Title: Who will start 'full forward' most this season?
Post by: Judge Roughneck on December 08, 2008, 06:03:04 PM
Who do you expect to be in the goal square come round 1?

Who will be leading out? Come round 22?

I expect Jack to be allowed develop CHF. Our best two options are Deledio & Richo, but each will spend most of the time on the ball next season one would assume, with only stints in the forward line, similar to the end of last season.

 - Hughes? Is still quite young and has shown as much as any KPF in his draft. However cannot bend over, spends large time of the game doing nothing, is a pretty boy with clean knees. If we are going to challage for top 4 maybe he is too raw still next season, or simply not good enough?
 - Schultz? Seems to be good enough for AFL but not yet done enough as a forward, even with Richo not there. Best football was CHB/back pocket, but we have heaps of tall backs now whos spot he is will be taking.
 - Post? Too young? Hughes mk2?
 - Vickery? Too young? rated top 5 in his draft poll by some as ruckman/tall forward? Expect him not to be ready.
 - Putt? Cant even get a game for Coburg yet
 - Simmonds? Plays well as a forward. Strong, fast (for big man) and nice kick. Might get a few more years out of his body if we play him forward. Shame we don't really have a 2nd ruckman yet - Cartledge rubbish, Grahama/Putt not up to it, Vickery too young, Patto bit unco.
 - Patto? too unco to be big forward.

At least we have many young promising options now who are developing. However someone needs to put thier hand up.

Jack Riewoldt needs to have big season.

The development of Pattison will have a big influence also I reckon.

Hughes I would hope. Whether he can remain there is yet to be seen..

Cleve Hughes

Good question and I dont know the answer.

Obviously we badly need Hughes to step up and is the type of player we need at FF.  However while I am hoping he can do it I am not too sure if he will.

Richo will be there for large chunks of time in the game when he isn't playing his midfield role.  I think Lids will be in the guts most of the time this year although I reckon he is as good as weve got at the moment for a FF.

It would be good if Schulz staked a claim for it

I agree with the others - Cleve will be given the first 5/6 games to show something or TW may have his hand forced and try Schulz or, I believe, even Vickery. Lids and Richo will be played in the midfield this year but Lids may be moved there if Hislop and Thomson suddenly step up.

The first few games will tell the tale

Would be good. However we have said the same thing the last 4-5 years and the lad is yet to do it.

But with (yet another) pre-season under his belt, Richo out of his way and the smart Jack @ CHF he will have a better go this season.

Brave and good kick, now mid 20s. All the tools are there. I am doubtful thou..

Lets hope he kicks alot of goals so I can do German celebrations.

I think Schultz is better in defence.

Plays better for Coburg actually.

What about Wil Thursfeild. He has played a lot in the back line. And he is getting better as he gets older.

Hughes will be given first go at it you would think. We could try Vickery at some point. How about McGuane especially if Rance comes on quickly. McGuane has played forward before

We also need to get Graham in and find out if he is capable or not. If this does happen then it may see Simmo Patto and Graham rotating Ruck FF and thru the bench

Indeed.

Problem is Thursfeild, Moore, McGaune & Rance are better in defence also

I would go with Hughes and give him a really good run at it - you know, say at least 4-5 weeks

I believe for Cleve to develop into a competent FF he needs as a minimum to be in the side for at least 8-10 games regardless of result. He will have a breakout game much like he did against Port this year and this time things will go according to the script. :pray

I agree with WP and TB. Stick Clever at FF and tell him he'll be there for a number of weeks to build up his confidence and speed up his development.

I can also see Joel spending more time up forward. As we know from his time in defence he can play tall and is tall enough to be a FF.

If Cuz comes to Punt Rd and recaptures a hint of his old form and Richo despite his mobility you'd think would be slowing down sooner or later. Stick him in the square and that lace out footy he has craved all his career he'd think his Christmases will have come all at once. Take into account he's number 1 in the league in Contested marks and potentially he could take 10-15 marks a game which injury free equates to close to 300 marks a season inside the forward 50 during the home and away season. A centurion goalkicker. :thumbsup

I personally would love to see Richo continue with the way he was last year.
And if Cousins is playing he could deliver it to Sarge if this was the case.

Richo is harder to contain on the wing IMHO.

We're better off developing a forward structure for the long-term and playing Richo where he is almost ipossible to match up on, even if it means others kicking the goals.
