Next up is Deano.
What are your expectations for Polo in 2009 and what would be a good year for him?
Career so far:
Games Disp. Marks Tackles G.B
2006: 17 15.4 6.4 2.4 6.6
2007: 8 14.6 4.8 2.0 1.1
2008: 6 15.4 4.0 1.8 0.4

I think hes been very disappointing so far, mind you hes not alone in that boat ... if he plays 10 games hes had a good season, if he plays less than 6 he'll probably be gone at the end of 2009.
-
I don't know where he sits contractually but if he is in his last year then he would need to play at least 15+ games to survive. Having said that, I think he has a lot of ability and if he gets his 'planets to align' it will make him a regular 22 player. His challenge is to remain fit enough and committed enough.
-
Well he is an interesting one, unlike most of other young batch Dean is one player whose performance has been declining over the years.
I am not sure exactly where he fits in the side, I think most likely as a tagging or run with midfielder. This position is fairly open ATM IMO with Daniel Jackson probably ahead at this stage but the position is far from settled.
You would think he would have to play 75% of the games next year and perform adequately or he may be shopped around. I think he is contracted for 2009 and 2010 but not certain on that.

Looking at the Foxtel games of the last week or so Polo will be very much up against it this year.
He is a one-paced "inside / run-with" midfielder with sub-standard foots skills masquerading & playing on the outside flanks dishing off handballs 1/2 a second behind the running player.
No real role for Dean in a RFC finals side.
Injury-prone Depth player at best.
-
DT, I think that view is a little harsh although it is fair to say that the gap between his best and worst footy would be almost the biggest on our list.
He is in that large group of mids that have not yet established themselves in the team which includes Jackson, Edwards, Connnors, Collins and now Hislop and Thomson.
He was not given a decent run by the coach compared to some in that group and if he doesn't stay beyond 2009 will probably end up as a rookie in a team like Collingwood.

Injury-prone Depth player at best.
I remember his shoulder popping out in 2007 which he had the reco for at the end of that season. Can't recall any other injuries without being reminded.
What other injuries has he had that make him injury-prone?

No Fish, no other injuries...
Even TW said at the AGM that shoulder recos are like knee recos in that it can take a good 12 months for a player to get confidence back in the shoulder. He said that is what happened in 2008 with Polo. He also said he (Polo) had been one of the leading trainers up until Xmas....
I think he is in our best 22.
I would suggest that people have a look at the round 20 game against Hawthorn and watch his game against Bateman - one of his best. Especially watch for his spoil of the Crawford handball that resulted in Dean giving off a handball to Lids that got us a much needed goal in the final qtr.
His reward for that game was to be dropped the following week :P

I don't need to see the game again to remember the game or that spoil. A view into the future. Maybe. But he can be infuriating. Against the Eagles he had a shot for goal screwing over his shoulder when there were 2 teammates clear. He missed and both teammates kept flapping their arms after he missed.
-
After that debut against the Bombers, the world was his oyster. Ralph Lauren named a fragrance after him, Volkswagon manufactured a vehicle in his honour.
Things went downhill from there.
I think he is in our best 22. He has footy smarts, is a great tackler and seems to make good decisions. I'd like to see him as our run with player.
-
After the trades and recuriting this off season I think he will struggle to get games. There is now a large number of guys trying to get midfield spots and competition will be fierce. This is a good thing offcource for the club but some guys will miss out and Dean might just be one of them.

Yep WP that was an odd decision to drop him based on his onfield performance.
Deano was allegedly given the riot act when he sat down with Terry straight after last season. Hopefully he's got his act together now otherwise he'll be gone at the end of the year. If he has got his act together I'd like to see him tried in a back pocket.

I think Polo's had the kick up the bum he needed.
With plenty of pressure on his position, I think he'll surprise a few in '09.
I am expecting a break out season.

Dean Polo - 2009 expectations?
None - Don't rate him. Too slow and too many others ahead of him.

LOL Tiga, at least you wont be let down, any decent performances will be a plus.
I wonder if that's how Melbourne supporters feel going into 2009?
