Carey arrested over police assault

AFL legend Wayne Carey was arrested last night over allegedly assaulting police.
Police used capsicum spray on the former Kangaroos champion and handcuffed him after an incident at his Port Melbourne home.
Police spokesman Sen-Constable Wayne Wilson said a brief of evidence would be prepared in relation to allegations of assault of police. He said the matter involved two officers.
Police sources said Carey called police to the apartment he shares with girlfriend Kate Neilson just after 8pm.
He allegedly wanted Ms Neilson removed from the apartment, but when five police cars arrived he refused to let any officers inside.
Carey then allegedly assaulted police when they tried to enter the apartment, and resisted arrest.
Police used the spray to subdue him before handcuffing him.
Paramedics were called to the foyer of the complex to treat Carey, as is standard police practice when capsicum spray has been used.
Police took him to St Kilda police station about 8.30pm.
Witnesses said Ms Neilson left the apartment with police shortly before 9pm.
Carey was released by police before 10.30 last night, and went home.
A neighbour, who arrived home at the same time as Carey was being questioned by police, said the former footballer appeared confused and heavily affected by the capsicum spray.
"I came in to the lobby and I saw Wayne sitting in handcuffs," the witness said.
"He looked a bit agitated. His face was bright red. The paramedics were looking into his eyes and seemed to be checking him out.
Wayne was very quiet. He wasn't saying much."
The neighbour said he often saw Ms Neilson and Carey in the apartment block, which is one of Port Melbourne's most exclusive addresses.
Body: They kept to themselves and there was never any trouble, the neighbour said.
Another neighbour said she had seen the commotion.
"There seemed to be a lot of police around but Wayne seemed pretty calm," she said, adding "it was much ado about nothing".
A couple who live opposite Carey's apartment building watched from their balcony as the fracas wound down.
The man and woman, who did not want to be named, also said Carey had seemed subdued.
"They had him handcuffed and there was a woman, too, that they took away in a police car," he said.
"It all seemed pretty calm by that time."

FOOTBALL identity Wayne Carey was last night believed to have been hit with capsicum spray and arrested after an incident at his Port Melbourne apartment.
Police would not confirm they had taken Carey into custody, but a neighbour said: "It was Wayne all right. Look, I'm not gonna give too much away, but Wayne was in handcuffs and had been maced."

Wayne Carey could face charges

Police are considering whether to lay charges against former AFL footballer Wayne Carey after a domestic dispute at his Port Melbourne apartment.
The Seven Network tonight aired what it described as exclusive security footage from Carey's apartment building.
The footage showed Carey, dressed in a blue t-shirt and jeans, being led into a lift and then out of the foyer by two police officers.
Carey appeared red-faced and, in one portion of the footage, was having water poured over his face.
But the Nine Network said police were investigating how the footage was obtained.
A security guard offered Nine the same footage for $20,000 but the network did not buy it because it was feared the images were stolen, Nine reporter Tony Jones said tonight.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police denied such an investigation had been launched.

FALLEN AFL legend Wayne Carey could face jail in the United States if convicted over a wild clash with his girlfriend and Miami police.
Just 48 hours after police used capsicum spray on Carey and handcuffed him at his Port Melbourne apartment, the Herald Sun has learned he is already facing serious charges in Miami.
Carey was arrested and charged by Miami police during a holiday with girlfriend Kate Neilson last October.
Ms Neilson allegedly told police the former football great smashed a wine glass on her face, cutting her mouth and neck.
If convicted of third degree felony charges in Florida, penalties include up to five years' jail, five years' probation and a $US5000 fine.
Police were called to the five-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel about midnight on October 27. They found Carey, 36, asleep in his room.
Official police reports say that when they woke him he appeared drunk and lashed out, kicking one officer in the mouth and elbowing another in the face.
He was taken to Dade County jail where he was charged with assaulting a public servant, resisting an officer with violence and aggravated battery. He is due to face the Miami-Dade County Court on February 15.
Miami police spokesman Napier Velazquez said Carey was required to be in court to answer the charges.
"The charges are considered very serious," Mr Velazquez said. "That's all I can say about the incident."
The incident report, as seen by the Herald Sun, details Carey's arrest, his alleged assault on Neilson and the alleged attack on two police officers.
Miami police officer Daniel Rodriguez said in a statement that Carey had yelled obscenities at him and fellow officer Camilo Hernandez before lashing out at the pair.
Officer Rodriguez's statement read that he explained to the AFL legend that police were there because of the incident with his girlfriend.
"At this point he became aggressive, jumped out of bed and became confrontational towards these officers.
"Officer Camilo attempted to grab the defendant at which time he fell back on to the bed and kick (sic) this officer with his right leg on my lower left lip area.
"I attempted to place the defendant into custody and which in the process, the defendant elbowed officer Camilo on the face."
Carey was described by police as violent, loud and angry.

Wayne Carey is a complete waste of space.
In some ways you have to feel sorry for him. He was allowed to get away with the unacceptable behaviour when he was playing AFL and treated like a hero regardless. He never learnt because he didn't have to. Footballs Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up. Now he's completely stuffing himself. You have to wonder about his family also, what a wonderful bunch they must be, assault here, assault there. It would really be quite something to know them in private life. NOT!

The thing is it's not so uncommon now when you think of Carey, Cousins, Ablett and then there's Mainwaring and Millane. And they're just the ones whose self-inflicted problems have been made public.
It's a worrying trend. Lots and lots of money floating around the AFL and it is those without the required maturity who have access to it. They are treated like heroes and want for nothing and they just can't cope. Shows how important Jeff Bond is. Well done to the RFC for taking the young (and old) players welfare seriously.
Wayne isn't smart enough to deal with the lifestyle he has access to.

It looks like another case of a sports person being wrapped up in cotton wool and not being responsible for their own actions for so long. And in his case he thought that it would last but now he's in the real world and had to be responsible and he can't handle it. So I think its time that all types of sports look at way to make their money winners inteact with real people. And stop hiding them from things they do wrong. Spoilt little brats and this even goes all the way back to Gary Abblet Sr.

Seems our runner was present at a party held by Carey on Sunday although he had left well before the arrest.
Today Tonight reported last night that Stingers actor Kate Kendall and her husband, former Carlton football great Wayne "The Dominator" Johnston, were invited guests at a party Carey hosted on Sunday.
Kendall's manager said they had left the party long before police were called.
A source close to police repeated details of the party to The Age. The source said a high-profile horse trainer and a former VFL footballer who is a known associate of murdered drug dealer Jason Moran, were also present.

Bounty hunter sends warning to Carey

AN AMERICAN bounty hunter has warned fallen football hero Wayne Carey to turn up for his American trial or he will find him.
Bail bondsman Joe Mastrapa says the former Kangaroos player has to show up to Miami to answer charges of assaulting his girlfriend and a police officer next month, otherwise he and his colleagues will come after him to recover their lost bail money.
One of Mastrapa's colleagues posted $36,000 bail for Carey to be released from a Miami prison after he was arrested in October while on holiday with girlfriend Kate Neilson.
"You can run but you can't hide," Mr Mastrapa told Channel Seven last night. "The bounty hunter is empowered. It has the right of arrest without having a warrant to break and enter at a defendant's hideout or home and to arrest them and bring them back to justice."

POLICE found $9000 in cash on footy great Wayne Carey after his latest dramatic arrest.
The former AFL superstar was storing the cash in a bag when he was detained during wild scenes at his luxury Port Melbourne apartment on Sunday night.
It is believed he told officers he won the money on the punt and regularly carried large sums of cash.
A former Kangaroo teammate said yesterday Carey was always destined for trouble.
He said the first sign of trouble came when the 17-year-old joined the team for a 1988 trip to Perth and ended up locked up by police for fighting.
"That was the first night we'd ever met him. That was before he'd even played under-19s. Before he'd even put on a North Melbourne guernsey, we were covering his a---," the player said.
He said Carey had always enjoyed the company of people who would lead him to trouble.
"He's always surrounded himself with f---heads."

FALLEN footy great Wayne Carey spent time in a Las Vegas lock-up over a further alleged outburst of violence, it has emerged.
A citizen's arrest landed the disgraced star in custody in the US gambling city in October 2004, authorities revealed yesterday.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that underworld boss Jason Moran once threatened to kill Carey after he grabbed his girlfriend's breast.
The incident happened in the mid-1990s when the footballer was drinking in a Melbourne bar frequented by underworld figures.
When Carey performed his offensive party trick - which on a later occasion landed him in court on indecent assault charges - a furious Moran told him: "Do that again, and I'll kill you."
Moran, who was later gunned down by crime rivals, became close mates with Carey.
Judy Moran, matriarch of the Morans, said Carey and former Carlton star Wayne Johnston, who was at Carey's now notorious Sunday night party (but left early), had spent time around her family's table.

WAYNE Carey shoved and punched a security guard at a Las Vegas casino during a violent brawl almost four years ago, a US police report alleged.
The report claimed Carey assaulted the security guard at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in October 2004 as he was trying to evict the disgraced former footy star and two male friends.

Wayne Carey confesses he has drug and booze problems

DISGRACED former footballer Wayne Carey has admitted he has a drug problem.
He has revealed he abuses cocaine and needs help to control his drug and alcohol use after he "hit rock bottom". His girlfriend, Kate Neilson, has also admitted to using drugs.
"We realise when we do drugs we're as silly as one another," Carey said.
"If we are to go forward together, we have to make those important changes.
"I really think I had to hit rock bottom, which I have now, before I was forced to make these changes."
Carey and Miss Neilson have made the startling revelations in a joint interview with New Idea magazine.
They are believed to have been paid about $180,000 for the tell-all, which will be released early this week.
They are believed to be ready to seek help for their problems.
The troubled couple posed for loving pictures and spoke of their tumultuous and fiery relationship to the magazine in an interview conducted in secret in Melbourne, soon after they returned from a holiday in Thailand.
The couple, who do not live together, were seen leaving Neilson's home in Port Melbourne on Thursday.
Their tell-all comes after reports of numerous clashes between the pair.
In January, Carey was subdued with capsicum spray and escorted by police from his luxury Port Melbourne penthouse after officers responded to a call from the fallen champion to have Miss Neilson and her flatmate, Sabella Sugar, removed from his home.
When police arrived, he allegedly lashed out at the officers, who sprayed and handcuffed him.
In October, Carey was arrested at a Miami hotel after he allegedly smashed a wine glass in Miss Neilson's face.
Miss Neilson has since claimed the incident was sparked by a "simple misunderstanding". Carey has pleaded not guilty to attacking two police officers at the hotel after the incident between himself and Neilson and is due to face a Miami court on the charges next month.
In October, 2006, Carey allegedly hit himself over the head with a champagne bottle and wrestled with a security guard after an alleged domestic dispute with Miss Neilson in a New York hotel room. A security guard alleged he saw Carey "smacking" Miss Neilson in their room at the W Hotel and tried to intervene.
Also in late 2006, Miss Neilson ran into an African wildlife reserve full of lions and leopards after a row with Carey while the pair were on holidays.
In October, 2004, Carey allegedly shoved and punched a security guard at a Las Vegas casino during a brawl. He was held in custody overnight after the alleged incident.
Despite their public stoushes, Miss Neilson has stayed with Carey.
She professed her love for him on her MySpace page last year.

Nah all I was implying is I doubt he would have come out publicly unless the big bucks were on the table. He's morally bankrupt so I doubt any club would want him around their club. Geelong's different as they got a superstar son and the father didn't carry on with his teammate's wife in the bathroom of another teammate :whistle.

Well Tigermonk here's my reply to you. She was just some chick, she was his girlfriend. So he should have more respect for her. But if some women came up to me that I didn't know and slapped me in the face , she would be on the ground right there and then. But to do it to the one that you love is so gutless. That is my point to it as she was not a nobody she was and maybe still is his girlfriend. And like it was stated to do it with a glass. I rest me case on that part.

He's ability to remember some incidents in detail while totally off his face yet can't remember other incidents at all is convenient and hard to believe. The poor bloke had a hard childhood. Lets all blame our wrong doings on our childhood. I know for one I have a crappy one and with a drunkared father who was a wife bashing a-hole, treated me like I wasn't there. And I got over it and don't blame them and I think I have turned out okay. I still have faults but who doesn't. FALLEN football idol Wayne Carey and model girlfriend Kate Neilson have gone their separate ways after a stormy two-year relationship.
Family sources close to Carey said last night they believed it was a final break-up rather than a separation. "It was amicable, and they are both moving forward in their lives," the source said.
But Ms Neilson denied their relationship was over. "I'm just going away for a week or two to clear my head -- just to get away from Melbourne for a bit," she said.
The Herald Sun also believes that Ms Neilson received the $180,000 that women's magazine New Idea paid them for the interview in which they confessed to their cocaine habit.
