I have just gone and checked my thermoter and it is reading 46 degrees in the shade.
And during the other months it has the same reading as the news shows.
But bring in Summer and all of a sudden it is different readings.
So way up here in the northwest we have it really hot.
And the news may show that it was 42 but you will all know this is wrong.
Why you ask, well we need pickers and who in their right mind would pick in that so a little fudging of the numbers to get them here is called okay.
They have been doing it for years so why would they change and show the true readings now.
-
Thank gawd for Air conditioning
Got 1 crappo 1 in lounge - flat tin roof house and just a ceiling fan in room which blows the heat around.
Keep meaning to get 1, them's the breaks
Got a pool tho - hope I dont drown while I sleep ! ... Dont worry dudes I wont sleep there 'inset sweaty emoticon here'
-
Yeah doesn't really reflect the states temps Mel, being on the bay and all. Even tho it got pretty hot today.

My girls are inside but they're soooo hot. We have airconditioning in one room, and do you think I can get them to go in there. No, they follow me around wherever I go. So to get them in the room last night, I slept there, just so they'd go in there. Was nice for me as well, but I don't like aircon generally and usually just put up with the heat. But this is ridiculous, so it was nice and my dogs cooled down fractionally. But hot again today and we'll go through the same process again.
I swore about an hour ago it was a few degrees cooler when the wind picked up. But now it's died down it's back to being hot again :banghead

Officially record high temperatures for Melbourne.
So much for a cool change too. Tomorrow is still going to be 37 :P.

Huge power outage hits Victoria; Thousands without electricity
January 30, 2009 06:53pm UPDATE 8.01pm:
A MASSIVE power outage has struck Victoria, leaving hundreds of thousands in the dark and plunging trains into chaos.
In addition to lines closed earlier today, Connex has now suspended services on the Upfield line.
Power failures between Flinders St and Richmond, and between Southern Cross and North Melbourne, have caused massive delays.
Passengers at Flinders St station are facing delays of up to 45 minutes.
Ryan Auger of CitiPower said initial estimates indicate at least 235,000 of the company's customers were affected when the system shed 1000 megawatts of power at around 6.30pm.
Auger said it was "probably the most significant load-shedding the state has ever seen".

-
Say a prayer for all the CFA and SES people fighting the fires all over Victoria. One of my cousins lives in Upper Ferntree Gully and she said the fire there was only 5 minutes away from her place :(.
-
Feel for the animals dude.
We lost a mother and baby ringtail in the first one and another today :'(
Stuff water restrictions I have chucked the sprinkler on a couple of times and the animals have loved it.
-
Well all you Melbourneites get ready for our dust cause it is bloody dusty here now and still bloddy hot. So get ready cause it coming towards you and I say by about 11pm you should get it.
-

Yep we're in the SE suburbs and it's reached here.
They are saying 14 confirmed dead and it could reach as much as 40 dead as there are areas the emergency services can't get into. The fire from Kinglake to Wallan is massive. I know people want to save their homes, property and livestock but you'd think in future when they know days like this are coming they'd force people to get out early.
-
That was a day straight from hell yesterday.
The smoke clouds from the Yarra Valley fires were drifting over our place, first time junior had seen something like that. His comment 'looks evil' and it does if you have ever seen it.
I remembered ash Wednesday when there were embers dropping from the sky, spooky time and was starting to get a bit worried there for a while. The wind was really howling through at times.
Let's hope we get some rain.
-
I remember the sun turning red from the smoke during the Ash Wednesday bushfires. Some overseas news reports back in '83 had the whole of Victoria on fire. Mount Macedon 12 months after the fire was still just black all over the ground for all the eye could see with black and grey sticks sticking out of the ground of what was left of the trees. From the footage on the news last night this will be no different especially if the death toll and property loss rises by as much as they are dreading :(. They are already calling it Black Saturday.
-
I hope everyone is safe. What a horrible day it was. The fire knocked out a communications tower in gippsland so all tv stations except ch 10 are not working and there is no coverage of it on there. So mad at them that I rang them last night and told them to pull their finger out
Thank god for ABC radio

Thank god its cooler today and a little rain this morning. I know it wont make much difference but its better than another day like yesterday. Unfortunatly MT they cant force anyone to evacuate. I was in the SES for a while and we were supporting the firies at Mount Martha as well as helping evacuate people but all we could do was suggest people leave, you cant actually make them.
-
Yeah I realise the SES and CFA now can't but when you hear now 65 confirmed dead with many more still missing most likely lying dead in the burnt out shells of their homes because they stayed to try and save their house and property it's just a tragic waste of life. Total towns like Marysville, Kinglake and others wiped off the map :'(.
There are lessons to be learnt from every tragedy even one as horrific and devestating as this one. There's nothing we can do about natural bushfires occurring (although firebug scum started most of these and continue to light more >:( ) but when we know a day like Saturday is coming as we did then surely it would make sense to get people out of fire prone areas the night before. It may be most of the time overkill but it's better than have towns of people all dead :'(.
-
We watched the smoke from the fires at Yarra Glen and Mt Ev from our back porch last night. My hubby asked what would we do stay or go. I said definitely go, a house can be rebuilt, I wouldnt think twice about it, especially if we had the kids with us.
-
Ch 9 just reported that former newsreader Brian Naylor could be one of the dead too.
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,25024407-661,00.html
-
Fire doesn't discriminate. Brian was a friend of my dad years ago when they both worked in radio together. Nice man :-(
-
It is just so hard to comprehend the distruction in such a short space of time
You're spot on Moi - the fires don't discriminate

I agree with you MT sorry if that came off as heartless it wasnt meant to. IMO once a state of emergency has been declared the appropriate authorities should have the power to make people leave for their own safety, sure they may loose there homes and personal items but you can stat again if your still alive, Dead is dead there is no starting again.
I got a txt message from a mate 1/2 hour ago saying his kids hadnt come back from theie mothers (in Traralgon) what should he do???. I told him as long as they are safe to leave them there and try to enjoy a quiet night. Missing a day or so from school isnt going to hurt them.
-
76 confirmed dead and when you look on the map how far the fires stretch especially the Kilmore-Kinglake-Marysville ones it's covering an area the size of most of Melbourne suburbia :o. Just mindnumbing.
Fire doesn't discriminate. Brian was a friend of my dad years ago when they both worked in radio together. Nice man :-(
And IIRC it was also only six months ago that the son was killed in a plane accident and now the mum's been found dead and Brian the father is missing presumed dead :(.
-
Just confirmed in Sky News 84 dead including Brian Naylor and his wife Moiree.
RIP Brian and all the victims as fire does not dicriminate and all life is valuable and important. :'(
I fear the toll could go 150-200 with so many people still unnaccounted. :'(
-

No not heartless at all Jacosh. You would know far more than me what happens in these emergency situations having been in the SES. Pure courage and selflessness are the SES/CFA folk. Right advice too for your mate. Right now personal safety comes first.
-
This all is sad news for everyone.
-
Yep your heart and condolences goes out to all those who have lost family, friends and neighbours as well as those who have lost everything :'(.
As for the lowlife firebug scum who started it all they should be charged with mass murder on par with a terrorist act >:(.

96 now dead :(.
-
when I gave plasma today they told me some will be going to help out those in need as a result of the fires
come on you OERites pop into your local Red Cross and make a practical difference it only takes 15 mins for blood and about 45 mins for plasma :thumbsup

Last I heard they asked people to stop coming but to come back in two weeks as they had snuff supplies for now

131 now confirmed dead and Ch 7 said authorities are estimating it will rise to 200 :'(. Just found out a workmate of my dad's is one of them :(.
Some amazing first account stories of survival though like the one in the Australian today:

-
It has been a hard couple of days.
Must admit I am finding this all a bit too much.
-
while i feel terribly for all those that have lost homes and love ones i need to spread some good news as well. My mates kids are home safe and sound after 21 hours of him being worried sick and not being able to contact them. :pray :clapping
-
Glad to hear they are safe Jacosh.
173 now confirmed dead. Makes you wonder how these communities will ever recover after losing so many people let alone all the property and animal loses :'(.
On a future looking note they were discussing fireproof cellars/bunkers as a safety measure in fire prone areas. Sounds like a good idea to me. The set-up cost may be expensive but it pales into insignifance when compared to this disaster and loss of so many lives.
-

Yep, I reckon redirect the insulation part of the stimulus package into free cellars/bunkers for fire prone areas.
Keep the brickies/builders employed plus helps get money into the ravaged communities.

Yep and/or redirect part of the handout towards towards rebuilding these ravaged communities. 12 million people entitled to this handout (?) x $200 is about a quarter of a billion dollars just there depending on how much they will need. Most of the rest of the Aussie population would still get $750 each to pump into the general economy.
The sad fact is part of economy in this devastated region is tourism as it is one of the most picturesque parts of Victoria. It's going to take years for Nature to regenerate back to what it was.

Does anyone know if there's a bad fire up in Belgrave
My daughter is getting out of there, but I don't know if it's bad or she's just be cautious
Anyone?
-
URGENT fire threat messages have been issued for several towns in the Dandenong Ranges.
The CFA said residents at Kallista, Ferny Creek, Sherbrooke, Tecoma and Belgrave could find their properties attacked by wind-borne embers.
The blaze started at Belgrave and is being battled by two water-bombing helicopters.
The five-hectare fire is burning north through the park from a point neat Terrys Avenue and Sandells Road at Tecoma, a Country Fire Authority spokesman said.
Meanwhile, firefighters are building two containment lines between the blaze burning out of control near Alexandra, with the fallback line at Lake Eildon about 20km east.
Fire crews from the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Country Fire Authority are allowing the fire, part of the Kilmore-Murrindindi Complex, burn up to the containment lines.
The blaze has a 30km front and will reach its first major containment line about 10km from Lake Eildon.
If it manages to jump that, a second containment line is being bulldozed near Lake Eildon.

By late Sunday afternoon the fire had burnt down to Blue Ridge Rd in the Rubicon Valley, about 10km from Alexandra.
Much of the area is shrouded in smoke.
The northeastern Victorian town is not under threat as the fire is heading slowly east with virtually no wind to fan flare-ups.
Although the fire jumped a containment line behind the Buxton Trout Farm on Sunday afternoon, it was quickly brought under control.
If the blaze continue past Eildon, it will reach terrain that was burned in the 2006-07 alpine fires, which is expected to slow it down even further.
Milder weather, with temperatures around 30 degrees accompanied by relatively high humidity, has eased the fire activity.
The football ground at Alexandra has been transformed into a tent city to house almost 560 firefighters working in shifts.

It makes you wonder if this Belgrave fire is another deliberately lit >:(. We haven't had any known lightning strikes and the temperature is mild.
-
Foxtel just said it's under control
My daughter got out just in case and is okay.
Yep, makes you wonder doesn't it
There's some sad creatures out there and I hope they send a message to anyone who is found guilty of these crimes :banghead
-
Yer like chop their hands off then lets see them start another bloody fire. I hate them all that do this just to get their kicks out of it.
-
Glad to hear your daughter is safe Moi. Yep they said tonight the Belgrave fire was deliberately lit >:(.
How about the mum with 8 kids and one of the way being an arsonist and would light fires in the bush in front of her kids :help. Even her own kids gave evidence against her in court. All she got was 2 years ???.
-
She deserved to get more than she did. 20 year would have been more fitting.
-
THE man accused of lighting a bushfire that killed 11 people has made an insurance claim for fire damage.
Brendan James Sokaluk, 39, lodged the claim with the RACV a day after fires ravaged Victoria.
His website lists candles and thunderstorms as turn-ons.

That is just sick :banghead

Take his claim to him stuff it down his shirt and light the bloody thing.
-
They need a arson offenders list with the police like they do with sex offenders so these psychos can't join the CFA or live as 'sleepers' within rural communities. Just plain sick and scarey especially if the penalty is just 2 years :banghead :help.

I thought under the new laws bought in, in 1998 that the penalty for arson causing death is now 25years

I thought under the new laws bought in, in 1998 that the penalty for arson causing death is now 25years
The problem with that law is has to be 'arson causing death' not just plain arson. If no one dies (which is just plain lucky when it comes to bushfires) then the sentences are light because it's hard in court to prove the intent of the arsonist was to kill people. It should be if someone commits arson then it's classed at least as attempted murder. The laws are too soft on arson.
According to the the Australian Institute of Criminology, half of all vegetation fires -- between 20,000 to 30,000 fires each year -- are deliberately lit.
Between 2001 and 2006, 276 people were sentenced in Victoria for all forms of arson and only a third went to jail.
The average sentence was between two and three years.

Hold on to your hats as the wind is picking up and that is the worse news for the fires and the firefighters.
We have got dust storms here again and these winds are heading that way.
I hope it dies out before reaching there.
-
My daughter got caught up in them again this arvo >:(
The school where she teaches got water bombed and they were held up there for a while, copping embers and pretty scary
But I guess it was the best place to be at a school on the mountain because they had protection from cops and the fire crews.
There's some creep up there doing these and I'm so glad there was hardly a wind up there this arvo because it could have been a different story
Just got home after being up there trying to find her.
They evacuated to the Knox Netball Centre and I found her there :thumbsup

Too right, they wouldn't want to meet me at the moment :-(
Thanks MT :thumbsup
-
I agree that if you are in the area to look after yourselves. And always remeber that a house or Home can be rebuilt but to lose a member here can't be repladed.
And to the sicko's that light these fire's I honestly would just take them to the back of the cop shop and shoot them.
Why should we pay out money to defend these A -hole's.
I know this will not be allowed but then I would take out 25% of their wages each week for the rest of their horrible live and this even means when they are a pensioner or decide to go on the dole. Make them pay for the rest of their lives. So they have an ever lasting reminder of what they have done.
Just take care and know the rest of Victoria is with fingers crossed that it eads quickly. From the North West of the state.
-
A trainer at training today told us he knows someone who lost 9 family members :(. It's just something the rest of us can't comprehend.
-

And if it was deliberately lit, you could totally understand them wanting to do unthinkable things to the animal :'(
-
You better believe it. I think even shooting is too easy for moron's that do that.
Strip them off and then paper cut them until they stop crying, then start again and again and again. You get the picture.
I think that would be a good one.

Personally, I'd take them out to their own fire and just drop them in the middle of it.... and leave them there...
-
Paper cuts hurt like hell and doing all over the body will hurt even more.
Just imagine doing it between the fingers and toes and other sensitive area's.
And this would last a lot longer to.
Make them suffer like the ones that have lost lives and belongings.

Fingers crossed 2day :pray

We have 41 today supposably. So lets hope it is cooler moving closer to the coast.
I wish you all well in those area's of danger.

Take care on Tuesday to everyone who either lives or has family members who live in fire prone areas. The forecast is for high temperatures and strong northerly winds before a cool change and strong southerly winds. Get out early if you think it's best. They are saying the conditions could be close to a repeat of Feb 7 :help :(.
