Coming up shortly so tune in.

Summary
* Tony Shaw said Wallace is respected by the media because he shows respect towards the media and understands their job unlike other coaches who mouth off at the media.
* Shaw also said yes he did say he wouldn't have picked up Cousins if he was coach but it's great now that he is at Richmond. He would like to interview Brian Cousins about Ben.
* Been a couple of amazing months with Cousins coming to the club. A two week period of walking through a media scrum at every training session before Xmas.
* Cuz is building up his training week by week. On modified training but he did most of training today and when he's out there he's training well.
* Shaw said we are developing a solid midfield. Lids and Tambling really came on last year. Foley said yeah we are building depth in the midfield.
* Getting tagged does make it harder but all the good players have to deal with it so you watch tapes of Judd and Kerr and try to pick up tips from them. Tags vary from week to week as a Ling does something different to someone else. So you discuss at team meetings each week.
* Forward line - opportunity for Jack, cleve, morton and Edwards to step and take responsibility this year with Richo out of the forward line. They all had pretty good years last year.
* Our aim is to improve on 2008 and as we finished ninth that obviously means playing finals.
* Shaw said he hadn't heard or seen anything about Cogs? Foley replied Cogs hasn't missed a beat this preseason after some hard times over the past few years with injury. Someone else we can add to the midfield group.
* After Axel had left Shaw said Cotch, Lids, Cousins adds class to our midfield. Then add Foley and Tuck. You need 10-12 mids who you can trust to stand up in the midfield and rotate through the half-back, half-forward flanks and the bench.
* Shaw's concern about us is our young defenders (can they back it up) and the pressure on our young forwards and also the ruck.

Great stuff OE, thanks for that, but again no confirmation on Cotchin's injury, I wish someone at the club would stand up and let us know what the hell is wrong with him and if he will be ready for round one..... :banghead. I know the achilies is playing up but to what degree, is it very serious or are they just managing it up to the NAB cup??? stuff, very frustraiting. We don't hear poo over here!!

I have heard some really good reports about Cogs from a few areas that suggest he is flying. I have heard he is doing the tough stuff as well as regaining his speed.
Brian Royal suggested he is a monty to play against Freo on the 15th of Feb.
Hope he has a great year, boy that would be a treat.

10-12 mids we can trust to stand up...
Cousins, Lids, Foley, Tuck, Cotchin, Tambling, Newman, Raines, Brown, Edwards, Connors, White, Thomson, Hislop, Johnson, Jackson, McMahon, Polo, Coughlin
Surely we can get 10 - 12 out of that group
-
Gee Tony if you're worried about our defenders what must you think about yours? ???

And since Richo is not a foward any more thn you have to add him to that list. The 10 -12 does incude the wingers.

I'm a Newy fan but I wouldn't call him a mid and Jordie isn't exactly a hard nut lol to be a midfielder either.
Rainesy needs to reinvent himself as a mid to survive IMO.
At the moment we have about half a dozen who we can consistently rely on. Cogs would be a bonus while the others are still to prove themselves. Hopefully as you say Gracie we can find another 4-6 guys this year from the rest on top of the Lids, Foley, Tuck, Cousins, Cotch, Richo :thumbsup. Browny and Johnson will be used as pinch-hitters in the midfield from now on. Even Blingers still needs to go to another level IMO. He's getting better but hasn't had his breakout year yet.

I was wondering where the 10-12 positions would be
Centre
Ruck Rover
Rover
2 wingers
3 on the bench
Gives you 8
So to get to 12 I assumed the two HBF would be included in the "midfield" as well as a HFF (say Cousins) and forward pocket (Brownie rotating through midfield). Therefore I added Newman and McMahon to the group

Fair enough Gracie and makes sense. I guess one other scenario is to have versatile midfielders who can rotate through the centre square and then to the flanks and pockets when "rested" as well as the bench. So you have 5-7 talls on the field (2-3 forwards, 2-3 backs and a ruckman) and then the rest are capable mids who are versatile enough to play in multiple "small" positions. I think the doggies were close to this in 2006 especially early on in that season in terms of smalls but they didn't and still don't have the tall structure to support it in the heat of finals. Geelong have Ablett, Chapman, etc who can play in the centre and on the flanks. Mackie can play small (really midsized) at either end of the ground. Hawks had Luke Hodge as that "quarterback" role across half-back even though he's a gun centre square mid as well. The likes of Bateman can also play in the middle and out on a flank. Crawford as he got older played more out on a flank (Sugar can do the same for us). They also have guys like Osborne and Ladson who aren't stars but are decent enough as second tier mids/flankers behind Hodge, Mitchell, Bateman, Lewis and the retired Crawford.
B: mid tall tall
HB: mid tall mid
C: mid mid mid
HF: mid tall mid
F: mid tall tall
R: ruck mid mid
Int: ruck tall/mid mid mid

From a games played perspective Tony is right there. Look at the average Geelong back line players games played and it'll be 180+ games. Ours will be around 30 and by the end of the year hopefully 50. Then it will be holding us in good stead. But rebuilding the back line has been Terry's last area of recruitment.
