Lads do any of you know where I could get an online or any other map of the old club zones or failing that a detailed list of the areas?

No map but a rough guide:
Carlton: Carlton, Northeast suburbs, Central Victoria (Bendigo)
Coll'wood: Collingwood, Northern suburbs (modern Northern Knights), Southwest Victoria (Warrnambool)
Essendon: Northwest suburbs (Essendon, Keilor), Eastern suburbs (Ringwood), Central-west Victoria (Horsham, Mallee)
Fitzroy: Fitzroy, Southwest Victoria (Colac)
Footscray: Western suburbs, Gippsland
Geelong: Greater Geelong, Riverina
Hawthorn: Hawthorn, Southeast suburbs (Narrewarren/Berwick), Western Gippsland. I think they had Assumption College (Kilmore) too.
North Melb: Northern suburbs, Murray
Melbourne: Inner-city Melbourne, Murray (Kyabram)
Richmond: Richmond, Southeast suburbs (Waverley), Sunraysia (Mildura)
St Kilda: Bayside Melbourne, Ballarat region (Bungeree lol).
South Melb: South Melbourne, Southeast suburbs (Oakleigh, Noble Park), Northeast Victoria

I've got a vague recollection that one of the criteria was that each club had to have at least one major metropolitan or country league in it's zone areas. But I could easily be wrong - age does that! :-[

Tough to recruit from the desert.

Makes you wonder what sort of logic they used to formulate the country zones. Apparently they were to be rotated every 5 years but that never happened.
The South Melbourne zone is interesting.
Demographically the metro zones appear to make more sense. I think they were based on the old council boundaries.
Both these maps are out of a book by Bob Stewart called 'The Australian Football Business', 1983, Kangaroo Press.

Great get atiger and welcome to OER :cheers.
Someone here mentioned that possibly the country zones were linked to a major country league. Ovens-Murray FL with North, Hampden FL with Fitzroy, etc. Yep they were meant to be rotated but it never happened and Richmond wasn't popular with the VFL and other clubs back then due to our success and "us against the world" attitude so they weren't going to do us any favours.
Interesting looking at the Metro zone map that Richmond was one of the few if only club that didn't get a long-term growth corridor.
