Geelong and Sydney winning 2 of the previous 3 flags were often used as examples of clubs who didn't need to bottom out to achieve the ultimate success whereas St Kilda did have a bunch of early picks and got nowhere as a team with them.
Now that Hawthorn, who spent 3 years in a row down the bottom collecting priority picks, have won a flag, do you think it will encourage more tanking and bottoming out?

Hawthorn beat everyone to the punch.
To get #7 off the pies in 04, #18 and #14 in 05 for Lonie and Hay, to get the picks which secured Hodge and Mitchell for Croad and then get Croad back again - these things would never happen now as there are too many clubs focusing on youth.
If you tried to trade a Lonie now you would expect a third round pick in return really.
The problem is that you have half the competition rebuilding now not even thinking about winning a flag and it makes for some uncompetitive matches at times.

I thought they only had 2 years of priority picks at the bottom - 2004 and 2005? And under the new rules I think they would have only got a 2nd round priority (pick 17ish) in 2004, thats all.

The core of the side is still made up from players who were already on the list when Clarkson arrived.
Other than a couple of more recent draftees like Rioli & Ellis it's really the inherited list plus the 2004 draft which makes up their premiership side.

But yes, that 1999-2002 drafting core of senior players were the match winners yesterday overall.

GC17 and West Sydney have made this worse as sides know they have to grab the best youth this and next year.
West Coast have done well in the past 2 years since winning the flag. 4 early picks inside the top 22 last year thanks to Judd leaving and now another 3 inside the top 20. I can see them bouncing back quickly in the next couple of years.
