Meet the sweet sixteen
Mark Stevens and Sam Edmund | November 15, 2008

Our Herald Sun reporters deliver the lowdown on what your club needs in the national draft.

RICHMOND

Draft picks: 8, 26, 58, 70

What it needs

A ruckman to support veteran Troy Simmonds and the emerging Adam Pattison.

The return of Mark Coughlan and arrival of Adam Thomson from Port Adelaide will shore up a talented midfield already featuring Nathan Foley, Brett Deledio and Trent Cotchin.

Another big man should be the priority.

Perfect pick

SHAUN McKERNAN (Calder Cannons)

A 196cm clone of older brother Corey. Quick, agile, courageous and versatile enough to play multiple roles.

--------------------------
Herald-Sun's first round:

1. Melbourne - Watts
2. West Coast - Naitanui
3. Fremantle - Rich
4. Port Adel - Vickery
5. Essendon - Ziebell
6. Carlton - Hurley
7. Brisbane - Stephen Hill
8. Richmond - McKernan
9. North - Hartlett
10. Adelaide - Trengove
11. Coll'wood - Swift
12. Sydney - Blease
13. St Kilda - Yarran

While l agree Mckernan would be the most likely key position player we would take.
They have forgot about Sidebottom who is an excellent talent .

I wouldnt be taking either. McKernan has question marks over his kicking and Sidebottom is a forward pocket/flanker type only.

Richmond needs to pick from

Hamish Hartlett
Tyrone Vickery or take a chance on
Jackson Trengove

Just my opinion thats all.

why no trengove?

I think people have concerns about his injury history, as for me if Hartlett & Vickery are gone by 8, Id take Trengove because I think he can play at CHF/CHB.

They have forgot about Sidebottom who is an excellent talent .
Sidebottom's draft camp results have knocked him down a peg apparently.

My order of preference for pick 8:

1. Vickery (Rich of course if all 7 clubs ahead of us are that stupid not to grab him up)
2. Ziebell
3. Hartlett
4. McKernan

I would have Trengove in there too but reading around the traps I can't find any definitive answer as to how is now since the injury. Some reports say he ripped his hammy from the bone and there's question marks on him while others say it was only a chip off the bone at the base of the hammy and he'll be 100% as good as he was before the injury. What's the real story?  :-\

Sidebottom is not just a flanker type,l dont know if you have seen him play?
But lve seen him play some really good games in the midfield,he is very talented and has nearly no weakness, his pace is the only question mark, but he is certainly no turtle.
Mckernans kicking isnt that bad ,he can rush his kicking abit which is something he can easily fix.
To me he looks the type who could go into the afl, and be a dominant forward ,he quite quick for his height and weight, would be very hard to beat on a lead, and his second efforts are good.

Thanks Dereel it is good to hear from people who have seen some of the draftees go around.

Up North I wouldn't have a clue about them apart from media and forums.
