Hawks want two flags by 2012

HAWTHORN is aiming to win two premierships by 2012. If that's not bucking the cliched goal of "taking it a season at a time", the Hawks want to recruit 50,000 members in the next five seasons, too.
Hawthorn informed its members of the plan, titled Five2Fifty, at the end of its AGM last Thursday in a presentation folder.
It followed president Jeff Kennett's announcement that future presidencies would be capped at six years. Kennett, who is starting his fourth year, said board members would finish after serving nine years.
The Hawks website reported the plan as being "ambitious" and the build-up to it had "required a fundamental change in the way football had been approached at Hawthorn through the past decade. It took tough decisions."

It's good to set goals but you would hope they would be realistic. 50,000 would be just about every hawks supporter in Melbourne. lol. What do they expect 60,000+ to every home game? Not many members buy a membership without intending on using it. Not even the scum get those sort of numbers consistently. Perhaps Hawks can sign up their cars, boats and houses along with their pets.
Personally, although I'd like to see our membership numbers soar, I am far more interested in the balance sheet and the profit and loss. If we are financially healthy then we will prosper whether we have 20, 30 or 40 thousand members. On field results will drive memberships up. Hopefully we are on the road to some success in that area.

Even in a year the Hawks finished up the ladder in the finals they only had the 10th highest home crowd (we were 6th averaging 5,000 per game more than Hawthorn). They might want to get more than 33k to their home games before wishfully thinking they can get 50k members ::). Even the Pies who can average 54k to their home games have just under 40k members.
As for winning 2 flags. Sheesh it's hard enough to win just one. Go ask St Kilda about thinking a flag over the past 5 years was just a formality. Yep with recruiting Dew and new this they are getting way ahead of themselves :wallywink.

Essendon with success in the last 25 years and being one of the privileged big 4 Melbourne clubs have not achieved 40,000.
Collingwood with one flag in 50 years and heavy support just on 40k.
Hawthorn want 50k in memberships and 2 flags by topping up thier list with blokes of the ilk of Dew Rioli and co.
The inferority complexes began before Christmas this year.
Is there a doctor in the house? We have a major case of tall poppy syndrome over here.

Yep HT74 just dreamland stuff.
They've now just put so much unnecessary pressure on themselves. What happens if they don't win 2 flags? Is it classed as failure? Does Geelong suddenly not exist? What happens if Buddy or Hodge do their knee in round 1 next year?
They are aso forgetting that they just got over the line against a injury-ravaged Adelaide in one final and then got pumped by the Roos in the other who themselves were smashed in their other finals.
There are too many variables in footy to make ridiculous claims like these and Hawthorn should know better about making them after 2001 and 2004.

HAWTHORN'S Jordan Lewis has declared the Hawks' premiership window open.
Lewis said the Hawks had five years to break through, supporting the plan unveiled to members last week that the club was aiming to win two flags by 2012.
"We think our window is now," Lewis said yesterday. "Between now and five years is where we have really got a good shot at it.
"We have got that finals experience now and we know what it takes to actually win finals games.

There right about the permiership window - theirs is open now. With a large percentage of players in the mid-age range and a few top up young players they need to make their run soon.
Unfortunately I don't believe they have the cattle all over the ground to achieve that goal. They have a good midfield and forwardline but the backline is still raw and lacking depth.
I think they will play finals over the next few years and finish off their window being smashed by an emerging Tigers outfit but ultimately their recruiting may come back to haunt them.

Whatever happens I'm just glad it's not us making grandiose predictions for a change. We all know what would happen if we made these sort of claims. Of course, not being Richmond, they will probably end up with 2 flags and 50,000 members. Can't help thinking Clarkson is about to learn an important lesson though.

hawks dont have enough talent yet to win a flag, its one of the reasons why id like us to stay at the bottom for one more season, i dont feel we have enough either.

Yeah in deals in conjuction with Land Rover Discovery and the Mt Hotham Chalet. :lol

These clubs should be concentrating on making what they have work for them not speculate about stuff they don't have. Member numbers are feel good figures. Yes they help the bottom line but you should be able to make the numbers you have work for you.
I seriously hope we don't hear a whole heap of crap at our AGM.

I think our AGM should be a low key affair. Sure the financial turnaround will be indicative in the figures released but other than the obvious we have no reason to gloat
Let other clubs make outlandish statements and hopefully we'll keep our mouths shut and let our actions speak.
