What are your expectations for Polak this year and what would be a good year for him?
-
I think that if Polak is allowed to settle down into a permanent field position he will fire ;)
-
I am expecting big things from Polak this year.
He will get another full pre-season under his belt and the confindence that he gained from last season should give him the drive to work hard and get himself fitter and bigger.
-
I think he will spend more time at CHF than CHB.
His defensive abilities to play man on man are still under question but he has a great set of mits.
We need to utilise that and he seems a better option up front than Hughes or Schulz at this point..

Agree Magic. Hopefully he's been working on his goalkicking if he does play mostly forward this year.
-
Hopefully he wont have to play in the ruck :P
I reckon he will be first choice CHB and 2nd choice CHF
-
for god sake let the guy settle in the one position.
in 07 they played him here there and everywhere
-
hopefully he can PUNCH the bloody ball in defence ... CHB Polak is and always should be ...

l agree but l hope rancedevelops quickly into the gun chb he should be then polak will probably be moved forward :thumbsup
-
Polak is not a permanent forward which was figured out very early cos he does not have the endurance to get to a contest (eg Jon Brown), nor does he have the depth of kicking distance to be a lead-up forward.
Granted can Graeme can take a grab - if he gets to the contest, but he will not make a sustainable AFL career if he is played as a loose man in defense.
Didn't hear Miller blowing GP 's trumpet after the latest tan run, did he finish 2nd last again ?
A query for the training watchers ... What are his skin folds ? Has he got rid of the puppy fat and added muscle definition ?
More questions than answers with GP.

We recruited him as a CHB, lets leave him there to make his mark on the competion
-
If Polak plays CHB then he needs to become accountable for his man and learn to know when to mark or spoil. He does not yet posses this skill.
Could Polak play CHF i do not know nor do i know if he has the tank.
Expect him to play about 70%in defence and 30% in attack.
:gotigers

There's rumours he didn't come back from the break in great shape. :(
We need a big year from this player. I hope he's fair dinkum..
-
unfortunately he will do a shocking knee in round 7

lol.
You paint the prettiest of pictures Oxymoron. ;D

Since posting the queries on Polak's condition, I have seen the unsubstantiated rumours regarding his body shape on his return.
Have any training watchers had an opportunity to see or further review Polak's current condition ?

If the club wasn't so secretive on training times and locations this year we'd be able to find out :-\.

Closed sessions MT ?
Or are they just not notifying the membership base of the training location ?
Or are they waiting to turn the 1st sod at Craigieburn ?
-

hes the best mark in the team and you want him at CHB to punch the ball all day???
CHF even FF is his best position. FF Polak is and always should be ...

two more genuine reasons why he should just have the ball plonked on his head at FULL FORWARD.

The latter two Darth. If you know where they are training you can go in and watch. The Club is just keeping mum. Today they had many of the parents watching in the grandstand. Maybe they didn't want to give off a bad impression by having too many feral supporters around :lol. Vic Park's surface ain't too good on the ankles either ::).

You'll be pleased blx. Rumour has it that Polly is playing FF this year ;).
-
Great.
Another FF who can't dob a gimme goal. :help
Marking is only half the package required to play out of the goal square.
I like Polak at CHF but work rate is the issue.
Not sure where he'll end up and he might even end up playing for Coburg a bit this year.
-
Only repeating the rumour I was told. Polak can take a good grab but needs to do it with an opponent right on his back if he wants to play FF all year. It would take some dramatic form slump for him to end up at Coburg though. According to someone here he was meant to end up playing for Coburg for most of last year :wallywink.

I just hope Polak doesn't get too comfortable down there after having something to prove last season MT.
He exceeded expectations in '07 but for us to improve he needs to continue to work hard and go up another cog.
Graham's a tremendous contested mark and reads the play well but I do wonder if he's quick enough on the lead to play out of FF and his accuracy in front of goal is very average.
Still he's likely looking a better bet than Schulz(disappoints me to say), Hughes or Riewoldt at this point.
Deledio's my preference as our main forward focus but is possibly still a season or two away from holding down a key forward role each week. I'd like to see him groomed for it in '08 just the same. Appears the club is heading that way.. :)
-
i think you will find he will play both fwd and back. mainly fwd though cos we are already preparing t0 play post richo.

yo madge, i dont understand, you infer he struggles kicking 6pointers close to goal but then you want to move him out further???
He's not a leading forward and he's not agile or fast enough to play CHF. He'd be the sort of FF you would leave 10-20 mtrs out from goal (in the red zone) and just put the ball on top of his head. Utilise his biggest strength, his marking. Place your crumbers at his feet and walah!!! PRESSURE on the opposition.
Did note in the photos on the training thread that he is indeed training with the forwards. My thoughts on Polak are purely based around having him play a position on hte field that will utilise his strengths. He's not an accountable backman and would rather him up front.
-
polak is a natural fwd and will play most his career up in front of the sticks
-
Everyone on the thread think he will be our shining light up forward. We recruited him as a CHB thats where I reckon he should play. Our backline sucks big time. Its where we lose most of our games. We need experienced big bodied MEN down back. If he is to be our next FF or CHF then lets get the backline in shape first. If the likes of Rance or Sylvester come along during the year then OK but until the backline can stop more goals than our forwards kick then leave him there.
-
we recruited for all his assetts. and last yr he filled a hole in defence, but that was last yr and this yr will be different
-

For some strange reason we want Gourdis to become a key defender too along with Rance.
Polak as yet hasn't proven himself marking and shutting down an opposition key forward as we played him as a loose man in defence even though we got him to play CHB. There's also the question of his kicking if he's played in the backline.
I blame our midfield for us leaking so many "easy" goals rather than our backline. The ball came down far to readily and without pressure. It didn't help we didn't have a top ruckman last year. We were totally smashed at stoppages.

Agree.
Hawthorn had a shrimp down back that was close to All-Australian. Their midfield and the pressure they applied to the opposition would have helped him out quite a lot.

Lol. :lol
I've been here too long. I like it. :thumbsup

Maybe.
I am far from convinced at this point than he's much more than a good contested mark. He is a poor set shot and they aren't usually FFwds (in good teams anyway).
As I said in a previous post I won't be surprised to see him dropped this year.
Obviously I hope he proves me wrong and kicks 70 goals for the year but I can't see it.
-
we shouldnt have to rely on solely him to kick the goals.
our midfield goals are non existent. sometimes i wonder they cant contribute like all other team's mid's
-
Yep you're right daniel. It's a major deficiency in our game. I guess when you never are on top in the midfield or around the stoppages, our midfielders are too busy going back or chasing tail to push forward to kick goals. I know yesterday was only a scratch match against ourselves so hardly decent opposition but at least there were good signs of mids kicking goals.

Travis Cloke board ;D

Sure not a great set shot but Cloke is the most promising natural CHF if I have seen since J Brown MT.
He could teach GP a thing or two about toughness and workrate.
It's a damn shame he's not a Tiger. :(
Cloke > Polak. Not much of a comparison.
-
That's a big call comparing Cloke to J Brown. At the same age Brown was a dual premiership player and Brown was always a much more reliable kick on goal. Cloke even makes Richo seem a dead-eye idiot and he's also averaging just 1 goal per game.
Agree though on workrate Magic but over a season that's a big difference between the Pies and us as a team not just Polak as much as I hate saying it. Ironically each year the game we do lift our workrate and toughness to the necessary level is against the Pies when we flog them. One of reasons I just don't rate Collingwood. Hardworkers but an average side that lacks class.
Back on Polak I'm interested in how he goes this year in his second year at Punt Rd. As with Simmo, Freo didn't know what to do with Polly and we know it took Simmo at least 12 months to get his body and fitness right after Freo stuffed him up.

Didn't say he was quite as good as Brown(the set shot kicking is a difference) but his stats at the same age are comparible. The dual premierships don't really mean a lot when you think about the personel in that Brisbane side.
I don't doubt Travis is an extremely bright prospect for the Pies. :(
If Polak wants to be a successful key forward then the likes of Brown, Richardson & even Cloke are where at he should at least aim to be even if he doesn't get there. If we are going to be a top side we'll need him to be the best he can.
Obviously I hope he gets somewhere near it.

Thanks to Damir gullibly believing the crap Collingwood was promising him for the second time in his life. This time that all 3 brothers playing together for the next decade. As soon as they got Travis it was bye bye Jason and Cameron. We told him the truth about only being really interested in Travis and so missed out :(.
Travis also doesn't have the intimidation factor Brown has but agree Magic his output last year is something we would love our young key forwards to deliver (minus the crap goalkicking). I guess the only positive is Cloke plays for an overrated average side.

from the Age...
In his second year at the club, Graham Polak said the sight of a fully fit Simmonds, Nathan Brown and Mark Coughlan had been an enormous morale boost for everybody at the club.
"It really picks up our training levels to see them all working hard … we missed them last year and to have them back fresh will give us a lot of drive," he said.
Crossing from Fremantle after a disappointing 2006, Polak (No. 4 pick in 2001 draft) resurrected his career with 22 matches in defence last year.
"It's one of my goals again this year to play every game," he said.
