Demetriou wants Monday night footy back when the league expands to 18 teams.
Thoughts?

Demetriou is a moron.
Has not worked here before crowds are down with regards to it ppl are buggered on a Monday its just not feasable. Just b/c the NRL have it does not mean we should follow suit , and what of Demetriou's pledge in the draw to give clubs a 6 day break I am sure with Monday night footy some poor club may be interstate on a Monday yet front up on a Saturday arvo or night. Please the man is conteptuous and provoking. He should shut his mouth and not tinker with something that aint broke merely to make a few bucks for one of his mates or appease some moron. If it aint broke bootsokefalo don't try to fix it.
Having said that if the Tiges were playing on a Monday I would go. Does not mean I agree with it but I would go to see my team regardless.

Monday night Football is an institution in the United State and commands massive TV ratings. It also does OK for the NRL viewer as a point of differentiation within its Foxtel agreement, however it does not deliver extra attendance to the match.
The monday night is really a made-for-TV event, so if the AFL wants more money from the broadcast agreement to support an 18 team competition then I think that it will be on the table during the negotiations. Attendance maybe a secondary consideration.
Personally, I dont have a problem with it as I remember when there were only the 6 games on Saturday with a 1 hour replay at 6.30 and that was it before the VFA telecast on the Sunday. I'd be happy to see a spread of games across a weekend culminating on a Monday night.
Monday night footy may just be the price for maintaining the 9+1 traditional clubs in Melbourne and/or a Saturday afternoon Grand Final.

Im a yes to Monday night footy in an 18 team comp.

The AFL tried it once and it was a disaster
Even C'wood couldn't get decent crowds
The only reason they are considering this is because of the TV rights.
Big Neah for me >:(

The only successful Monday night game was our famous one against North in '95. I hope that doesn't mean we'll get lobbed with them given all the foxtel games we get ::) :help.

Yeah but that was over the Easter Weekenend in 95 so we played North in the Easter Monday night and the round culminated with the first Anzac Day game which was a draw.
Pies played the Cats in rd 9 96 on a Monday night they got 50 odd thousand and both teams were doing well at that stage of the year.
In 97 we played W Coast and had a smallish crowd and Freo hosted Adelaide a few weeks later.
Novelties like Thursday nights will always draw more. Look at the Pies centenary in 92 or the AFL centennary game between Geelong and Essendon in 96. Both games drew more than 80000.
Keep it the way it is. This aint America it won't work.

Monday Night footy is being pushed hard again
Players consider Monday night football
Jon Ralph | September 04, 2008
AFL players would consider taking part in Monday night football, but only if it significantly increased the league's TV-rights deal.
AFLPA chief executive Brendon Gale said the players were open to an extra day of football each week, as long as their weekly six and seven-day breaks were preserved.
The momentum continues to quicken for what would be a ratings bonanza, with the league considering its inception by as early as 2012 - the first season of any new TV deal.
The league has formulated several fixturing models for an 18-team competition, one of them including Monday night football.
This year's Herald Sun footy fans survey showed an overwhelming 65 per cent did not want Monday night football.
But Gale said if an overwhelming commercial case could be put to the players, it would be hard to knock it back.
"If that was the case, we would look at it, providing the players didn't have their ability to get an appropriate break between games prejudiced," Gale said.
The NFL's Monday night football is the drawcard game of the round in the US and attracts extraordinary ratings and huge TV-rights money.
The AFL has borrowed many of its ideas from the NFL, which has split its rights among five broadcasters. ESPN, for example, carries only Monday night football.
The AFL is considering selling individual timeslots and days to help drive up bidding next time.

Nah. Because knowing the AFL, we'll get a Monday night game only to play the Friday night as well.
-
yes

Nah, I can't wait till Monday to watch my team, Sunday night twilight games are bad enough.

Why copy the US when we don't have that footy culture. The EPL despite all its popularity and wealth in terms of crowds and tv audiences around the world still only play games on Saturday and Sunday. The EPL doesn't even have Friday night games which has always surprised me (a lower division game is usually played on Friday night)

EPL do have Monday night games in most Gameweeks MT. Nevertheless I don't think we should have Monday night games we don't have the market for it.

I say no to it. It looks like he's trying his best to do whatever the NRL does.
