Title: Echuca to host Tigers
Post by: richmondrules on November 29, 2007, 07:14:37 AM
The Advertiser (Bendigo)

http://bendigo.yourguide.com.au/news/sport/general/echuca-to-host-tigers/1094874.html

RICHMOND is expected to head to Echuca in February next year for its annual AFL community camp.

The AFL is yet to officially announce the destinations of the 16 clubs for the community camps, but The Advertiser understands the Tigers are slated for Echuca.

February 5 to 7 is earmarked as the date of the three-day camp, which have been held since 2003.

For Richmond player Daniel Connors, the community camp will give him

the opportunity to return to his home town.

Connors, who was drafted to Richmond with selection 58 at last year's national draft, is originally from Echuca.

"It's a chance to get back to Echuca, which is good," Connors said yesterday.

"I don't get the chance to get back there too often, it's really only Christmas and spare weekends, so to be able to spend a few days up

there will be good."

Connors returned to Echuca last weekend following the drafting of his younger brother Eljay to St Kilda.

The selection of 17-year-old Eljay with pick 70 by the Saints was one of the surprises of the draft after the lightly-built wingman played just three games for the Bendigo Pioneers this year because of two collapsed lungs.

"I had heard a couple of clubs were interested in him because he had played a couple of good games before he got injured," Connors said.

"I knew he was always going to be on the radar, but I was surprised that he got picked up this year."

Connors is presently in his second pre-season training campaign with the Tigers, although he has been forced off the track since last Wednesday after suffering a foot hot spot, meaning he needs to wear a moon boot.

"I'll have another week in the boot, but hopefully, I will be back into training sooner rather than later," the 19-year-old said.

Connors was pleased with his debut season with the Tigers this year, breaking into the side for the round 17 game against the Sydney Swans and finishing the year with four AFL games.

Among his four AFL games was against premier Geelong at Skilled Stadium in round 18 when he amassed 25 possessions and was named in the best players.

"It was good to get my first game out of the way and play a couple more to see what it's all about," said Connors, who also played in Coburg's losing VFL grand final side to Geelong.

"Hopefully, next year I can be more consistent and try to play some more games."

Nice spot is Echuca  :thumbsup

I hope Connors has better luck than Browny and JON and the "hot-spot" doesn't become a "1-week" injury that reoccurs and he ends up lasting months on the sidelines  :-\.

We were told yesterday that a suitable ground in Echuca still hasn't been found to play on as yet. Let's hope we don't end up with injuries thanks to the ground being too hard  :-\.

Echuca just got 4 inches of rain - should soften the ground a bit!

I see where Kyabram had about 4" of rain the other night.  Only an hour down the road for the boys - wouldn't think ground hardness would be a problem there at the moment!  ::)

I agree MT - lovely spot.  Spent many, many weekends in my younger days camping and fishing at Torrumbarry.  Knock off work early on a Friday, travel and set up, line and stomach wet by mid arvo.  Memories.   :cheers

Good to hear about the rain. Lids and Petts can visit home in Kyabram.

Echuca football club's home ground is Victoria Park Oval, Crofton Street, Echuca

Seems even as a AFL club we've been kicked off Echuca's main oval (thanks to Ruprect from Y&B)

Quote from: Ruprect
They are actually training in Moama on the 2nd oval......there is a lot of cricket vs football politics going on and they aren't allowed on the main oval. I guess they are only an AFL CLUB the local cricket scene is way more important.

Richmond Tigers coach Terry Wallace was in town yesterday morning to inspect Moama's Jack Eddy Oval in preparation for his team's coming practice match.
The charismatic coach made a whirlwind visit to the area and, not leaving anything to chance for the pre-season practice match, the turf passed his test.

"I came up to make sure the ground surface was up to scratch," Wallace said.

"There is good grass cover, it's great. It is a fraction hard at the moment, but the curators are going to make sure they put plenty of water on it in the coming weeks.

"Players are fairly expensive commodities these days. We lost Troy Simmonds and Nathan Brown early last year and it just impacts your whole season."

The Tigers have been in full pre-season training but are yet to play a full-scale practice match.

"We have been doing practice sessions building up to our match play," Wallace said.

"In the past, we have had two practice matches in the lead-up (to the pre-season competition), but this time we are only having one because of the early start."

The match will be the Tigers' only hit-out before their NAB Cup match against St Kilda on February 15 and spectators can expect a solid display of competitive football.

Wallace said as it was his side's only hit-out, players would be fighting for positions.

"Obviously your key premium players will play regardless, but it will be nice and competitive," he said.

Wallace confirmed the likes of Matthew Richardson, Nathan Brown and Brett Deledio would take part.

Around eight district players will get the rare opportunity to take part in the practice match.

"We will be playing some locals in the game. It gives them the opportunity to have a look at what it takes to play at AFL level and adds interest," Wallace said.

"The main thing is to get in and put on a display for the locals and show where the club's heading and hopefully get through unscathed.

"The other aspect is that it will be a competitive game. We will pick two even sides. For example, we will have our best backline on our best forward line."

Echuca boy turned Tiger Daniel Connors will be part of the crew making the trip north.

The 19-year-old, who played four home-and-away games last season, had experienced some injury troubles in recent months, Wallace said.

"He had a stress sort of problem in his foot over the Christmas period, so he is a bit behind," he said.

"He will certainly be up here and certainly training. Whether or not he is ready for match play will depend on how he pulls up."

The Tigers squad and entourage of trainers and support staff will arrive in Echuca on Tuesday, February 5, as part of their three-day Echuca camp, which will include community appearances, training clinics, forums and functions as well as the practice match.

The practice match will be held at Jack Eddy Oval on Thursday, February 7, at 4pm.

Took poor old Spud 5 years to turn grey and become a shattered wreck. Terry's only just starting his 4th year and his hair is already receding  :o.

Connors isn't training (in rehab) so I can't see him playing.

Good to hear we'll be playing two even sides rather than a possibles vs probables game which is always one-sided and of no benefit.

It was mentioned in the article and Terry checked out the oval so I'd presume it's right fluffy. You could always ring the club to confirm for sure.

Coming to town: Terry Wallace and his Richmond Tigers start their three-day AFL Community Camp in Echuca-Moama tomorrow.

The Richmond Tigers will invade EchucaMoama tomorrow [Tuesday] as part of their three-day AFL Community Camp.

Tomorrow [Tuesday], after a civic reception at the shire's function centre in Echuca at 3pm, the Tigers will have a training session at Moama at 4pm.

That night they will attend a community function at Moama Bowling Club, which will include player and coach interviews and a Tigers memorabilia auction.

Richmond players will be seated among guests throughout the room.

All proceeds of the function will be distributed to junior football in the Echuca region.

On Wednesday, after an early-morning weights session at the Echuca YMCA and team breakfast, the Tigers will host a NAB Auskick Superclinic at Victoria Park.

Following the clinic, the Tigers will make various community appearances. Wednesday night will see the Tigers host three simultaneous community forums for coaches, administrators and medical personnel.

The forums are a unique opportunity for the AFL and Richmond Football Club to become more accessible to the community.

Each session runs for about two hours, providing the chance for club volunteers to gain knowledge on specific topics.

The coaching forum will be run by senior coach Terry Wallace, assistant coaches Brian Royal, David King and Craig McRae and fitness coach Matthew Hornsby.

The administration forum will feature football director Greg Miller and football operations manager Paul Armstrong.

The trainers' and first-aid forum will be presented by club doctor Greg Hickey and trainer Ian McIndoe.

On Thursday, players will visits schools in surrounding towns including Bunnaloo, Mathoura, Rochester, Leitchville and Gunbower.

The camp culminates on Thursday afternoon with a full-scale intra-club practice match at Jack Eddy Oval in Moama.

The game starts at 4pm and will feature Richmond's best, as well as a few lucky local players.

It's time to talk football
06 February 2008   Herald Sun

FOOTBALL'S hottest topics were laid bare for the community to dissect at last night's "Meet the Tigers" football panel in Echuca.

Herald Sun expert Garry Lyon and chief football writer Mike Sheahan, quizzed, teased and interrogated four Richmond stars.

New vice-captain Nathan Foley spoke about how he will overcome pesky taggers this year, while Chris Newman spoke of his rapid rise to joint vice-captain. Attacking star Nathan Brown revealed to the crowd of 250 his plans for this year, while Joel Bowden revealed where he would play in Richmond's new-look defence.

Lyon and Sheahan discussed Wayne Carey's rapid fall from grace and the ever-increasing media thirst for off-field controversies.

The inaugural panel at the Moama Bowling Club was part of Richmond's three-day community camp in Echuca.

Rainstorm dampens Tigers' camp but not desire
Martin Boulton, Echuca | February 6, 2008

AFTER a warm welcome, Richmond's community camp in Echuca hit a soggy patch yesterday when its training session in nearby Moama was washed out by torrential rain.

A dozen local footballers scheduled to have a run with the Tigers were invited back today, if they can get away from school, while the players were forced to collect their bags and file back onto the team bus.

Next stop, Echuca College, where Joel Bowden joked that the squad might be invited to other parts of Victoria where drought has bitten deep and water restrictions are in place.

Bowden's 13th pre-season has gone without a hitch and he said the three-day visit to Echuca is another valuable chance to bring the group closer together.

"We've been away a few places together and it's been a real development time, I've seen a number of guys in their early 20s really mature," he said.

As one of the senior players with eight or more years' experience, the 29-year-old was among those on a modified training program in November.

"It's been a little bit different, but after the whole group came together in December, we went on a camp that really changed things up, quite a bit more than usual."

The camp was run by Stealth Development, which, according to Bowden, was "handed the reins" by the Tigers' fitness staff. "We did a lot of running in the hills around the Dandenongs, then Anglesea, where it was all on the foreshore and beach tracks."

The final stage of the pre-Christmas camp was in the Grampians and abseiling formed a big part of the program. "It's interesting to put yourself in situations like that, where you're under pressure, (and) I saw a lot of good signs from a number of players."

The first tangible signs of that development is the club's restructured leadership group, with Nathan Foley and Chris Newman appointed vice-captains under skipper Kane Johnson.

The leadership group also includes Bowden, Nathan Brown, ruckman Troy Simmonds and Kayne Pettifer, who was elevated for the first time after seven seasons.

"Kayne's been showing the way the last three or four years, his work-rate is very high," Bowden said.

"He's been rewarded by being voted in by his peers and acknowledged by the coaching staff as being a worthy candidate and worthy member of the leadership group.

"It's good to have a bit of change, add some new, fresh faces and hopefully with Nathan and Chris being vice-captains shows the other guys around the place that it (leadership) is not far away."

With a new season looming, Bowden is confident the club can put last year's dismal winning record behind it and look forward.

"We're healthy and that's the main thing," he said. "If we can stay healthy and keep everyone going, we'll have a much better year and certainly develop as a group."

Tigers stars to play
Bendigo Advertiser
6th February

RICHMOND will have its final intra-club hit-out of the pre-season in Moama tomorrow before it opens its NAB Cup campaign against St Kilda at Telstra Dome next week.

Tomorrow’s intra-club match will be played as part of Richmond’s three-day community camp in Echuca-Moama and a big crowd is expected to watch the Tigers go through their paces.

The Tigers’ star players in Matthew Richardson, ex-Golden Square junior Nathan Brown, Kane Johnson and Mark Coughlan are all expected to play, along with former Bendigo Pioneer players Andrew Collins and Daniel Connors, who is originally from Echuca.

‘‘The majority of the list will be playing, and there will also be a few local guys from up that way who will be having a run as well,’’ Richmond football operations manager Paul Armstrong said yesterday.

‘‘We’ve had a couple of internal trials this pre-season and this will be our last one prior to the NAB Cup, so all the boys are keen to do well.’’ Richmond arrived in Echuca yesterday for the start of its community camp.

The Tigers received a civic reception at the Campaspe Shire Function Centre, before a training session at Moama.

The Moama Bowls Club last night hosted a community dinner for the Tigers.

Today, Richmond players will have a weights and rehab session at the Echuca Leisure Centre from 7.30 am, before taking part in a superclinic to be held at the Echuca football ground from 10 am.

This afternoon, coach Terry Wallace will speak at a business lunch, while the players will visit nursing homes, secondary schools and retirement villages between 1 pm and 3 pm, which will be followed tonight by coaches, medical and administration community forums.

Tomorrow, the players will visit schools during the morning, before rounding out their camp with the practice match at the Moama football ground, to start at 4 pm.

Shire of Campaspe mayor John Elborough welcomed Richmond to Echuca at yesterday’s civic reception. ’‘The players looked as though they were enthusiastic about their visit because they are giving something back to grassroots football, which is important,’’ Cr Elborough said.

‘‘The visit by Richmond has certainly created a real buzz around Echuca this week.’’

Tigers ready to roar
Bendigo Advertiser
February 7, 2008

RICHMOND legend Dale Weightman says the Tigers’ players won’t be holding anything back in today’s intra-club match at Moama.

Today’s hit-out, to be held at the Jack Eddy Oval, will be the Tigers’ last intra-club match before their first NAB Cup game against St Kilda at Telstra Dome next Friday night.

The intra-club match, expected to attract a large crowd, will end Richmond’s three-day community camp to Echuca and Moama.

‘‘We will probably only have one or two blokes who won’t play in this intra-club match … the guys are all vying for a spot to be in the first NAB Cup game against the Saints next week, so it will be a good hit-out’’ said Weightman, who now has a football development role with the Tigers.

‘‘It’s going to be full on; we’ve had two or three intra-club matches leading up, but we haven’t had all the players playing in the one game, so this one will be the big hit-out for them.’’

The intra-club match will be a full-scale four-quarter game to start at 4 pm.

‘‘It’s part of the preparation for when we play the Saints next Friday, so the players are going to be going hammer and tongs,’’ Weightman said.

‘‘The senior players want to have a good hit-out, and the young players who we have drafted are keen to push their cause and there are still some spots up for grabs next week.

‘‘Terry (Wallace, coach) has an idea of who he wants to play based on how they have been travelling, but there are couple of players on the borderline as to whether they get a game or not, so it’s going to be a good hit-out.’’

As for how the Tigers are approaching the NAB Cup, Weightman, a former Richmond captain, premiership player and dual best and fairest winner, said the aim was to go in all guns blazing against the Saints, who are in Ballarat this week for their community camp.

‘‘The first game will be full on, then you just work it out from there based on whether you win or lose,’’ Weightman said.

‘‘I know we treat the first game full on, and it’s handy if you keep winning because you continue to play on the better grounds against quality sides that will be trying to win as well and you don’t get shoved all around Australia.’’

Richmond finished on the bottom of the ladder last year, winning just three games and drawing one.

But Weightman believes the depth of the list has been strengthened, which bodes well for an improved season.

‘‘We have a fair few of the guys who have been in the system for four or five years now, and we can see them taking the next step to be more consistent,’’ Weightman said.

‘‘We still have a very young list, but we have a lot of depth, along with a bit more size and height, which we haven’t had for a while.’’

Richmond will open the 2008 season against Carlton at the MCG on Thursday, March 20, in the first of what will be 176 home and away matches to be played this year.

Fans get a kick out of clinic
Bendigo Advertiser
February 7, 2008

HUNDREDS of primary school students from Echuca and surrounding areas got the opportunity to learn the basic skills of football from some of the AFL’s biggest names yesterday.

Richmond hosted a super clinic at the Echuca football ground as part of its three-day community camp in Echuca and Moama, which ends today.

Among those who who passed on some pointers on kicking, marking, handballing and tackling during the 90-minute clinic were Matthew Richardson, Nathan Brown, Kane Johnson and Brett Deledio, who are all household AFL names.

‘‘We do a lot of community work and it’s always good to give a bit back and to see the smiles on the children’s faces and see just how much they love their footy in the country,’’ said Johnson, who has been the Tigers’ skipper since 2004.

‘‘It has been really good to get up to Echuca and to an area where a few of the boys like Brett Deledio and Kayne Pettifer are from.

‘‘It’s always good to get away as a group because it’s a bonding thing as well as getting out into the community.

‘‘Hopefully, it brings the group closer together and we then finish the week off with a good game and head back to Melbourne ready to go.’’

The Tigers will end their community camp today with an intra-club match at Moama’s Jack Eddy Oval at 4 pm.

‘‘This intra-club game is going to be used to get a few of the cobwebs out and get a bit of a run under our belt before our NAB Cup game against St Kilda next week,’’ Johnson said.

Good to see our goalkicking accuracy has improved  :P. 2.7 to 2.3 that quarter.

The best news is that last line. Let's hope it stays that way.

Well guys here is my humble acessment of the Intra Club Practice match at Echua. I say that becasue I am no expert in these things and I get to see very little live football so might be a crappy judge. I also found it very hard seeing everything that was going on from ground level yesterday. Another thing was that there was 24 players listed for each side and many of our better players might of played only a half a game so it was hard to judge who was the better players

Goods things

1 . NO IJURIES  that I saw anyway - this was the best thing to come out of the day
2.  Good crowd, free admission, great surface
3.  The team looks bigger and taller on the whole, we have many taller boys on the list.
4.  They went hard at it most of the time which was good to see.

MY best player are the ones I noticed the most doing good things. As I said before, lots of our top players didnt play anywhere near full games so you cant realy judge. Some of these guys I didnt expect to be in the best.   JON. Patto, King, Morton, Lids, Tuck

I loved Patto. I realy dont now what postion he has in the side but he will be a nightmare for opp coaches to matchup on because of his height and his motor, He just gets around the ground.

JON was good running out of defence and he hit his target mostly. He sometimes didnt take the first option and ends up running around in circles but he has the speed and look confident today.

King was his usaul self and although I generaly favour big players I just love the way this guy plays.

Morton got a couple of goals and looked like he has something. Will be interesting to see if he breaks into starting 22 in R1.

Tuck got a lots of the ball inside which was good.

Lids kidded three I think and show his class at times. He was on the lossing side and he wasnt playing agaist a top defender so again its hard to judge if this is the right move for him to FF.

There were other performance that were ok but these are my top 6 (hey who am I to judge)

Bad Things

1. Game Plan.  In that there didnt seem to be one. I know they are all tigers playing each other but I expected to see some sort of structure and didnt. Agian I will say I was at ground level and not sitting up looking down so it can be hard to see.

2. Skills.  Many a target missed again.

3. Players missing were   Tambling, Brown, Thursfield, McGuane, Cotchin, Graham, Myer. As far as I know that was all.

4. I dont see any of the players we drafted this year making a impact this year. Silvester did some good things so he might get a chance if we have injuries.

5. What I would of though was close to our best forward line setup for the season was in the black team and the were soundly beaten by nowhere near our best backline. I am talking of Richo, Pettifer, Polak, Deldio, Riewolt. It was very  windy so it was hard for these bigger guys but it was the same for both teams.

6. Simmo looked fit but his ruck timing seemed off. It could be a lack of actual contact practice and lets hope he get back to his best. He didnt play that much of the game.

6. We went to the huddle at 3/4 time of the white team (thas why you didnt get 3/4 time report). Before David King (coach of this team) arrived there was no talk at all. The just all stood there, no leader seemed to stand up in the group.

I had a good time seeing the boys but it was one of the strangest things where all these people watching and nobody realy cheering for anybody. All these car parked around a ground and not a single horn hooted ;).  I also discovered that somebody in my age bracket cant do text reports of a game (well some might but I text about once a month). Between changing glasses and looking a team sheets etc its just not for me. So sorry for the crappy reports.

Well "Go Tigers" is all I can say but I am not confident we can turn it around this season

Title: Brown sits out (Bendigo Advertiser)

Brown sits out
Bendigo Advertiser
February 8, 2008

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace’s self-confessed paranoia was the reason behind superstar Nathan Brown sitting out the Tigers’ intra-club match at Moama yesterday.

Brown was a notable omission from Richmond’s intra-club match at Jack Eddy Oval, but will play in the Tigers’ NAB Cup opener against St Kilda at the Telstra Dome next Friday night.

‘‘It was probably more my paranoia than anything else (as to why Brown didn’t play),’’ Wallace told The Advertiser after yesterday’s two-hour match.

‘‘With the circumstances of him over the past few years, I didn’t want to take any risks with him.

‘‘He will play next Friday night, so there’s no dramas with him, but it’s probably just the coach’s paranoia after a fairly average 18 months for him.

‘‘We assure our supporters he will be out there next Friday night, but it was just me as a coach thinking a game in the country versus a game at the Telstra Dome next week, so we will wait for the Telstra Dome.’’

Brown, a former Golden Square junior and Bendigo Pioneer, has been restricted to just 21 AFL games since breaking his leg in round 10 of the 2005 season.

Yesterday’s intra-club match was the final event of Richmond’s three-day community camp to Echuca and Moama and a massive crowd of about 2000 watched the Tigers go through their paces in the full-scale hit-out.

Among those to play well were Chris Newman, who provided plenty of dash off half-back and kicked a goal in the last quarter.

Key forward Cleve Hughes finished the match with four goals, three of which he kicked in the first term in a blistering start.

Rookie Clayton Collard was lively as a small forward and kicked three goals in the third term.

Brett Deledio showed in the third quarter why there is talk of him spending more time permanently in the forward line this season.

Deledio kicked three goals in the third term, including a superb left-foot snap from 40 m out that was one of the goals of the match.

for those interested...

A group of 10 players from the Echuca area were given the opportunity to also play in yesterday’s match, which was held as part of the Tigers’ community camp.

Liam Guinan (Echuca), Troy Muir (Echuca), John Foskett (Moama), Damien Dalziel (Echuca United), Nick Iorianni (Echuca United), Luke Dunham (Moama), Craig Frost (Echuca United), Duane Hueston (Echuca United), Thomas McKitterick (Echuca) and Chris Casey (Echuca) all played.

Dunham kicked a goal in the final quarter, while Frost found plenty of the ball in the midfield.

Great reporting Fluffy  :thumbsup :cheers  :bow. Once again thanks for the updates yesterday.

I remember going to the Learmonth intra-club game 2 years ago and yep it's a weird feeling watching footy with a crowd there more for a up-close look of AFL players than barracking.

Just a couple of questions...

Where did Morton play mostly?

How did Polo go?

How was Patto's kicking?

Just a couple of questions...

Where did Morton play mostly?

How did Polo go?

How was Patto's kicking?

Morton maily played HFF/FP and got a couple of goals for the white side.

Polo seemed fit and certianly was in the game, Just didnt do anything that made him standout to me.

With Patto only once did I see him kick and say , that was bad. The rest of the time it seemed ok to good. It was windy and many targets were missed by many players

Seems we've scratched the Morton on a HBF idea already  ???. Good news about Patto.
