Title: What should we do at the end of the year.....?
Post by: Stripes on May 15, 2008, 01:22:42 PM
Now I know this is very early to be thinking about the years end but...

Knowing that this is the last untouched draft period for at least 3 years and a reportedly strong draft at that -

Should we tank to get a priority draft pick.

The consequences of this action would be that -

Negative
* We would more than likely lose our coach (Jackstars dream! ;))
*Lose sponsorship and possibly ticket sales and membership for next year
*Endure another year of redicule from the football world and pain viewing each game

Positive
Gain the two choices in the top 5 (probably) plus the first choice in the other drafts (Cousins?) and at least 5 quality players to continue to add depth to our young list

Should we attempt to make the eight and then try and trade aggressively potentially loosing some of our more better senior players

The consequences of this action would be that -

Negative
* We would have a heavily reduced compacity during the draft period
* We would potentially lose much loved experienced players
* We would probably finish outside the eight so miss out on finals and good draft choices
* Other clubs (The Dons have already stated as much) would be competing with us with the same trading strategy

Positive
*We get to see the Tigers win occasionally!
*membership, ticket sales and sponsorship would be higher
*We could gain more and better draft options with aggressive trades

Should we attempt to make the eight and then hold onto our more senior players and trust in the development of our youth

The consequences of this action would be that -

Negative
* We would be relatively inactive during the trade and draft periods
* We would be putting all our eggs in one basket with our current young players
* We may lack the depth to play 'a sustained era of success' when our senior players retire

Positive
*We get to see the Tigers win occasionally!
*membership, ticket sales and sponsorship would be higher
*We keep our all of our senior players to help support the younger stars and shoulder the pressure giving the youth time to mature and develop confidence.

So keeping in mind it is not even half way through this season, what would your choice be?[ib]

We need to build a winning culture.

Now let's see...

How can we do that?

Hmmmmm?

Maybe the best way is by winning.   :thumbsup

Agree with MCMLXV.  We are at the stage where we need to (and are capable of) developing a winning mindset.  We should try and win as many as possible this year and look at trading 1 or 2 older/middle of the road players for picks at the end of the season.

ive had enough of losing i really have.
enough is enough.

top 5 draft picks in the last 20 years have given us nothing.. A winning culture is what we need.

with that comes success.

I would TANK and get the picks. 3 or 4 years from our supporters will be laughing.

Hmmmmm?

sometimes u actually make sense so u leave me no choice.

only winning will silence the critics.....

we can build our team by offloading duds like pathetic pettifer and maybe someone else descent.

I think one of our best drafts in a while was when our first pick was 13 (Riewoldt) and we also got Edwards, Connors and Collins.

They all look like they could be handy players.

Relax Stripes, we have Francis Jackson drafting for us.  :thumbsup

Yeah and I had already planned to come on in here, the second after the national draft had ended for this year after hopefully getting Natanui and Rich or something, I wanted to come on here and say

"Lets Tank in 2009"  ;D

Not buying in on any arguments involving the TANK word. Absolute load of bollocks.

What should we do ? Well probably plan our last September holiday for a while, it could be booked for a while after this year.  :gotigers

yes...I'm with you two! ::)

Anyway back to the topic - Do you believe there is any worth left in players like Bowden, Petts or Tivendale ? Would you trade away Newman, Schulz, Hughes, Meyer or the like for higher draft choices or do you think we wouldn't get as much in return as we would for losing them?

I'm tending more and more do the line of keeping our senior players to take the pressure off our developing youth but only teams have had success with trading away their older stars so who knows?

yes some tough decisions need to be made i feel.
We are not going to give away our draft picks so the only option is to gain draft picks by offloading some or all of the names u have mentioned.
petts i dare say we would get a pick around 30, same for schulz.
meyer maybe around 40.
so we could play a big part in the draft without giving up any of our picks.

newman has had a rough few games this year but i think we have to keep him. its a confidence thing with him i feel and his courage is second to none

I don't see us in a position to tank. We play Essendon and Melbourne in the next 4 weeks so we could be saying good-bye to the priority pick within a month. In any case 2 1/2 wins from 8 games has us on track for about 8 wins for the year anyway. A 12th spot finish would see us with a top 5 pick. I could live with that seeing what's available in the U18s.

Should we attempt to make the eight and then try and trade aggressively potentially loosing some of our more better senior players

Should we attempt to make the eight and then hold onto our more senior players and trust in the development of our youth
Even if we don't make the eight which seems likely we should try to trade for at least another decent pick. Whether we can with picks a premium this year thanks to the new teams is another question.

It's games like today that your first option Stripes of tanking becomes tempting  :-\. Today should remind the club where it's at for those getting ahead of themselves and even if we rediscover some ticker after this spanking in the next 12 weeks, tough decisions still need to be made on same old Tigers at the end of the year for us to keep moving forward with the cubs.

But on the other hand you are happu to cream yourself - 'omg Cotchin is so good!'  ::)

Time to tank.

Morton, Connonrs types should be blooded. Hyde, Pettifer, Bowden never played again.

10 games played. 3 won.
