Colin Wisbey's top 40 rankings

In response to those who have emailed me asking for my rankings, here they are. Hope that suffices as I'm unable to find the time to respond to the number of emails I've received. To those people who have either posted or emailed requests for various non Pies/WCE profiles, I'll post just a few (of my choice) here over roughly the next week but I can't satisfy all requests due to time constraints and not wanting my profiles to take up too much space at the expense of other threads. For the same reason, I'm staggering the Pies/WCE profiles over this week.

Note that this year, I excluded from my top 40 most players I would not draft myself (even some players I expected to get drafted relatively early). This was a year in which I doubt even the top 20 from any club would be very similar to the top 20 from any other club. With the odd exception, most kids I ranked earlier than I expected them to go were there mainly because of attractive decison-making / usage. Some were ranked early based on upside compared to the alternatives. Most of the "touted" draftees who didn't make my top 40 or so were kids I viewed as being dodgy decison-makers / users and/or kids for whom I struggled to identify an AFL role they might be capable of "owning".

It looks like at first glance Wisbey has ranked them mainly in terms of potential upside although he has Trengove very low if that was the case. No Phil Davis, Lewis Johnston or Ayce Cordy who all ended up firsr round picks. No Postie either but we took him early because of the gap to our next pick.

Wisbey's longer profiles were/are a good read just from the massive detail he puts in them even if you thought some of his views were off the mark. Like Weaver their opinions were different to the norm which made them interesting to read. A real shame a few idiots on BF spoiled it for everyone else by harrassing Wisbey non stop (one even stalked him) and he no longer publishes them on the web except for the Collingwood draftees.

MCKERNAN will come back to bite us IMO

He has the blood lines and was highly rated.

Why we didn't pick still baffles me

Wisbey is just like any other talent scout, he gets his fair share wrong.

Read his review on JON.

JON would've been another example of putting too much emphasis on potential upside and athleticism over natural football ability. Poor JON should never have been a top 10 pick  :-\. A rookie at best instead.

I'm guessing we along with a few clubs saw him as a 'tweener'. Too short to become a modern day AFL ruckman and behind other kids in terms of a key forward. Some people were also critical of his kicking although when I saw him play in the U18 champs it looked okay for a tall.

He has the blood lines ........

Filling our list with horses now are we?  What an irrelevant statement.  So did Matthew Grieg, so did Nick Jewell, so did Sean Bowden, so did Andrew Krakoeur, so did Tom Roach, etc etc etc.  Means 2 parts of 5 eighths of FA.  A very small percentage of ex-AFL players have sons that also make it.

What's the percentage in terms of brothers  ;).

Lids has a brother as we know who played U18 TAC Cup footy but didn't make it. So did Jack IIRC. Cornes, Burgoynes, Selwoods, Tucks and maybe the Morton in the near future are the only brothers playing AFL at a decent level or higher.

Absolutely no difference whether its a son, brother, cousin, nephew etc.  Relationships mean nothing, no guarantee of success, never has, never will.  Just means that someone in the family was a good footballer.  What about the theory ("bloodline") that says he will be a good footballer because no-one in his family has been yet - means he is 'due'?  That one is more believable stats-wise!

i wouldn't even use the name Mckernan in the same breath as those duds Krackour and Roach. Arguably, The most pathetic weak footballers to grace our club

Nick Jewell is excused

McKernan Snr (the source of this much vaunted "bloodline") was just as pathetic and useless for much of his career too.

I wasn't disagreeing with you smokey. Just subtly saying Shaun is Corey's much younger brother hence the wink. And yep after Corey's first 5 years and being rubbed out for the Brownlow his career died.

Yeah MT, knew that.  I just couldn't resist having another dig at the original comment re: "bloodlines".  Never been a more irrelevant factor in deciding the worth of a potential draftee.

Probably the Hirds are the exception that proves the rule.

Yeah, certainly would never say it doesn't happen - there are quite a few examples - Abletts, Hirds, Danihers, etc but as you say they are they exception and the chances of it happening are not worth basing a draft pick on.

breeding may produce skills and body shape  but upbringing creates attitude and personal resolve
