Title: Rate a Tiger's year: Adam Pattison
Post by: one-eyed on October 29, 2008, 04:15:06 PM
Patto played in 18 of the first 19 games for the season (absent for the first Geelong game at the 'G) before missing the last 3 matches due to injury (where Cartledge came in for him).

How did we all rate Patto's year?

I thought his 2007 was great, but this year he took a back seat to Simmo and stagnated.

He doesn't win enough hit outs.

He's good around ground, kicking is a problem though.

I like him and hope he can work on using his bulk and brains to win ruck contests, or discover another 40cm to his leap.

5/10

I rated him a four, I think he went backwards compared to 2007.  I was surprised he played 18 games it seemed like less and I cant remember any games where he made an impression on me for a good standout game.

I don't know where he is going to end up, I think the best suited position for him is CHF leading up the ground and part time ruck back up.  I don't think he is a long term ruck option and I worry that he won't hold down a position in our best 22 if another genuine ruck option comes to the fore.

I don't think he went backwards but they need to give him a role where he plays more game time and gets a chance to have a consistent impact. He gets treated a bit like Mark Merenda in the 90s where he is barely on the ground so he is forced to try an have impact with very limited opportunity. Must do his head in.

I thought it was another solid year....

Very happy with his progress, I prefer his hitouts at times over Simmo's ..... at least we Adam they actually do go to advantage  :rollin

6.5/10

5.5/10 if I rate his year alone.  I think he was very much a victim of circumstances in that he had much reduced game time due to Simmonds coming back, right at the point in his career when he should have been getting more.  Having said that, I think he has upside and the dreaded 'potential' but my fear is still 'what position'.  He is good insurance to have until Graham and Putt either make it or break it but I don't know if his long term future is as a pure ruckman.  I still reckon he has the 'Benny Gale's' about him.

Patto should never have been our ruckman but only through necessity did he fall into the position. I worry that all the time he has spent in the position has damaged his development in the position he was initially recruited for which was CHF. Patto still seems a bit slow and lumbering to be anything other than a ruckman but unfortunately I just don't think he has the height, leap or strength to become our No. 2 ruck option let alone our No. 1 when Simmo steps aside.

Fortunately for Patto though (and probably unfortunately for the team) there is no one even challenging him for the ruck.

WE NEED RUCKMEN URGENTLY!!!! :juggle

To be fair to him, he was our number 1 ruckman for most of 2007, but in 2008 his figures were only slightly down on last year but with FAR less time on the ground.
