Wallace poaching, say Dogs
By Stephen Rielly
September 15, 2004
The uneasy relationship that has existed between Terry Wallace and his former club, the Western Bulldogs, is threatening to become acrimonious, with the Dogs accusing the Richmond coach of mounting a raid on their players and staff.
The suspicion of a poaching campaign was confirmed in the minds of Bulldog staff last week when contracted midfielder Lindsay Gilbee informed the club he wanted to be traded, preferably to the Tigers.
Gilbee's demand, which has been refused, followed strong suggestions of an earlier approach to Patrick Bowden, the uncontracted younger brother of Richmond's Joel Bowden, more of which may be known today.
It is understood Bowden's agent, Paul Connors, will meet with Bulldog recruiting manager Scott Clayton this morning.
Clayton received an inquiry of his own from Wallace, as did the man who succeeded him as Bulldog coach at the end of 2002, Peter Rohde, who was sacked to make way for Rodney Eade before the season was out.
One of Eade's assistant coaches, Chris Bond, a fortnight ago declined an offer to cross to Punt Road. All three worked alongside the new Richmond coach at Whitten Oval.
Eade, who met with Gilbee yesterday and last week spoke with Bowden about Richmond's interest, said yesterday there was a clear pattern that was "bemusing".
"I've spoken to the players and the coaches involved. I suppose all is fair in love and war but it's interesting that Terry wants to talk to a lot of Bulldogs people, including staff," Eade said.
"We'll do everything within our power to keep those we want to keep, so that's fine. We know what's happening."
Gilbee, 23, is contracted for one more season and could leave the Dogs only if they chose to trade him, something they opted not to do at the end of 2003 when Essendon and Collingwood expressed interest in dealing for the midfielder.
Unlike Bowden, who could find his way to the Tigers via a trade or the pre-season draft in which Richmond holds first pick, Gilbee cannot simply walk out on the club for which he has played 51 games. He played 12 games this year.
"I spoke with Lindsay again today and told him again that he is absolutely required and we won't be trading him. He understands that," Eade said.
Wallace did not return calls yesterday but Bowden, who has played 42 games in four seasons, the first of those under Wallace, has indicated that playing alongside his brother is an ambition.
This time last year he chose to sign a one-year deal and as a relatively cheap and young potential key forward he is accessible to a Richmond that is cash-strapped this year, unlike last when it launched an expensive and successful bid for Nathan Brown.
It is understood that Daniel Cross and Sam Power are also out of contract at Whitten Oval.

Lindsay Gilbee
Height 180cm
Weight: 80kg
Recruited From: Coldstream/Eastern U18
Debut: 2001
Date of Birth: 8 July 1981 (23)
ABOUT (2003)
His start to the season was delayed until round five due to a hamstring injury and he then struggled for consistency in 14 senior appearances. Posted 20 or more touches in three out of four games but failed to make a similar impact in the second half of the season and ended the year in the VFL. A regular senior berth beckons if the skilled and speedy youngster can strike form in 2004.

Height 191cm
Weight: 91kg
Recruited From: Rovers (NT)
Debut: 2001
Date of Birth: 4 August 1981 (23)
ABOUT (2003)
Continues his steady development as a key forward with 22 goals from 17 appearances in 2003, although he managed just six goals in the second half of the season. Dropped back to the VFL late in the year, he responded with a seven-goal haul for Werribee in the finals. Like his older brother Joel at Richmond, he possesses a penetrating kick and, with the departure of Nathan Brown, has the opportunity to make his mark as a leading goalkicker.

Its Miller Time :cheers

Not so sure on Gilbee. He's a flanker type who admittedly does have pace. I haven't watched him closely enough to judge his skill level. He did have a pretty good end to the year but has been inconsistent at the Dogs before that. If he's a right footer (I can't remember) then maybe a straigtht swap for left-footer Chaffey.
Patrick is slightly taller than Joel. IMO Patrick's also been inconsistent and reminds me of Joel before round 6 in that he has natural ability but looks laconical playing footy and appeas to lack urgency. Can we put up with two Bowdens in the one side ;D.
At 23 you would want these guys to now be starting to hit their straps.
I would prefer stuff Harris (22, 194cm, 94kg) as part of deal with the dogs :thumbsup.
-
Patrick will be a good player, only young. TWO Bowdens in one team is a worry though. Can you imagine them both ducking there head at the same time :lol

Reported in the papers last week that Harris signed a contract extension to the end of 2007. I think this means he cannot be traded this year

Nice.....I thought the same thing. One is bad enough......
Patrick Bowden....no thanks......Gilbee Ill consider for the fact that WE ARE SLOW, and a burst of speed may be a help, but another Bowden....please god no.
-
It is understood that Daniel Cross and Sam Power are also out of contract at Whitten Oval.
Sam Power can play. Still very young also but showed he has the goods early this season with some great performances off half back.
Certainly one to look at.
By the way, i love Greg Miller.
Combined with Wallace they would be two of the shiftiest blokes going around, and i LOVE it!!!!
-
Gilbee would be a good get. perhaps a swap for Zantuck.
You will find that Pat Bowden will end up at the tiges via the PSD. He will be a good player IMO.
-
Bring on the draft, peripheral hacks are of no interest. Gilbee, Bowden etc will only ever be bit-part players at best.
Getting rid of Zantuck is reward enough.
-
Players like Gilbee and Bowden wont really help us win a flag...they are imho squad players at best! Miller and Wallace need to do better than that if this trade period is to be considered a success!
-
You have to start somewhere and we can't expect to re-build the team over night. Getting players who are at least a step up from the ones that we have de-listed over the last two seasons will at least help us to be competitive and is a step in the right direction.
-
lets put this into perspective shall we?
Gilbee & P.Bowden > than Blumfield & Nicholls
;D
our list will have improved 100% just on these 2 inclusions alone!

LMA OOOO @ THe "greater than" sign - >
-
If we can get these 2 without losing any draft picks then it's a good move.
LMAO also at the greater than sign. How do you do a greater than and equal to sign ?
-
LOL @ my attempt to simplify the Richmond Football Club thought process
;D
-
Guys, you are forgetting one thing. Both want to come and play for the Tigers.
I would rather a Giblee and a P Bowden who would put it on the line for the Tigers, than some of those insipid performances I saw this year.
Rodan for Giblee?
-
They just had Rodney Eade on Ch 10 news. He said the Dogs want to keep Gilbee and said he's contracted (they might try to play hard because we have Wallace). But he also admitted we've approached Patrick Bowden. He seemed very unconfident keeping Patrick as he's uncontracted.

Wallace admits approaching Bulldog Bowden

Richmond coach Terry Wallace last night admitted he had approached Patrick Bowden, brother of the club's 2004 best and fairest Joel, in an attempt to lure him to Punt Road.
"He's an uncontracted player," Wallace said last night on the Fox Footy Channel's White Line Fever.
"He missed out on their side . . . when they went up to Darwin (to play Port Adelaide in round 20) - that's where his family's from. His parents are obviously strong Richmond people, with his father playing for the club. So we spoke to him, but I don't think we'd be the only ones that had spoken to him."
Bowden, whose father was a member of the 1969 Richmond premiership team, met Wallace after he was dropped from the Bulldogs team that played Port in Darwin.
Bowden is out of contract and is believed to have gone north to spend time with his family.
His manager, Paul Connors, yesterday would not comment on Bowden, although he confirmed that he had met Bulldogs recruiting manager Scott Clayton yesterday morning. Bowden is not expected to decide whether to stay at Whitten Oval for at least a couple of weeks.
A source close to Bowden confirmed yesterday that the 23-year-old forward was extremely disappointed after being dropped for the Darwin game, but he believed Bowden wanted to remain at least for the short term.

Patrick a tiger, might just happen.
If they want Rodan they can have him I say !

Wow :o
Terry's speaking to uncontracted players - that's disgusting ;D

Rodan for Bowden Jnr? In the words of Vinnie Mac........NO CHANCE, thats what you got.

If the Dogs don't accept some type of deal then we can pick him in the PSD for nothing.

Yes I understand, I should have re-phrased that I would prefer to keep Roder than get Bowden....
If he chooses to go the PSD way, I would like to think that we dont use our early picks on him.
