Matthew Richardson's boozy night
Megan McNaught | June 09, 2008 12:00am
BROWNLOW Medal fancy Matthew Richardson is the latest AFL player to be involved in a boozy nightclub incident.
The Richmond star was escorted from South Melbourne nightspot Motel about 3am yesterday.
Onlookers said Richardson was being "very loud" and appeared drunk before security asked him to leave.
A reveller said Richardson stayed in the front bar for most of the night and had been drinking heavily.
"He looked very messy and was very unsteady on his feet," she said.
She had also seen him drinking at Prahran nightspot Electric Ladyland earlier in the night.
Richmond spokeswoman Judith Donnelly confirmed Richardson and a group of friends were asked to leave the Motel nightclub.
"He'd had a few drinks but that was it . . . he wasn't doing anything crazy. I don't think that was really being kicked out -- it was just time to go," she said.
"He (Richardson) doesn't think it's an issue."
The incident comes a week after Hawthorn star Lance Franklin was evicted from city club CQ Bar.
The Richardson incident happened on the first Saturday night test of the Brumby Government's controversial 2am liquor licence lockout.
Police spokesman David Fitzgerald said the night passed smoothly.
"We had officers checking all night and everyone seemed to be following the rules.
"The venues which had won exemptions were complying with all the regulations regarding security."
Police arrested 17 people for being drunk, four for assault and one for possessing the drug ecstasy.

Oh please - are the media going to report on every time a player has a bit too much to drink. ::) He couldn't have been too bad as he was on "Game Break" yesterday morning and didn't look hungover.

ummmmmmmm Best to say nothing :shh
But you already have ::)

Its best to say nothing, media wise . Ricky is harmless and keeps to his own group of friends when he is out. Move on!
-
Then why make the previous statement, to make it out as if there was more to it?
That's my point.
And now you say move on.
You're a joke!
Media beat-up, anyone that has ever met the guy will know that.
-
I can understand that.
I'd be drinking pretty effing heavily too if I was a champion player at a club that hasnt been able to get its pooh together for my whole career. :banghead :shh
Drink up Richo, doesnt look like it will be get any better for you when you retire after your 18th season. :lol :-X :(
And regardless he was on AFL Gameday at 10:30am that morning looking fresh enough.
-
And he had rehab at 9.00 next morning, must not of been too drunk :cheers

Then what did you mean by your original post? I read it like Moi did - as though you knew more but weren't going to say anything.
-
And furthermore, I have no problem in him having a drink, he deserves to have one, playing with some of his limp wristed team mates would drive you to drink, have a Corona for me big Rick!

i chatted with newy though for a bit. He is a genuine nice bloke and was very friendly when i chatted with him..
this is all crap it really is.
"ooh buddy was seen scratching his ars-e near the corner of king and lonsdale, lets tell the herald sun" give me a break
-
Didn't most of us have one too many after that pee poor game.
So get of his back he's only human just like the rest of us.
I would love to follow some of these media dopes and as soon as they made a mistake report it, then see how they feel with it being on the other foot.
-
Get off these players backs. Really. Absolute garbage article.
-
Oh god this is rubbish
just cause you play football, people want you to have no life
How many players in my lifetime have l seen knockback VFL/AFL careers because its too demanding on their life & they prefer to just get a few kicks with mates & have a drink at the club afterwards
-
he deserves a drink Richardson ...
he obviously has no fun on match day ...
so leave him alone!
-
:birthday :birthday :birthday :birthday :birthday :birthday :birthday

Maybe he was celebrating somthing other than football.
He was unsteady on his feet, so what we all know he has a leg injury. :lol :lol

jack at his best again.

Two things idiot.
I didnt delete it.
And I do go to the Motel and Albert Park Hotel.
And guess what, if you go there , you might see the big fella occassionally ::) And me as well although I dont associate with "" riff raff" :cheers
-
The club says there was nothing in it as far as Richo night out goes.
Wallace said we had no issue with it. There's no rule against drinking. We won't be introducing security guards for our players. We've always said we'll treat you as a man. He went out and had a few drinks as you do as a man, it was a 8 day break, he was asked to leave so he did. No issue. End of story.
-
The way it should be. Should not have heard any of this.
