Courage = unquestionable
Leadership = excellent
Skills other than kicking especially tackling = very very good with tackling excellent
Dedication = outstanding
Tiger qualities = exceptional, outstanding, great, excellent etc

But....

Kicking = awful (sadly)

Never questioned his commitment to the contest or the Club just used to shudder evertime he kicked the ball

 :thumbsup

As an adult Richmond supporter I valued him highly enough to get a Tigers jumper with the number 3 on it.
Loved the bloke.
Tenacious Courageous Committed Fearless
Early on before he became a tagger could play on talls like Carey and do well
and mid size players like Ricciuto and keep them to 1 touch which was a free and a goal. Played tight and tough in the spirit of the Tigers Of Old who played before him.
His leadership could not be questioned and with more luck could have been appointed captain and would have been a worthy one too.
His kicking yes was awful but I am proud to say was there when he kicked his first goal against Port in 1997 as well as the most important goal in his career in the 3rd quarter on the run city end 50 metres out against Carlscum in the 2001 semi. It was as Rex would call it "an up country finger breaking punt"
Unfortunantely was there when he did his knee the first time in 1998 against the G against Port and can remember the crowd behind the Punt Rd end chanting his name as he was being carried off on the stretcher. I still have not forgiven Wanganeen for that incident. Unfortunantely by 02 onwards a 2nd knee reco had caught up with him and his best was behind him, but I had the honour of meeting him at a Richmond game and he was very humble and appreciative of my thoughts of him as a player.
A top bloke a good player a good clubman A good person overall.

the game is football, yes he had courage bla bla bla
but for heavans sake he should never ever ever even had 1 afl gme to his name, its a disgrace that a guy that my 3 yo daughter kicks better than even got a game, only the rfc would give charity games to duds that could never kick

I was at that game too and to this day I'm not sure I have ever seen such an unimportant goal be celebrated by so many team mates for so long.  The whole team almost chaired him back to his position for the restart.  :clapping

Thanks OE,
What can 1 say, okay his kicking left a LOT to be desired but besides that he personifies richmond, Now we are getting these silky skilled nancy boys (Danny Meyer) and are finishing last last last.  i dont agree with X, if the boys we have now (dont take it the wrong way i really like most of the current players) had 1/2 the guts and determination Duncan and Andrew showed we wouldnt be the laughing stock of the AFL.

I remember celebrating that goal too, it was a great moment.
I loved him, and it didn't matter that he couldn't kick, because his tackling was so good that he more than compensated with the amount of opposition turnovers he created, not to mention the sheer amount of 'saves' in the last line of defence.

Everyone was going nuts as he was lining up for that goal and after he kicked it the place went mad lol. The loudest roar for a junk time goal ever as we were already up by 13 goals. Yep the Glove would be in Richmond's top most courageous players ever but also the worst kick ever to pull on our guernsey.

The best thing about Duncan was that Buckley was always his bunny  ;D.

That he was able to play AFL for 10 years despite having the worst kicking skills probably ever displayed in the games' 100+ year history speaks volumes for the other facets of his game.

All up an ok player, and maybe even better than ok at the peak of his prime. Handy is the word for him.

this is the exaxct reason why the rfc has been sh itful for so long, cos they kept making excuses for pathetic players like duncan kellaway!  i agree he had courage, but what good is that attribute if u cannot , i stress cannot  DISPOSE OF THE BALL PROPERLY! KELLAWAYS SKILL LEVEL WAS EQUAL TO A 4 YEAR OLD PARAPLEGIC! He was outright useless and his selection was living proof that our club had no idea.  if duncan had 1/10th of the skill of glenn archer(whom had bucketsof courage and skill) then duncan would have been the equal to andrew!

but lets face facts, once danny meyer fully develops. he will develop into a good footballer, and he does have more courage than duncan. the mere fact that a skinny runt that ca snap in half actually takes tothe feild in such an underdeveloped body shows that danny has courage! i can tell u now if duncan had dannys lil body , duncan would have been a fairy!

i cantstand it or understand it why the rfc is the only team in the afl that actually play and recruit sh itheads that have no skill like duncan!  no wonder we have been such a disgrace for such a long time!

cut all the excuses aside, the facts remain the facts, and duncan was sh it, could not kick could not handball, could not run, just had a solid mark and courage ......big deal.

i spoke to buddha  2 days ago, asked him who is the worst player he ever saw or played against. he said duncan! said that the whol cats team and rest of the afl actually joked about how that tool actually got a game

i rest my case!

But best of all....

I used to love watching him play and I cant see that he made our team any worse by his being on the park.
He had what is sadly lacking today, reliability, he went out every week and did what he did best! :gotigers

You couldn't see Duncan being drafted nowdays with good foot skills becoming so crucial over the last few years (perhaps a rookie spot or working his way into the AFL via the VFL) but then you could say that for many decent footballers of yesteryear.

Tremendous defensive player, we made the 2001 preliminary final largely because of his work.
