've known this from the start not half way through his contract.

Firstly daniel I reckon history tells us at Richmond that all new coaches in their first year get improvement result wise. Players seem to have this seige mentality that "struth the coach has gone and I gonna be next so I better up the ante".
When he got the results he did in the first 2 years most thought he was a sensational coach. This year we get the spoon and suddenly he is a dud coach.
Personally I reckon it is the glass half full/half empty thing - depends which way you look at it.
look i agree spud stuffed us around but wallace if he was worth what he gets paid, should've known this from the start not half way through his contract.
I think he knew when he got there the mess the list was in because how many did he get rid of straight off the bat? 8 or 9 (read Moi's sign and it tells ya ;))? Then they turned over another 5 odd last year and another 6 this year. I reckon he has turned over the list and has been building from day 1. The fact that he hasn't played just kids is a good thing in the sense that some kids just aren't ready and should be given time to develop at the VFL.
It pains me to say it but look at the Hawks and the number of the kids on their list drafted over the last 2 years that haven't played yet and are being given time to develop and that's in part because they haven't needed to play them.
This year (2007) we had to play them which was great to see from my view but the pain was we lost games we should have won. Got told an interesting stat the other night we lost 8 games in 2007 by 24 points or less...

A similar result this year and he can take a walk.

We are 1 bottom finish away from having a very decent core of players. If things go to plan (my plan) we will finish bottom next year and get the first 2 picks and a 3rd inside 20. The situation isnt as bad as it seems especially if we can get early picks next year. Im looking at 6 new players in November 2008 and 3 new players in 2009 and again in 2010. Thats 12 new young players between now and 2010. We have 5 potential retirees and about 15 blokes who have plenty to prove. We need 1 star ruckman, 1 star inside mid and 1 star kp forward. If we can get 2 of those next year we will be in it up to eyeballs down the track.

With Naitanui, Rich, Hurley, Trengove, Hartlett and Yarran who all played in this year's U18 champs but are available in next year's draft, even a 12th or 13th placed finish should still see us pick up a top kid. I think the bombers might walk away with the spoon in 2008 ;).
-
Dont you reckon theyll try and lift for Knights as there new coach. I cant see them on the bottom. I doubt theyll make the 8- somewhere between 10th and 14th.

They've lost their best player and a fair bit of experience, their defence is iffy at best and Fletcher and Michael are another year older, and their midfield is one of the slowest in the league. If they didn't play home games at the smallish Dome they would have been fighting us for the spoon this year. Remember they were a umpire decision away from losing twice to us this year and we flogged them the second time around when they had everything to play for. Lloyd and Lucas may still have them kicking decent scores next year but going the other way is where I think they'll get burnt. If Lloyd gets injured it will be a long long year for the Dons IMO.
-
Depends how some of their young kids go, they have some quick kids but they are stil raw.
Hopefully we can belt them again :pray
