Frawley: Recycling hurts Saints
Jon Ralph | May 27, 2008
FORMER Richmond coach Danny Frawley says St Kilda has made the same costly list management mistake he did when he over-rated his side in 2001.
St Kilda this year topped up its list with four recycled players in a bid for its second premiership.
Yet after nine rounds the Saints are struggling and were this week described by coach Ross Lyon as mentally and physically soft.
Former St Kilda star Frawley believes some highly paid players have become complacent, but said the main issue is the list quality. He thinks it's time to introduce a wave of kids, and says lack of quality recruiting in past seasons is mortally wounding his old club.
After a preliminary final appearance in 2001, the Tigers traded for Greg Stafford, Paul Hudson and Adam Houlihan, and missed the riches of the 2001 national draft.
"They tried to win (the flag) and you can't blame them for that," Frawley said.
"When you keep propping it up you have to play these guys. It's been coming for three or four years.
"You can get caught in a difficult spot as a coach. We did it in 2001 when we finished third. It was the super-draft, and we didn't really compete in that at all, and it leaves you vulnerable. It is a little bit where the Saints are as well."
Frawley believes list management is now as important as quality coaching.
"The way Hawthorn has a structured list, it is quite remarkable. They have had a steadfast process.
"The fact is they (Saints) have had salary cap pressures for five or six years.
"There is a bit of that fat-belly syndrome with a few of the players. Now Ross is saying, 'We are all getting our fair whack but we are under-performing'."
Just as Brisbane has rallied after a mini-rebuild, Frawley believes St Kilda can again surge with prudent recruiting.
"They have still got a window. They look slow, but only have to inject 2-3 players. Throw in a Cyril Rioli and a Sharrod Wellingham type and there is a bit of spark."
Frawley supported Lyon's public criticism of his players.

Spuds recruiting is a huge reason we have been struggling around the bottom of the ladder for so many years. He was a players coach who was more of a captain than a manager so after using his good bloke motivational skills in the first year or so to get the best out of the playing list he had nothing else left to give. Spud had no idea about strategy, list management, trading or player development. He saw things as a player which is why we are where we are. He just didn't have the smarts.
It has taken a long time to given look like we are developing quality depth in our list and now we even have good players having to fight in the 2nd to press for a game. We can now actually afford to allow players like Rance, Putt, Gourdis and Collard time to develop rather than rushing them in like we did with Lids and Bling.
Spud didn't get his nickname for his brains now did he :P

Thread = rubbish bin ;D

Good on Spud for admitting his mistake. He's qualified to comment and give advice about what not to do.
Wasn't too long ago he was annoyed about it being said that he left the list in a mess. Seems he's owning up to it now. Bet he didn't think that through. :D

Funny how he praises the Club (Hawks) he is now involved with ::)

Lets face it, Spud was given full reign, however he did not have the List Manager (Cameron), Development Manager (McCrae), Chief Recruiters (Jackson) or CEO's (Wright) to be able to do it all.
I'm not saying he was up to it for 5 years, but in terms of club administration & administration supportive structure the Tigers just did not have the resources to do that hard yards and went for a quick & cheap option in 2001.
7 years down the track, at least he is man enough to admit that yes he got it wrong, but I don't hear to many excuses from him when he may have legit reasons to roll out.
He is paid for an opinion, it maybe dull or inaccurate, but at least he has done something no-one on this forum has done in play for the Vics, captain as well as coach an AFL side to a finals series.

Spud now admits he got it wrong after making the PF in 2001 but he still denies that he left a trainwreck of a list when he finally walked out the door that only now 4 years later we are starting to come out the other side of. As poor a coach Peter Schwab was at least he didn't decimate Hawthorn's list and not recruit for the future like Spud did to us over 5 years :banghead. That is why Spudly they've been able to rebound within 3 years ::).

Hmm top up gems like Houlihan Hudson Fletcher Morrison Weller Nicholls Blumfield that just come to instantly to mind suggest Spud should shut up permanently and never ever talk football again and tend to the farm in Bungaree.

Spud's now in today's Age....
Former St Kilda captain and Richmond coach Danny Frawley said the Saints had fallen for a similar mistake to the Tigers when he was coach, of misreading the list and believing the group was close to a flag and basing their recruiting accordingly.
"There are a few clubs who have tried to top up and get themselves close … the Tigers being one," he said.
"Essendon have tried to top up and top up, and Fremantle thought they had the window of opportunity there to win one. And I reckon it is worth the punt, but it hurts you long term, not short term, if it doesn't work.
"The reason St Kilda got there (close) was because of all the good drafting with the early picks they had, and then they traded draft picks away to get players, and that hasn't helped their wants and needs.
"I know it is all very easy in hindsight, but you get these sorts of guys [young guns a club needs] with picks instead of the older guys and the list isn't looking too bad."

who are we trying to convince here
we all knew the damage Spudly was doing to the club 1/2 way through his contract
we all talked about it then
no-one listened then
no-one will listen now cause the damage is done & left for others to fix up
so we are all wasting out time writing about what we already knew & know now
he owned up big deal nothing will come of it
build a bridge, get over it

Because we can still pull out old Spud pics ;)

Hey, mt :)
How about Spud's gameplan he employed at Richmond that you let out of the bag a few years back?
That's gotta be helpful to Mark Harvey. :D Especially if Daffy Duck explains it to him.

Here you go FF :thumbsup
