Gilligan has lived in Perth for two years and represented Claremont in the WAFL Colts competition. Gilligan is originally from Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberleys and has been training at the club for the last two weeks. He kicked 30 goals for Claremont in a midfield/forward role in 2008.

Playful cub's winning ways

RICHMOND had to send out a search party to find young rookie Alroy Gilligan after losing his whereabouts in the North West Cape.
It took three days to locate him at Fitzroy Crossing before Alroy made the long journey to Punt Rd.
But the 18-year-old Aboriginal boy has endeared himself to all at Tigerland with his honesty and charm.
Triple premiership player Craig McRae was doing some kick-ins with him the other day when Gilligan innocently observed: "Good kick, brother. Did you play?''
And everyone was in fits when ruck coach Damian Monkhorst met Gilligan at a rookie night. Monky found a soul-mate when he asked Gilligan where he was from. Gilligan said Fitzroy Crossing and a delighted Monky replied: "I'm from Fitzroy too.''

4. ALROY GILLIGAN
(Yiyili in the Kimberley region)
Recruited from: Claremont (WA)
To: Richmond
Debut: yet to play
Gilligan, a Tigers rookie, is from the tiny community of Yiyili in the Kimberley, 170 kilometres south-east of Fitzroy Crossing and 130kms west of Halls Creek. To get home, he must fly from Melbourne to Perth, then fly to Broome, catch a bus for several hours to Fitzroy Crossing and then get driven home. The trip can take more than 15 hours.
"It's in the middle of nowhere and it's pretty dry, it's mainly all rocks but there are a few creeks and billabongs. I used to go to the springs and have a dip to cool off. It was mainly red dirt. That's why you can see a bit of red in my hair, it's from all the dirt I think! I went to school in a bigger community that was 30 or 40 kilometres from where I lived, but I loved being out in the bush, being a bush kid. I didn't like school so I used to wag and go down to the creek, go walkabout or go hunting. I used to have fun and at the end of the day I'd get a good whack over my head from my grandmother for not going to school."
Gillligan was raised mostly by his grandmother in his tiny community.
There were only six or seven houses where I lived. We still have our ceremonies and traditions and when I go home I just give footy a rest and enjoy my Aboriginal side of things. You could say that it is two different worlds, living in Melbourne and having to go home and speak another language. I get a bit lost when I go home now, trying to understand stuff, but I usually ask my grandfather what people are saying and then I can remember. Living in Melbourne I've lost a bit of my language which is pretty hard, but I'm lucky because my grandmother was never taken to the mission. They didn't know her date of birth because she was born in the bush and grew up in the bush, so I'm lucky that she wasn't taken away and that she carried the culture on."
Gilligan moved to Perth at age 15, to study at Clontarf College alongside Paddy Ryder, Leroy Jetta, Brad idiot, Nathan Krakouer and others.
"They're a few years older than me but they showed me what you can do if you put your mind into it and have that ability to push yourself. It was a big change and it was hard for me, but I had support from the other boys at school with me. I didn't know where to go or how to catch transport, so I used to end up following everyone else, up the back. In Melbourne it's more different and a big move from Perth. I'm staying with Richard Tambling's mother-in-law, Jackie, in Thornbury. If I need information for training I usually ring Richard and ask him what's on tomorrow. Richard has been the big leader in my AFL career so far."
Settling into Richmond has taken time too.
"I had to adapt to training and the program we do. I found it pretty difficult but I'm used to it now. I've been playing pretty good for Coburg lately, just trying to hit my form there and hopefully put my hand up sometime next year to play an AFL game. Back home the footy was pretty fast and flashy; there are bigger bodies down here so I have to dance around them and put on a few shows for the crowd. I miss being around my mob and the Aboriginal people because it was hard in the early days to feel comfortable talking to someone. It's going really good now, though. I want to set a standard and show some of the other boys back home that it's not just me, they can do it too."

My joy, the magic of the red-dirt footballer

The clubs have changed too. As recently as the 1990s a bush kid like Liam Jurrah could not have survived and would not have been welcomed into an AFL club environment. Shy kids from remote Kimberley communities such as Yiyili and Looma would not have been seen on the rookie lists. But they are there now: Alroy Gilligan at Richmond, and Lewis Broome at the Eagles.
Aussie rules did not exist in Fitzroy Crossing when I was first there in the late 1970s. A rather haphazard basketball competition was the only sport being played. Today, it is impossible to imagine Fitzroy without footy. Every Saturday in season, the buses and cars full of players and supporters roll in from all of the outlying communities. The action is fast and furious, and the fans are loud and proud. Footy has become a hugely positive force in this Kimberley community, which has serious problems.
Grand final day is without doubt the biggest social event of the year. In 2006 the Yiyili Power upset the Bunuba Magpies, with a young Alroy Gilligan in the team. Now that he has found his way to Richmond, via Clontarf and Claremont, Yiyili has rebranded. They now play as the Yiyili Tigers.

I don't think many people realise just how much football means to many of these communities. I believe it is this fact rather than some self indulgence that saw Relton Roberts name himself the Ngandi Storm in lieu of the the barrunga bullet, a name given to him by others originally.

What's going on with him? Hasn't been named in the squad.

I read that he was dealing with some personal stuff back in WA at home or something to that effect over around the preseason time and that was all.

Thanks to duncan on Y&B....
Alroy is back training. I saw Richie Tambling on the Marngrook Footy Show say that Alroy had returned, and he thought he was playing for Coburg this weekend. I don't think he is, as they probably thought he needed to train more.

i think thats a really good sign, the kid being aboriginal may have thought about staying home and not coming back well done to Alroy - that hes come back is a very good sign, atleast his commited to his career. Good luck to him.
