VFL Round 20 (Final Round Before Senior Finals)
Bendigo Bombers (13th) vs. Coburg Tigers (6th)
Date: Saturday 30th August
Venue: Windy Hill
Corner Napier and Brewster Sts Essendon (Melways Reference: Map 28 H2)
Seniors: 2.00pm
nb. No Broadcast of the game this weekend.
nb. No ressies this week as it's the first week of the finals in the Reserves and Coburg has the week off having finished on top of the ladder.
-
Shame the Coburg ressies aren't playing Bendigo this week. They would win by 200 points ;D. Essendon's long injury list has decimated the playing stocks of an already weak Bendigo at both levels. Hopefully the Pies can cause an upset over Casey and we can sneak into the top 4 :pray.

I noticed the Bendigo Bombers team didn't have any Essendon players named :P
-
Gourdis to CHB prob to play the one qualifiying finals game, but may see Rance make his AFL debut.
-
Well done to Dave on his call-up to the Coburg seniors :clapping.
I know where players are named these days is meaningless but you would think we'll have Gourdis up forward with Cleve and Rance at CHB. Then again Gourdis at CHB could cover the loss of Rance if he makes his RFC debut this week [edit: tigerlily you beat me too it :) ].
Cleve was wearing a thin black headband at training today btw. He looked like the lead singer of an 80's band lol.

Essendon has had to use every player on their list including rookies because of their long injury list. Two weeks ago Bendigo seniors and ressies lost by a combined 300 points or thereabouts. The ressies score was 10 - 185 lol. If the Burgers turn it on they still could get into the top 4 by %.
-
Is anybody providing reprts for this game ?
I am very interested to see how it pans out.
Go Gourdis, kick a bag son !
Also it would be interesting to see if any players named as emergencies dont show up.
Here's hoping Rance doesn't line up today.
-

I thought Rance got named in the final side?
-
I would assume one of the emergencies doesn't line up just in case one the senior side gets ill overnight
Probably need two emergencies not to play to be sure of a late change

That site takes a while to update, easier to get it from somewhere that is quicker and more up to date ;)

We're now in 4th spot for the moment on the same points as Werribee, but we're still about 8% shy of Casey, so if they win then we're bumped down. Werribee will go ahead on points if they win too.
-
Ok, I just checked the results, Casey smashed Collingwood so they move above us into 4th
Werribee was up by 3 goals at 3/4 time against Williamstown, but they are going against the scoring end in the last quarter, so Williamstown a good chance to get up still
-
From bg25 live at Windy Hill:
Cleve kicked 3 goals in the last qtr
Meyer BOG
Other bests: JON, Fort Caruso, Hughes, Keogh, Howat
Thanks again to bg25 and her trusty texting :cheers :thumbsup

Looks like the month of form will secure Danny another year and also make Cogs play on. Good to see Rance in the best again too. It's a hard result to base anything on as Bendigo is decimated thanks to Essendon's injuries. Coburg just did what they needed to do.
-
umpires adjusted the score after the siren ... we lost a goal
;D
After today I remember why they call the place Windy Hill :rollin
Coburg take on Frankston new week.
Venue to be advised
-
Certainly was cold and windy out there today.
Having most of the stand knocked down doesnt help these days at Bomberland.

True TFL
And the away teams change rooms? A bar no less (well the Cricket clubs change room and viewing room) :rollin :rollin

Sheesh it hasn't changed since the 80s with the U19s. Windy Hill was a good place for aftermatch tucker though :thumbsup.
-
The actual surroundings have change a fair bit.
There is no protection for half of the ground these days.
Its not really well set up for VFL matches, there is no time clock on display.
Even the phones to the bench dont work.
Coburg had to use a mobile phone as communication from the box to the bench ::)
Obviously the Essenscum havent spent any money on the game day facilities.

Last time I went to Windy Hill was the Save Our Skins game.
The lack of facilities for VFL matches provides insight as to how they view the affiliation with Bendigo.

I'd disagree with that Darth.
Bendigo & Essendon have one of the stronger VFL alignments.
I would assume that part of thier agreement calls for a couple of Bendigo home games to played at Windy Hill. I reckon it is a great way to get Essendon people to watch Bendigo. Not a doubt in my mind that if Bendigo had of had few Essendon kids running aroun then there woul dhave been a better crwod there
I reckon that in part AFL clubs think that their old home grounds are automatically acceptable because 20 years ago they were acceptable in the then VFL (now AFL comp). Yesterday proved that isn't the case ;D
-
So where is Collard at as a player? Is his attitude and fitness still an issue. He seems to be consistently kicking a bag of goals every week but could he slot into our AFL side?
Meyer and Rance must be causing headaches to the selection panel at the moment with their consistent oustanding form but once again where would they fit into the team and at who's expense?
Good to see Gourdis kick a couple and Collins look the goods also.
Great problem to have in the list - too many performing young players! :thatsgold

Match Report Vs. Bendigo Bombers
Written by Glenn Robertson
coburgtigers.com.au
For the final home and away game of 2008 the Burgers travelled to Windy Hill to take on the struggling Bendigo Bombers. Coburg were hot favourites to come away with a win, as the boys had been in hot form in the previous month, while Bendigo had failed to get a win on the board.
After a relatively hard fought out first term, the Burgers took control of the game in the second quarter to set up a massive 102 point victory.
Unfortunately the huge win didn’t elevate the side any further up the ladder with other match results not helping in any way.
The Burgers now play Frankston in an Elimination Final on Saturday 6th September at TEAC Oval. The game starts at 1.10pm with the winner to elevate to next weeks Semi-Final and the loser knocked out for season 2008.
Coburg got off to a solid start in the first term kicking four goals to Bendigo’s one. However coach Jade Rawlings may have expected a larger lead than just the twenty one points at the first change, as his men had dominated the play.
¼ Time: Coburg Tigers 4.3 (27) Bendigo Bombers 1.0 (6)
The Coburg backmen were brutal in the first half, only allowing the Bombers to score three times, and two of the scores were behinds. Danny Myer and Christian McErlain were ruthless and gave their opponents nothing, while winning a lot of possessions themselves. The backs were well supported by the Burger midfielders, in particular Paul Shelton and Dean Polo, who pushed back hard to help move the ball out of defence.
½ Time: Coburg Tigers 8.9 (57) Bendigo Bombers 1.2 (8)
Coburg continued on their merry way in the third term, pushing the margin beyond the ten goal mark. Fort Caruso was fantastic of the half forward line kicking three goals and setting up many others.
After missing most of the season after his second knee reconstruction Mark Coughlan has found some excellent form at the right stage of the season. Coughlan played through the halfback line and midfield collecting possessions at will. It’s a great sign for all football supporters to see the champion back to his best.
Coburg entered the last term knowing the game was won, but they needed to keep focus on a strong last quarter to take into next weeks first final
¾ Time: Coburg Tigers 13.14 (92) Bendigo Bombers 4.6 (30)
The Burgers piled on another seven goals in the final term, while Bendigo could only manage another one. It was a great all round display from the Burger team who won in every department. Cleve Hughes and Clayton Collard both stared up forward for the Tigers kicking four majors each. Al Collins and Fort Caruso added another six between them. It was the best the Coburg forward line had functioned all year with goals shared all over the place.
As stated earlier Coburg face Frankston at 1.10pm on Saturday 6th September at TEAC Oval in an Elimination Final.
Coburg Tigers 4.3 8.9 13.14 20.19 (139)
Bendigo Bombers 1.0 1.2 4.6 5.7 (37)
Goal Kickers: C. Hughes 4, C. Collard 4, F. Caruso 3, A. Collins 3, D. Gourdis 2, M. Coughlan, D. Polo, A. Graham, A. Horne
Best Players: M. Coughlan, D. Meyer, F. Caruso, A. Rance, C. McErlain, P. Shelton
