Title: Good news thread
Post by: Go Richo 12 on June 11, 2008, 11:50:20 AM
Just thought i'd start a thread devoted to nothing but positive comments about the Tigers. It may not be exciting and it may not get many replies but if anyone out there is beginning to feel like me, i'm sick of all the negative stuff, i know it's good therapy to let off steam. I'm not bagging anyone either.I'll start with the fact the Tigers now turn out profits, are going good at VFL level and Cotchin is one that may see our draft choices applauded for a change. P.S. Did anyone catch up with that Corkhead Crows fan stiring up crap at the Tiger supporters?

Great minds thin alike Go Richo 12! I was thinking of starting the same thread only yesterday after continuely reading all the negativity about our list, game style and in particular our coaches lately, I felt like not returning to the site.

There is a lot of positives about our club so I agree, lets start talking about them.  :thumbsup

Our midfield looks like it will one of the powerhouse engine rooms of the competition in a couple of years.

The combination of Lids, Foley and Cotchin alone make we start to salivate. I think these three will be a the next Judd, Cousins, Kerr or Voss, Black, Acka combination in future years! :cheers

Add to these potential superstars players of the potential calibre of tambling, white, connors, polo, collins and possibly Meyer (I think he will surprize many people when he returns) I think we have some outstanding midfield stock. If Cogs comes back from the 'dead' and regains his past form then he will add both experience and strength to the line up.

It's hard not to get excited about the possibilities! :gotigers

Our Coburg form has been outstanding.

Our ressies are winning games consistently by over 100+ points and the Coburg team is marching its way up the ladder.

Last year the Cobug team played off against in the finals against Geelong who had a team full of mature senior players. King played in both their reserves and AFL grand final team!
The experience that this would have given our listed players is immeasurable.

At last we seem to be developing depth to our list and competition for places. Players such as JON, Hughes, Morton, Riewoldt, Connors, Polo, Collins, Rance etc putting pressure on the starting 22 which as a result is creating a stronger overall list and more self motivated players.

Very positive  :clapping

We are only at the start with Cotchin, we have Rance, Putt, Gourdis and Collard to see as well. I have high hopes for all of these boys.

I love the tigers. I have changed my wife from a Saints, daughter from the Bombers to the Tigers and me and my son have been Tigers all along.
A great thread well done in coming up with it I wouldn't have thought of it. I hope its a hit.

I agree.

Who will be better - Rance or Thursty? Do you think Rance and Thursty will become our Michaels & Leppitch? From what I have heard Rance is more of a half back who has both the size and speed to trouble small and tall forwards.

Collard will be a blessing if he comes on. In the past his attitude and defensive pressure has been a concern which saw him dropped from the Dockers list. From what I understand now though he has been attempting to prove himself on and off the field and has been impressing. I think he will our elusive pocket player in the future.

Where do you see Putt and Gourdis playing for us?

We are lacking in forwards at the moment and Gourdis was recruited for his mecurial skills in this department. His kicking was the concern which is why they have been playing his as a super fast backman but I would love to see him lining up in our forwardline in the future. People have likened him to Buddy which if even half true would mean he is a tremendous talent.

Putt is another who could be a tall forward or ruckman. As we a thin in both areas I am excited about seeing him play in either position in the future. Just needs a bit of bulk and experience and we will be have a '10 year player' I'm certain  :)

But how good is Cotchin..... :santa

Our back six has been effectively turnovered in the space of 2 years. Newy who was our youngest back there is now the oldest at 25. Thursty and Moore have stood up as talls. The true CHB spot will hopefully be filled by Rance in time. Draft another tall with size such as a Hurley and we'll be doing nicely for key defenders.

Foley, Lids and Cotchin seem to be our future starting midfield. However you need around 12 decent mids rotating through there so the workload is spread and you don't fall away when your starting mids are resting. This is where Tambling, White, Connors, Edwards, Collins and Polo will need to come in. As 18-21 y.o. it's a promising base to build the new midfield from. Another couple of more mids especially of the first 3 quality plus a promising 200+cm tap ruckman or two will do nicely.

Jack and Morton look good finds up forward. The good thing about many of our younger mids is they are more versatile and can play up forward too when rested. Collard will be a massive bonus if he can build up his fitness base (only 19 remember). A strong 196cm power forward would do nicely here.

Still a couple of gaps that need filling but nothing good recruiting can't fix in the next 2 drafts and not the all gloom and doom some are claiming.

the last time i felt good was in 2001 when we beat the blues.

thats 7 years of crap ive had to put up with.

whats good..steve wright has done a great job.

lids, foley, cotch, will, and more have done great

tambling not great. has done nothing since he came along with polak and a few others

The good: Foley, the emergence of Deledio, finally, and Cotchin's first couple of games look promising.

Off field performance is good.

Thursty and Moore have stood up as talls.

Jack and Morton look good finds up forward.

This is where we go wrong I reckon. To say that Thursfield and Moore have "stood up" is a massive overrating of them at this stage. I would rate both well behind Nathan Brown (Pies) but both have been around much longer.

Same with Riewoldt and Morton.

All show good signs, but that's about as far as it goes right now IMO.

Brown is playing in a side which provides most weeks midfield pressure and protection and also has Wakelin, Maxwell and O'Brien beside him in defence as "talls" supporting him as 3rd man up to spoil. Brown has been very good but I don't see where you can say he is well ahead (Moore is a 3rd defender so plays a different role anyway). When we have been competitive in the midfield our defence has stood up (that doesn't mean starring btw just the defender doing their job).

No defender has a hope when the opposition midfield are allowed a free run and the forwards are one out. Ask poor Patty Ryder who will be a gun but still had 9 kicked on him. Nathan Brown found that out against Hawthorn too when Buddy, Roughead and Williams kicked 6, 6 and 5 goals respectively such was the Hawk midfield dominance against the Pies.

Where do you see Putt and Gourdis playing for us?

Gourdis on a wing playing a richo role, but if he can kick straight he could become a very decent full forward option.
Putt I see as a potential full forward who can take a turn in the ruck.

Gourdis could be anything. I also agree wit you about Putt in the forwardline also. Gus will step up soon and take more of the rucking duties also.

Danny Meyer getting through games and moving freely is a positive as well.

Last year he really struggled but the last couple of weeks he has looked good and very fit

WP - is Meyer worth a game? Where are his strengths? I would love to see Meyer prove all those who thought he was a draft mistake and should be traded, wrong.  :pray

I'm hoping we see Meyer break onto the seen this year and become an important part of our team.

Fingers crossed

Stripes,

Danny's played the last 3 weeks for the Coburg ressies. Certainly not starring but at least running around as opposed to labouring around like he did at times with the injured hip. To me that's a positive especially after 2007

At the moment he needs match fitness. Obviously the next step is Coburg seniors. BTW he has been playing off the HBF in the ressies with some time in the mid field

It is tough this week because the ressies again have the bye and the 12/10 rule applies to the seniors this week because they are playing stand alone Tassie. I reckon he will play Coburg seniors soon, whether he shows enough to get an AFL gig well that's up to Danny I suppose.

I don't think anyone can doubt his ability, super talented kid but I reckon as it is with a lot of the talented kids it depends on how bad they want it

WP l could look good playing VFL seconds  ;D

Thanks William. I'm very hopeful that our faith in him is warranted and his pre-draft potential is fufilled. I think with his height and skills he would be a tremendous long term asset to the team if only he can stay injury free.

Another positive at the moment is our second half draw. We we have the potential to come home strong with a much easier list of opposition teams than our first part of the year. I would love to see us play the kids and start to regularly win with them. This would give our list more self belief in themselves, the team plan and each other.

I know it isn't always but I think winning games this year will be a positive. The bottom of the ladder won't move from here on end and the 8 is unlikely to change so if we are going to finish between 9th and 12th we might as well have some joy on the way.  :whistle

Fair point Monk

But the point I was trying ot make was that he is actually running freely, without any sign of that hip problem he had. Last year he really struggled to get through games, struggled with the lateral movement, couldn't change direction to save himself  ;D. This year he's been doing that. As I said next step is Coburg seniors and then ....

I reckon it is always a positive when a bloke who's had real injury problems starts to look fit again  ;D

Always feel good beating the Bummers.

Our supporters are loyal.

Our list is young and can only improve individually and as a team - if we play them together.

Lids seems to be getting better and better. I have him in my SuperCoach team and he is one of the most consistent points winners I have. I loved his two runs through the middle and his subsequent pinpoint delivery into the forwardline. He is starting to use his pace to his advance once more like he did in his first year. He beginning to perform to the level we have all hoped he would.

Cotchin also had another good game. While he did not have the same impact as he did in the first half of the week before, whenever he touched the ball he made things happen such as Tucky's goal in the last. You know he is good when in his 5th game he is already been 'minded' by the opposition.

Richo was fantastic all over the ground. Funny how accurate he has become by just having a few kicks up the ground before he has his first shot on goal. All in the mind obviously for our Richo. We need to start the cloning process for the big fellow now! Browny was another who is starting to get back to his best. I would love to see the Batman and Robin show return but substitute Hughes/Riewoldt into the capped crusader role instead of Richo!  :rollin

Riewoldt's mark was also fanatastic as was his pass to Cotchin which resulted in a goal. I am hoping he creates and kicks many more goals for us over the rest of the year.

JON also was a plus. He seems more confident and poised than I remember him. He made one silly decision which resulted in a goal to Melbourne but the rest of his game was very promising. I was fearful it would be another Tiv situation again but he proved an asset.

There was many pluses including the ommission of Tiv and Petts. Two or three more older players need to move into the Burgers and I will be completely satisfied with the Tigers lineup.

Overall I was happy for the win  :thumbsup

I would go so far as to say they will eventually form a formidable midfield that will have the strength and depth to embarrass opposition. Yesterday Foley had a quite game (second in a row actually) but the other midfielders stepped up to shoulder the load, particularly Lids. In the past if you shut down our best midfielder we were unable to respond. Now we have a much more even mix across the centre.

Positives, positives, positives  :lol
