JAYDEN POST - Western Jets
DOB: 5/12/89 Ht: 196cm Wt: 86kg
"Jayden won our best and fairest and tested really well at the state screening. He ran three seconds for the 20 metres and ran a good beep test. He was by far our best player for the year and I would say that among the taller players in the TAC Cup he was the most consistent. He led the league in contested and uncontested marks, he's got a great work ethic and good pace for a player that size. Good skills both left and right and he's just an all round good kid. In our last game of the year in the final he had 35 possessions and took 18 marks -it was by far the best game I've seen anyone play this year in the TAC Cup. He's just an all-round good kid." - Western Jets coach Steve Kretiuk

Putting my rose-coloured glasses on I read Richo MkII. Ah well, we can only dream.
-
I would not have picked Jaydyn. Hes another CHB type. We have to many of these types. He was also a over aged kid in this draft. Cant say Im happy with it. But good luck to the kid. On a positive note, takes a good grab, has good dash, but we didnt need another CHB type IMHO.
MMM, picked him over Mckernan, hope we dont regret it!!!!!!!!!

Had a better a look at this kid, might be OK. Has courage, skills and speed for a big fellow.I hope he turns out to be good.
-
From the vision he is our replacement for Richo long-term. That contested mark up forward where he threw himself into the flying pack from the side without fear, stuck his arms up and marked the ball in flight was very young Richo-like. If he ends up half as good as Richo then I'll be happy.
When McKernan was still around at our second pick I thought we may go for him but we've obviously been attracted to Post by his raw athleticism and versatility for a tall and wanted him at 26 no matter what.
Welcome Wilbur :thumbsup
Rex is going to love him playing. The poor kid is going to end up being called Mr Ed ;D.

have never seen him play but i have seen Young Mckernan play and this will be another mistake made by the RFC at the draft table. Mckernan was ready and is a splitting image of his player on and off the field. Will be a gun.

I preferred McKernan too but I haven't seen enough of Post to judge him. Post had rocketed up the mock drafts only in the last couple of months.
I'm guessing McKernan slipped because he's too short to be a ruckman in today's AFL unlike his brother's time and so you had to judge whether he'll make it as a key forward.
-
Totally thought the same thing (Mckernan has bloodline) when the names were called out (per my previous posts) but please have a look at the attached and you might be pleasantly surprised. Post looks like he has good hands, courage, skills and speed.

stuff off.
I put it on so people can see what he plays like.

....... when Mckernan turns out to be a gun. Its in his blood.
His brother was one of the softest, most overrated footballers going around. Only had 2 standout seasons in very good teams - the rest were average at best (including his B & F year at Carlton - what a joke). As a 'premier' ruckman he averaged less than 10 hitouts over his career and his overall stats are no better than Simmonds who is oft maligned as being an average ruckman. If his genetic makeup means he plays like his brother then I'm very thankful we didn't take him.

Take it easy Tiger, we all realise we can't pick them all but what alot of us thought McKernan was worth a punt with our 2nd.
Looking ay Post in more detail IMO the jurys out! I'm a little more concerned with our last 2 picks Hislop and another reject!!! Anyone got any stats on sussess rates at Richmond of Rejects - Maybe FJ and CC or maybe Sheeds might have them!

Take it easy Tiger,
Take what easy? ???
we all realise we can't pick them all but what alot of us thought McKernan was worth a punt with our 2nd.
So? I was responding to a comment that McKernan would be "a gun" because of his breeding. And 27 picks before him suggests that many more learned and informed people than you and I thought differently.
Looking ay Post in more detail IMO the jurys out! I'm a little more concerned with our last 2 picks Hislop and another reject!!! Anyone got any stats on sussess rates at Richmond of Rejects - Maybe FJ and CC or maybe Sheeds might have them!
For crying out loud, why are these last 2 so bad? We have taken 2 kids with proven ability/potential that might (certainly in 1 case) need some work in attitudinal areas to bring out their best. So many on here are decrying this as the blunder of the century, forgetting that we have recent evidence of players needing a change of environment to become successful. Morton, Rodan, Tuck, Polak, anyone? It is more of a risk taking an untried kid in the draft than someone who you have some proof of their capacity to match it with the 'big boys'. For what it's worth I'm not sold on Hislop either but I'm not going to tear up my membership and jump off a cliff because of the decision. I understand the club's thinking, I understand the club's need and I trust the club's judgement. After all, how many recruiting blunders have the team of Cameron, Jackson and Wallace made so far? No point looking to the past for 'evidence' - we can only judge the latest incumbents in retrospect so until then - take it easy!
-
sooooooo let me get my head around the post & mckernan debate.
mckernan youtube video is based on highlights of him from 5-6different games (2.15mins worth)
posts youtube video is based on 1 GAME of highlights (3.10mins worth)
Post's package on 1 game ONLY clearly outshines mckernan
some people just have no idea about the game :banghead

I hope he gets the nickname of "The Mail Man" and not "Hit the" Welcome Jayden!

This kid has a great pair of hands and a decent motor. I expect him to play next year. From what I heard about draft night, he was one of our favoured picks for 26.

Here's an article on Post from Oct...
Williamstown’s Post stands tall in final countdown
Hobson Bay Leader
21 Oct 08 @ 04:18pm by Terry Mallinder
THE football season may be over, but the hard work is continuing for Jayden Post on and off the field.
With his sights set firmly on being picked up at next month’s AFL Draft, the 19-year-old from Altona is doing what he can to try to impress prospective clubs.
While remaining committed to training, in particular improving his strength and fitness, he has been interviewed by officials from several AFL clubs in recent weeks.
North Melbourne, Collingwood, Fremantle, Geelong, and West Coast just last Saturday, are among those who have sounded out the talented key position player who starred for the Western Jets this season.
“It’s more about you as a person, what makes you tick,” Post said of the interview process the clubs have been putting him through.
“There’s a lot of questions about your football, and your own stuff on it, but there’s also a lot about you as a person, and family to some extent.”
The Western Bulldogs (who he supports) are yet to call, but there is still time ahead of the November 29 National Draft.
“I’m spewing about it as well,” he said, half-joking.
“But, look, it doesn’t really phase me. I would be just as happy going to Fremantle as I would the Bulldogs. I just want to get picked up.”
Post, who at 194cm possesses amazing agility and spring, has done his chances no harm in the last month and a bit.
He starred in the Jets’ elimination final loss to eventual TAC Cup premier Murray, and performed well at the AFL’s State Screening Day earlier this month, before comfortably claiming the Jets best and fairest, the Barry Round Medal.
“A lot of interest (from AFL clubs) has been through the final,” Post said.
“But winning the best and fairest (showed) I was all right over the whole season, not just the final.
“I played nine games in my first year (2007) and didn’t get a vote, so it’s a bit of a turnaround as well.”
Post, who has shown he can play well at both ends of the ground, won with 206 votes, 41 ahead of the next best, Kyle Hartigan (165).
Matt Notman (160) was third and Mitchell Banner (155) fourth.
Post scored the maximum 30 votes in that final game against the Bushrangers.
“We had a pretty even team. There were up to five, six, seven guys who had a chance (to win the B&F;),” Post said.
A couple of days earlier, Post’s physical prowess was on display in the various tasks at the screening day, held in each state for those young players who missed out on being invited to Draft Camp in Canberra.
Watched on by AFL scouts, Post registered 14.2 in the beep test, “which I was pretty excited about,” he said. The figure would’ve placed him equal-seventh at the camp, as would his standing vertical leap mark of 69cm.
“I was pretty ecstatic,” he said. “What I was hoping to get was less than I actually got.”
Post, who is capable of taking a big pack mark as well as breaking tackles and breaking lines with his run, must now endure the agonisingly wait until the draft.
“I’m pretty excited, but at the same time I wish it wasn’t so long away I guess,” he said.
“I kind of want to know now.”

-
Now that I have read a bit about Post I am getting excited about this guy, the thing that sticks out to me is his contested marking. Also he seemed to come on in leaps and bounds this year which means he could have flown a bit under the radar.
-
.... all I have ever said in relation to Post is that he has good run, he takes a good mark, but in my opinion he'll become key defender and I would have preferred someone who can play as a key forward.
Hey Ramps, we can also look at this from a 'glass half full' perspective. What if you are right and Post does turn out to be a key defender? The team gets stronger and deeper and/or we then have someone from today's team not getting a game that becomes trade bait - win, win as I see it. Wouldn't be the first time that someone in the AFL becomes a champion in a position different to that for which they were originally recruited. Taller players who are strong overhead generally carry a lot of football currency, regardless of their playing position.
-
In essence, I never criticised the players, all I ever said was that I had a different opinion whilst making positive comments about there abilities.
Anyway to answer your post, I agree with you, someone will probably become trade bait. McGuane to Gold Coast may be on the cards if Post comes on in defence, but I sincerely hope, he fires up forward, because we need to find a new key forward.
Yep. And isn't good to actually have something 'meaty' to discuss. I hate the non-football season! ;D

Jayden first past the post
Hume Star
By Stuart Teather
2nd December 2008
WESTERN Jets over-aged footballer Jayden Post was the first player from his club to get picked up at the AFL draft on Saturday, with the lanky centre-half-back taken by Richmond in the second round.
Nineteen-year-old Post, who was a rock in the Jets’ backline all year in the TAC Cup, was grabbed at pick 26, before big-name talls such as Shaun McKernan and Jordan Roughead.
Richmond recruiting manager Francis Jackson said people should not be surprised he went so early.
“I think if people sat back and watched his performances - he won the Jets’ best and fairest, took 15 marks in their last semi-final, so I think a lot of clubs rated him highly, he had nine or 10 interviews so there was plenty of interest,” he said.
Indeed, Post was outstanding in the Jets’ semi-final match against Dandenong, where he picked up 33 possessions and took 15 marks in a best-on-ground display.
“It was outstanding, he played at both ends, but he was on our radar from the start of the year and we followed his progress,” Jackson said.
Jackson said the Tigers were considering him as a versatile key position player, and would not restrict him to centre-half-back.
“I think he can play both ends, he pinch-hit at both ends this year. With his ability to read the play and his overhead marking skills, he’s able to play at both ends.”
Jackson said the Tigers had focused on talls in this year’s draft, with the club using its first pick on Sandringham giant Tyrone Vickery.
“If everything goes to plan with the Gold Coast and West Sydney coming in, we’ve got our structure right with having those talls with Tyrone (Vickery) and Jayden ... just to get those quality talls in was very important,” he said.

Post is a tall, athletic key position player who can play at either end of the ground. He is an outstanding overhead mark, reads the game very well and is a renowned for his foot skills. He is also versatile, being able to play at either end of the field. Post was one of the leading lights for the Western Jets’ at TAC Cup level in 2008, and was rewarded by being named best and fairest. The Tigers believe Post was a bargain selection at pick 26, as they expected him to be snapped up earlier in the draft.

New posting gives career a giant kick
Brent Diamond | December 3, 2008
WESTERN Jet Jayden Post admits an AFL career was a distant dream this time last year.
Post, who turns 19 on Friday, was dropped from the Jets after round one last season but a move to centre half-back provided the launching pad to a startling 2008 that culminated in him winning the Barry Round Medal for the Jets' best and fairest.
"The team started winning a lot last year, so I found it hard to get back into the team," Post said.
"They brought me back in and threw me down back and from there I started playing some good footy and building on it each week."
The transformation for the Altona Juniors prodigy was complete when he was selected at No. 26 by Richmond in the national draft on Saturday.
Still, he thought he was in a dream on Saturday night when he was playing football at Williamstown beach in yellow and black stripes, just hours after hearing his name called out on the radio at his family home in Altona.
His mother Debra, father Brendan and sisters Carly and Emily were overjoyed to see him realise his AFL dream.
Debra had worked hard on her son's cooking skills in case he had to move away; Brendan gave him a job after finishing year 12 last year to help him afford Sunshine-based personal trainer Barry Conlan, who has helped turn Post into a pillar of strength.
The change has been reflected on the field. Post accumulated 35 disposals and 18 marks in a TAC Cup final.
Richmond recruiting manager Francis Jackson said the club was more impressed by Post having 50-odd more marks than any other player in the competition.
"Even though he was viewed as a 19-year-old by most clubs, we viewed him as an 18-year-old because he has played all the season at 18," he said.
"We thought he was a really talented tall, and it was important to get in a quality key-position player, given next year's draft is an eight-month draft with the change of birth dates and the concessions coming in."
The 194-centimetre, 88-kilogram athletic Post has been one of the most consistent talls in the competition, and can play at either end of the ground.
Post said he was relieved that he got his wish to stay in Victoria.
"I had a feeling I was going to go to Port Adelaide at one stage," he said.
"I wasn't anxious or anything; I don't really care about where I go, but there was also a bit of relief that Port didn't read out my name.
"I think now that I have been drafted by a Victorian side, I'm probably a lot happier to stay home. There won't be too much of a change for me because I can stay at home."

Hello people, i have actually known Jayden since he was born & I can tell you it is definately Jayden with an "E".
He is a really good kid, not sure how much he will play this year, but certainly has the potential to slot into a key possy some down the track.
Cheers.

Making every Post a winner
By Luke Holmesby
4:25 PM Fri 05 December, 2008
FOR JAYDEN Post, the idea of being an AFL player still feels like a dream and not a reality.
Even after his first week at his new club Richmond, Post admits it feels surreal to be a part of an AFL set-up – so much so that he could barely speak when he met Tiger star Matthew Richardson upon arriving at Punt Rd.
"He shook my hand and said 'G'day'. I think I mumbled something to him but I don't know if it was audible," Post said.
"I've watched him since I was able to follow football so it was a pretty special moment to meet the big guy."
Post said he admired Richardson's career and looked up to him as a shining example.
"I think Richo's pretty maligned. I don't think people realise how hard he works and how much of his heart and soul is in the club. He is a role model and shows you how hard you have to work to be one of the best players in the competition," Post said.
Post was taken with pick 26 by the Tigers in last week's NAB AFL Draft after an impressive year for the Western Jets in the TAC Cup.
He said he had a hunch he would be heading to Tigerland but was considering the possibility he may have had to move from Victoria.
"I read a lot of the phantom drafts and they all had me going to Richmond," he said.
"I spoke to Port Adelaide on Thursday night and they dropped a lot of hints to say I would be going there. That was the word on draft morning as well but I think when (Jackson) Trengove slipped they went for him instead."
Post starred as a defensive defender this year in the TAC Cup and is just as capable at the other end of the ground.
But he knows better than anyone that he will have to work hard to crack a game in the seniors.
"There are a lot of young blokes on the list who are developing key forwards and backmen so there is going to be a lot of competition around the club to get spots on the field in key posts," he said.
"I hope to play next year, if not in the NAB Cup then hopefully get a game later on in the year. I just want to make the right impressions at the moment."

Postie was on SEN with KB before midday:
* He supported the Doggies growing up. Chris Grant was his favourite player.
* Mentioned how he was dropped from the Jets after his first game while playing up forward. When he was promoted back into the Jets line-up he played in defence at CHB and started playing some good footy against better opponents which built up his confidence and improved his reading of the play. He didn't play against Jack Watts though.
* He's enjoying preseason so far. Been training with the main squad but a reduced workload than the older blokes as expected for a new draftee. He said everyone is very supportive.
* He is hoping to play every game next year with Coburg then maybe crack a debut later on in the year. He said he needs to bulk up.
* He was fairly confident of being drafted.
* He said he's wasn't fussed where he plays - forward or back - just happy to get a game.
* KB asked him about Cousins but Postie said he's just concentrating on what he needs to do.

Post finds role model in Richo
richmondfc.com.au
By Chris Pike
Mon 16 February, 2009
TEENAGE tall Jayden Post played his first game in Tigers colours on Sunday and was left in awe of the performance of veteran Matthew Richardson.
The Richmond legend’s two late goals helped snatch a win for the Tigers over Fremantle, but Post said it was not the first time the 33-year-old had inspired him since being selected at No. 26 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.
"Richo is just unbelievable,” Post said. “He's a stuff athletically, a stuff footballer and a good bloke as well.
“He's almost the perfect man, I reckon.”
Attempts to emulate his mentor have raised a few eyebrows at the club, but Post has not been deterred by some of the jibes that have come his way.
“In the first couple of sessions, I was following him around a bit and even the boys were getting stuck into me.
“But when you have the best there why not make the most of it?"
Hailing from Altona and playing with the Western Jets, Post is not dissimilar to Richardson in size and athleticism. The 19-year-old is now aiming to build his aerobic capacity in a bid to bring more versatility to his game.
"Hopefully, if I can build an engine similar to Richo's I can have a similar role to him,” Post said.
The young key position prospect came on as a substitute for Richard Tambling in the second quarter, and although his game time was limited, Post was invigorated by the experience.
"It was faster than anything I've ever played before, but it was just good to get out there and the best thing was that we won. It doesn’t matter how much ground time I got, it was just good to have that first run out there and see what it was like," he said.
Post, along with the other Richmond draftees, did not complete full pre-season training, something he found a little difficult to deal with.
"The fitness guys held us young blokes back a bit. It was a little bit frustrating at times because I felt I could do all the work, but our bodies aren’t used to the intensity and volume so they slowly build you up.
"In saying that, I've never been fitter or stronger and haven’t had any injury troubles ... I've set myself to try to make my debut during the year, but I also listen to what the coaches say and what they think I need to improve."

I have grand visions of the future with Post and Jack running amok around our CHF forward line.
Not too bad a start from Jayden, it's a shame he dropped that first mark that came his way but it didn't look to hurt his confidence.

The boy looked good and went about his business well. :clapping
Looking forward to him playing up on the forward line. :thumbsup

Going to play a shedload of football for us.
Fantastic selection Francis. :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

Sounds like Postie isn't too far away either from a chance of a debut going by Rawlings' report in EOTT:
"Played in a variety of positions and was serviceable throughout. Had 21 possessions, with four inside 50s. Is learning a lot about the game."

Get him in there asap :thumbsup

Firstly I didn't read the EOTT review as it meaning he isn't too far from debuting - but that's just my take
IMHO he is a fair way off. I've watched him the last 2 weeks. Thought he was better against Casey than the Bullants
His contested marking is superb but disposal by foot needs to improve

If Riewoldt under performs over the next two weeks he will surely be looked at.
There are/will be vacancies in our forward line for talls and I reckon get him in there.

Although Post can play forward and the club has said we would play him up there when we drafted him, he really made an impression in U18s as a tall defender who can take a contested mark (took a ridiculous number of marks in a game once which grabbed recruiters attention) and he can run and rebound.
Fair enough WP as you've seen Postie play live at Coburg in actual games. I just saw those stats and went geez that's impressive. Hopefully he keeps this form up tomorrow when the VFL season starts.
