Title: Five of the six backline spots settled, one up for grabs?

Wallace: We're pretty settled at the moment. That doesn't mean there aren't people coming through.Young Jayden Post who we just picked up I think is going to be an incredible player of the future but whether he steps straight into your line-up. We've probably balanced ours up over the last few years. It's probably fair if you look at ours there's one spot up for grabs in our backline. Jordan McMahon had more kicks than any other player at the Club as a quarteback coming off the HB line, Chris Newman, and then our 3 talls will play every week in McGuane, Thursfield and Moore. Schulz who is a beautiful user of the ball has been our 6th back down there. Then there's Raines and King coming back from injury who will be pushing for selection as well. On top of that there's Tambling who played some nice footy behind the ball in the second half of the year. So they're the guys vying for backline spots.
You would think the missing 6th spot is a small/midsized defender who can shutdown the small opposition forwards like a Milne, Medhurst or any of North's small forwards. On past form Kingy and Rainesy aren't the answer. Blingers did fairly well in the second half of the year down back but locked in a BP would take away his rebounding and use of his pace.

B:     ??            Moore     Thursfield
HB: Newman   McGuane   McMahon

Jordie's many fans  ;) will be happy he's one of the settled five lol.

No mention by Plough of Rance as a backline option  ???. You would think he is ahead of Postie in his first year who Terry gave a huge wrap.

Depending on match ups a mixture of Tambling and Schulz.
Tambling may have found his niche in the 2nd half of last year.

Great piece of old style coaching by Plough. Reminds me of my old playing days, at the breaks the coach would run through some of the 'best' players, would only name a few of the average players and deliberately leave out the best, which usually got them angry enough to go out and get 35 kicks instead of the 20 kicks they were going to get. The more Rance has to wonder about his 1st game of footy the better player it will make him when he gets there.

Rance would be good - if the coaches think he is ready

Even though TW mentioned Hislop as a potential small forward I think he would be a good candidate for the position given his speed and aggression. Strong too.

Tambling or Schulz depending on match ups.

That's the way I'd go.

I really liked Tamlbing runnng off the HB line  :clapping

Although they may throw Newman in the middle field once and awhile so that opens up a bit of spot there during the course of a game

Raines???
For mine Rainesy needs to reinvent himself even he did remain in the backline. Opposition clubs have worked him out and he can no longer just tuck the ball under the arm and run as far as he can. It worked in 2006 but he continually ran himself into trouble and traffic after that which caused turnovers. Rainesy needs to learn to look for first option and give it off. It's not NFL/NRL. The one thing in Rainesy's favour is he shouldn't need to play on a Nick Riewoldt ever again now out backline is more settled and has far more versatile options.

Agree

Wallace said "settled" not "cemented" as in we have found 5 guys who can do the job but that doesn't mean that Rance cannot come in over the top and knock one of the "settled" guys out.

Which guy wants it more?? = all good to me

Rance was in the backline group at training today as David King was talking to all the talls - Moore, Thursty, McGuane, Schulz plus Alex. So he's obviously still in our back 6 plans.
