Title: Mind Numbing, Overused and Abused Footy Expressions
Post by: one-eyed on January 01, 2009, 08:37:07 PM
What cliches and expressions from players, coaches, club and AFL officials, footy journos and commentators annoy the hell out of you?

At the end of the day....the best team on the day.... got the four points....as they take it one week at a time....and are not afraid to enter into a dour struggle....and match it against their more fancied opponents.....even though the scoreboard was not a true indication of the game!

"leg speed"

Until the "Gladiators" hand-bike becomes available in AFL matches this is tautology.

Quarterback
Big game coming up this weekend (when isn't it)
(against side coming off poor game) they are better than what they showed last week.

Andrew Maher is a repeat offender, esp
-last roll of the dice
-backs against the wall

"Always recieves the attention of the opposition", don't all players?
and "love to have him beside me in the trenches" ive never been to war but analogies with war and footy peeve me!
League is shocking especially during the origin, "these great warriors", "its a war out there", and such and such is "the general".

'110%'

stuffen hate that too Magic.

It's probably the most ludicrous one of all - ludicrous because the people that say it,believe it.

"Pigskin"

"What a big week it's been in football"

In reference to draft potential assessment

"has that X factor"
Translated as soft outside player who often goes missing and has a 9/10 chance of being a dud lol. Footy speak equivalent to "first home-buyers paradise". Both ring alarms bells to stay away.

What about when recruiters say "he's a bit one paced" may as well say cannot break out of a jog.

"He's a good kick for goal" (player shanks it and misses)

Unintentional contact, negligent contact, reckless contact, etc ..... and all those other grey tribunal categories.

5 minute warning when one side is 10 goals up.

This isn't so much of a cliche as it was a catch cry of Greg Miller's whenever we drafted a player "We were delighted he was still available at pick ...." The only time I didn't hear him say it was when we picked up Lids!

12 point turnaround. (How often have we heard that over the past few years :banghead)
Breakout year
Clanger
Pull out all the stops
Leather poisoning
Flying under the radar
Need to lift
Big game player
At the Coal face
Game of inches
Last ditch effort
It was not out day/night
We turned up or didn't turn up to play
We had our chances
