Title: Tuesdays with Terry - 29/7
Post by: one-eyed on July 29, 2008, 01:46:53 PM
A snippet from SEN

* Not phased about his contract not being extended past 2009 this year.

* Wasn't happy about the way the Miller sacking was handled and wasn't happy being put in the position he was before the game because it was leaked.

All pretty much fair enough

A bit more..

* The hardest thing to do is to keep things in house. Frustrating for everyone when that doesn't happen. His frustration over the weeknd was being put in a postion that he wouldn't have been if there was no leak.

* SEN replayed Free saying they will look at Terry's contract down the track.

* Plough said he's had conservations with Tony, Gary and Steven over his contract. Very comfortable with it. Said everyone was happy to evaluate things at the end of 5 years from day one.

* SEN said it doesn't look like there will be many, if any, changes for us. We're planning for Ablett to play. Terry is pretty confident he will.

* Polak will return to rehab at Punt Rd within a fortnight.

I think it is pretty much a given, and Terry would know this, that if we don't play finals football next year he will be out. This year has been a bonus but 2009 is the watershed year. Any extention next year will be for 2 or 3 years only. More than that is extremely unlikely.

The problem with Terry is that when he speaks he makes a hell of a lot of sense.  :-X

* Hope we can at least be honourable to our word. At the end of 5 years is fair in my book.

* Hope Ablett does play, I know I'm strange  :help

Terry was SEN's play of the day

* Clearly he became spokesperson for the club on the weekend. No one wants change as we've been crying out for stability. However management thought otherwise and as a employee of the club you abide by the decision. The media asked Terry if he agreed with the decision and Terry said it's not a decision for him to make - it's a board decision. He did say he sees Greg as a good friend.

* Don't see it affecting the playing group long term. Players are there to play, coaches are there to coach and the board is there to make decisions. Need a management person to run the footy side of things as coaches and players come and go. You want the finances to be there so you want a management person. He'll happily work with whoever is chosen.

* More than comfortable with waiting until the end of his 5-year contract and his performance be re-evaluated then. Who knows the board may want to go another way or he may want to go another way. It works both way. This was decided on from day one.

* We're a good club now. We've had an ordinary 72 hours but we're a good club now. Internally it is working well. We just need to get the external things right.

* Polak is continuing with his rehab and as mentioned we expect him to be doing his rehab at the club in a fortnight.

Fair and proper - and people forget we did it with Frawley.

I liked the way Caro stuck up for the club when the others started with the "eating their own" crap last night, particularly Archer. He might be a good bloke but he's hardly incisive - did he assk Brown one question ¿
Title: Wallace, Tigers still happily 'married' (RFC)

Wallace, Tigers still happily 'married'

IT MAY not go as far as "'til death do us part", but Richmond coach Terry Wallace says he's happy with the state of his marriage to the Richmond Football Club, and is looking for it to continue.

Wallace's five-year deal ends after the 2009 season, and the man who has led the Tigers in 83 games says he's happy to let it run full-term before the parties sit down to assess the future.

"I'm more than comfortable – I signed a five year agreement … so that we had some stability within the football club, that was the whole reason", he said.

"We've said since day one we were happy to get to the end of the five years, look each other in the eye and see whether the marriage is working one way or another.

"It's a two-way ship – does the Richmond football club want me to continue after that period of time, do I feel like I want to continue in that role after that period of time – it works both ways.

"I'm more than comfortable – and honestly have been from day one – I'm more than comfortable with that being the situation."

Wallace said he had always felt like a part of the Tiger family, having played 11 games for the club in 1987, after 174 for Hawthorn and before 69 for the Bulldogs.

"I've got my player's tie. I know that I was probably known to be more at Hawthorn and the Bulldogs, but I came back to back to this football club because I was a past player who thought that I had unfinished business here.

"I see myself as a Richmond person – when I put my player tie on, I have pride in the fact that I played for the club.

"You look at Mal Brown – I mean, Mal Brown's a fantastic Richmond person who only played a couple of games more or less than I played for the footy club, so how long you happened to be there I don't think necessarily counts."

Title: No need for Tiger at top, says Wallace (RFC)

No need for Tiger at top, says Wallace

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace says the club's decision to part ways with long-time director of football Greg Miller was a board decision and the football department had nothing to do with it.

Miller was sacked over the weekend and the club has already begun the search for a replacement.

Wallace said the emphasis was on getting the right person for the job, not necessarily a Richmond person, or even a football person.

"You just want the right person, don't you? I don't think it matter whether that person comes from outside football or inside football if they're the right person," he said.

"If you think you can get somebody to fulfil what the club needs at the time, I'm happy to work with either.

"I don't really subscribe to the fact that that's necessarily the case (the need for a Richmond person) – I reckon that what you do is you look for the right person, and if the right person is a Richmond person, well that's absolutely fantastic, because the more you can have Richmond united, I think that's wonderful.

"But you don't get a Richmond person for the sake that it's a Richmond person if it's not the right person."

Wallace admitted the timing was not great, but said the future was the focus, not the past.

"Obviously, no-one wants change, We've cried out for stability for some time in relation to the footy division, but decisions have been made and they're board decisions, and as a senior executive of the football club, you abide by the decisions that are made and get on with life.

"That's your role and responsibility.

"It's not my decision – it had nothing to do with me, I wasn't consulted in regards to it.

"Certainly I had a good working relationship with Greg, and see him as a friend – I didn't know him prior to getting here, but see him that way – but I only want good for him.

"I think he's a great footy person and think that he'd be a great acquisition for another footy club.

"But we've just got to get on with the job at hand of being involved with the Richmond footy club, and getting the best for the Richmond footy club that we possibly can."

Terry Wallace's political plough
Jon Ralph | July 30, 2008

FOR one alarming moment yesterday, it seemed Terry Wallace might sidestep the question the football world wanted answered.

The setting was Richmond's Punt Rd and the occasion was Wallace's first media conference since Greg Miller's sacking.

The first query was a half volley outside off stump - "So Terry, what are your thoughts on the sacking?" Momentarily it seemed Wallace was refusing to play it.

"Clearly over the weekend I was the spokesman for the club and had my say . . . " was Wallace's opening gambit.

The sense of anti-climax was palpable.

What followed was one of the year's most impressive media performances.

In just over 10 minutes, Wallace handed out a masterclass in how to launch a withering attack on your board while giving the impression you are at peace with the world around you.

While Wallace's words were chosen with the tact of a master politician, there was no mistaking their intent.

Attack one from Wallace came quickly: "We have cried out for stability for some time in relation to the footy division. But decisions have been made . . . "

The hits kept coming, but were ambiguous enough to leave him a get-out clause.

"Obviously the timing of the game wasn't ideal," he continued.

"It has happened now. We got away with the victory, so we get on with life."

What must Wallace have really felt? Something like this?

"They did it on match day of all days? Could there have been a worse day? How it didn't cost us the game I will never know."

Next up was a defence of Miller: "He is a good footy person and I think he would be a great acquisition for another footy club."

Translation: "He is a good footy person and he should still be working at our club."

Wallace scarcely missed a target.

According to the coach, the club still leaks like a sieve (but tellingly not the football department) and installing ex-Richmond players just for the sake of it is a mistake.

But the kicker was worth the wait, even if the expression was mangled.

Wallace has already admitted he has hitched his wagon to the Tigers and will never coach elsewhere, but was prepared to risk that status to make his point.

"It is a two-way ship," he said. "Does the Richmond Football Club want me to continue (after next year?) Do I feel like I want to continue in that role after that period of time. It works both ways."

Beat me to it MT! This is wonderful news and incredibly inspirational! Just having him around the club could add 5 goals to our score!  :clapping :clapping :thumbsup

That great news about Polok but can anybod tell me what a "Two way Ship" is.

I know what a "Two Way Street" is but when I heard TW on the TV talk about this "Two way Ship" I was confused and amazed.

Gee you'd think he would be able to give an accurate press conference! It's not Rocket Surgery after all.  :lol

technically though, two way ships do exist. We have a ferry near us where the cars go in on one side and then off on the other and then in reverse for the other side of the riverbank. Probably a two way boat would be more accurate but nonetheless it is two way.  :thumbsup
