Richmond Football Club reveals Punt Rd makeover
Mark Stevens | Herald-Sun | July 23, 2008

THIS is the first glimpse of the futuristic re-development that will transform Punt Rd Oval.

The redevelopment, boosted last week by a $6.75 million injection from the Federal Government, will be completed by mid-2010.

Demolition of the old Richmond social club is due to start in January.

Richmond chief executive Steven Wright yesterday said the bold new design was inspired by jubilant scenes in the rooms.

"The concept of this design came about from a picture of the players linking arms and singing the team song after the game," Wright said.

It will be a dramatic meeting of new and old, with the original Jack Dyer stand to remain.

"This will be a 21st century building joined by a 19th century building," Wright said.

The budget for the redevelopment is $20 million.

It will include a training facility and indigenous centre of excellence.

"We are looking nationally and internationally so we can develop a world-class facility using best practice," Wright said.

"The football department will be at the forefront of cutting-edge and high-performance technology.

"Punt Rd will once again become the centre of community life for the residents of inner Melbourne."

The rebuilding of Richmond's Punt Road headquarters began with the earlier $7 million construction of the indoor pool, offices and administration centre.

The new indigenous institute will focus on elite football and will be open to boys and girls.

Richmond hopes to encourage indigenous youth to stay at school longer before going on to further education and training.

The cornerstone of the bold initiative will be the creation of the REAL (Richmond Emerging Aboriginal Leaders) camps.

Through the camps, Richmond hopes to provide experiences in four areas -- personal development, skill acquisition, role modelling and mentoring, and health and lifestyle education.

Up to 300 indigenous youths will complete programs at Punt Rd every year.

It looks bloody terrible, will look dated very quickly
It's like it's tried to rip off the Fed Square design but badly
If you want something modern look towards Southern Cross Station instead, lots of glass for a classy look, not artsy and poo

agree looks bloody shocking, the architect is a freakin loonatic.
Seriously hope the supporters let the club know this is not the way to go down.
future maintenance would be costly on such a design & it just dont fit in
will draw anger against this design for sure from surrounding property owners

Ugh!  I'm not particularly impressed with that either.  And I don't care much for the rationale - inspired by players linking arms etc.  I don't care whether it's inspired to look like a premiership cup -  It either looks good or it doesn't.

its all been approved by council

the funds have been allocated

We will have the best facilities in the league

The look is a matter of taste, what happens inside is what really matters,

Enjoy tiger fans, the club has never been in a better position to get the best out of the playing list

No poo Stephen Wright is a fricken genius

First I dont think this design is all that bad, maybe It will look better in real life rather than on a pc. Anyway I was a supporter of that Garage Door design a while back. What ever happened to the Garage Door lol. ;D

By the way whats the odds of sponsors logos appearing on the huge white panels on the front of the new building. I reckon sponsors logos on all the panels would bring in a very decent sum.

Love the Colorbond sheeting look on the walls.  :lol All we need now is a few cows, a heeler and a Massey Ferguson strategically placed on the oval.

I won't disagree with you on either point because that's absolutely true.  Like you I'm happy that our players can access cutting edge facilities but appearances count for something - particularly when you're so well positioned and you have a lot of traffic going past every day.

We have to ask ourselves what kind of impression we want to make on passers-by.

I agree... a matter of poor taste

Seriously, for $20 million, we deserve something that will at least still look good in 10 years.
Commission the design out to a university as a competion or something, at least then you'll get a range of suggestions and it won't cost a fortune.
Could even give it to a preschool fingerpainting class and they'd come up with something better than what we've got proposed now.

Massive dissapointment

the problem is that the whole facade looks like a tin roof look. its not a total disaster but it is disappointing. for 20 million youd atleast expect to get a decent facade rather than tin roof sheeting.

Actually if you want to look at a first class facility that I reckon you could argue is as good if not better than the Lexus centre - check out the Whitten Oval development, a WIP but a beauty

WP - Fed Square certainly polarises opinion and I certainly wondered what the hell they were doing when it was going up, but it does work and was very well designed. This Punt Road proposal is just a cheap knock off though.

LAB actually won an international design competition to do Fed square. This is just a local architect thinking that weird shapes thrown together is modern and creative when it's the complete opposite.

At the end of the day, if you want something that won't look dated, just try and make it classy. 101 Collins was designed and built almost 20 years ago, but you'd never know it. It's still one of the best looking buildings in the Melbourne skyline. Perhaps it's unfair to compare something like that to a lowrise development, but the theory still applies.

No flow or connection with the existing buildings and as HMH said they couldn't even get the sash the right way around  :wallywink.

Oh well let's hope the money has been spent of the most important stuff which is inside on the facilities for the players.

The look is a matter of taste

All of life is a dispute over matters of taste - Nietzsche

FWIW I don't mind it. You got the AFL draft and all these other centralising forces basically making all of the clubs the same. We could have built something generic but we decided to do something different. We could have built something old-fashioned to suit the JD stand but this shows we aren't looking to the past anymore.

Driving home last night and looking accross, it wont be any worse than the old social club thats for sure.
Never liked Fed Square, but never really liked the Gas & Fuel towers either. :rollin
Will get used to it I spose, as long as there is space aside for the members to have pre and post game drinks and the kids have a kick of a footy on the oval.
A checkboard dancefloor and sticky carpet wouldn't go astray either  :rollin
We are still in best position of all the vic clubs as far as I am concerned.
We will have History mixed with our future at our original home right next door to our new home. No other club can have that  ;D
Being right on the doorstep of the G we should be able to use this facility to its absolute max draining as much $$$ out of opposition supporters as we possibly can.
And most of all as much as possible, ensuring the Tigers exsitence for many years to come, so I can still watch them from the other side once I have departed.

Still ugly but meh  :gotigers

Truth is, we aren't going to know if its ugly for a while. Many pieces of architecture are intially, in public and critical opinion, ugly. Need I remind you of what they had to say about a certain tower in Paris in the late 19th century? Who would have thought the Golden Gate bridge could once be described as "an  eye-sore to those living and a betrayal of future generations". The point is that the context has not yet been formed. Change often sits uneasy with the human mind. Overcoming the fear of change is a worthwhile pursuit.

Thats very deep Jake lol
I actually dont mind it too much, you take a risk with anything that looks different, most people wont like it first up, us humans have a very high resistance to change. I reckon it will grow on us....and maybe we could get the Yellow Peril and have it as a garden ornament there lol ;)

When the renavations go on I think that there should be a members walk. Where we paid whatever it will cost to have our name imprinted onto bricks. And these could lead up towards anywhere. But at least we all could walk along the path and look for our names. Just would add a little more human interest to it.

They have one in front of the old social club. Not sure what's going to happen to it once the area is demolished to make way for the new building for the players' facilities.
