Cousins up for Cleo Bachelor of the Year
AAP
January 21, 2009 06:08pm
DISGRACED AFL player Ben Cousins has emerged as a controversial contender for the 2009 Cleo Bachelor of The Year.
Cousins' face was among 200 hopefuls being pored over by female celebrity judges casting their votes for the annual competition at a Sydney restaurant today.
Former West Coast Eagles star Cousins, who's recently returned to training with Richmond following his drugs scandal, split the opinion of the judges.
But Cleo editor Sarah Oakes said Cousins was popular with the magazine's readers.
"He's one of those people that generated a lot of discussion about whether he is or isn't the kind of eligible bachelor that an Australian woman would be interested in dating,'' Oakes said.
"It's good to have those (who) polarise and those people that create some discussion.''
Video Hits presenter Faustina "Fuzzy" Agolley said Cousins was in her "top five''.
The list of the nation's hottest eligible bachelors included stars of sport, music and TV as well as lesser-known entrants, such as an environmentalist.
Popular entrants included singer Axle Whitehead, Underbelly stars Damien Walshe Howling, Alex Dimitriades and Gyton Grantley, as well as Packed To The Rafters actors including Hugh Sheridan, Angus McLaren and George Houvardas.
Sneaky Sound System's Damon Downey, DJ Kaz James, AFL player Lance Franklin, Seven Network sports presenter Ben Damon and chef Alex Kearns were other favourites.
Former Home And Away star Beau Brady, Australia's Next Top Model stylist Jonathan Pease and former Big Brother contestant Gaelen Walker also split opinion.
Oakes said they wanted an all-round guy.
"We're looking for a guy that is charismatic, successful, ambitious, and sexy,'' Oakes said.
Presenter Bianca Dye said she had a soft spot for "geeks''.
"You get sucked in by the rock stars but you've got to go for the geek, cause the geeks are just really happy to have you,'' Dye said.
Australia's Next Top Model judge Charlotte Dawson said someone with "great values'' was the key, while television personality Lyndsey Rodrigues wanted an animal or child lover.
Other judges included presenters Erica Heynatz, Toni Pearen and Lizzy Lovette, and publicist Roxy Jacenko.
MTV VJ Ruby Rose was due to attend but was a notable absentee.
Fifty finalists will be announced in March.
Presenter Jason Dundas is the reigning bachelor.

jealousy is a curse.
But I find cheatin worse!!!
Of being a recovered drug addict? I don't think so, although I really respect his efforts to rehab.
Not particularly envious of him getting caught either, if you're married put that one to your missus!!!
My point was more around how many women are going to vote for a guy with that background.

Cousins pulls out of bachelor comp
AAP | January 22, 2009 07:06pm
DISGRACED AFL player Ben Cousins is understood to have pulled out of the 2009 Cleo Bachelor of the Year competition before the magazine decided its top 50 finalists list.
Cousins' face was yesterday among 200 being pored over by female celebrity judges who were deciding on the 50 finalists for the competition.
But it is understood that Cousins' management at Richmond AFL club, where he recently began training after his drugs scandal, declined the invitation.
Cleo editor Sarah Oakes said Cousins had received a large number of nominations from readers, and therefore had been included in the list.
"Because he was nominated so many times by the readers we wanted to see if he made the list,'' Oakes said.
"If he made the list we would have tried again, if overwhelmingly the judges wanted him and thought he would be perfect then we would've done the ground work.''

You can see why he pulled out of the contest when the media used his nomination as another chance to put up another 43 pic gallery of his past titled "Ben Cousins, from hero to fallen star".

Cousins a 'marketing stunt'
Daily Telegraph | January 24, 2009 12:00am
CLEO magazine has been accused of using AFL bad boy Ben Cousins as a marketing stunt for its Bachelor Of The Year competition and he's not happy about it.
The recovering addict's photo and profile was included in a folio of 100-odd contenders for the title examined by a judging panel at a Cleo function on Wednesday.
The media was present and a report then went around the country saying Cousins was a "shock" contender for the title, and could make the final 50.
But Cousins specifically declined an offer to be involved via his Richmond AFL club three weeks ago, and was astonished to see his name promoting the competition.
A senior club insider said Cousins didn't want to be involved because of the headlines it would - and did - generate, and that it would divert from his comeback.
"Ben is a recovering addict and doesn't need any more attention than he already gets and that's why he and the club declined Cleo's offer three weeks ago," the insider said.
"Ben, his management and the club were not interested, yet Cleo put his name out and that's very disingenuous."
Another media report issued on Thursday night said Cousins had "pulled out" because of the headlines.
"That's rubbish too - Ben didn't pull out because he was never in, and now he looks like a idiot because there's an impression he took part and then got cold feet."
The final 50 must agree to take part, and if Cousins is voted in by readers he will decline.
Cleo editor Sarah Oakes said the magazine did not issue a press release about Cousins and was unaware how the media discovered his inclusion - even though it was a press call.
"We don't want to create any negative publicity for Ben in any way and we did not set out to do that - it was meant to be confidential," Oakes said.

My advise to Ben.
Ignore it all. There's always going to be arses that will try to profit from others with or without their approval. It has happened now it's time to let it go. It's simply not important.
Personally don't think he looks like an idiot. Sure nobody on this site thinks he looks like an idiot.
Just live your life, do your training, and get yourself onto the ground for round one against Carlton where we will pummel the Bloosers and show you exactly how much noise the Yellow and Black army can make. At that moment all this will fade into insignificance and you will remember exactly why you love football and what it's all about.

Ben says thanks....

Thanks for passing it on OX

Ben annoyed by mag stunt
By Luke Dennehy
Sunday Herald-Sun, 25 JAN 2009, Page 127
BEN Cousins' name was thrown up during the week as one of the potential 50 Cleo Bachelor Of The Year entrants, but it looks as if it was a marketing stunt by the magazine.
And anyway, Cousins may not even be a bachelor anymore. He was spotted kissing a mystery brunette at Riva on the St Kilda Marina yesterday afternoon after enjoying lunch with a group of friends.
It appears Cousins was never seriously planning on entering the competition. His club, Richmond, did not want him to be involved, either.
Therefore, you can imagine Cousins' surprise when his name was mentioned in relation to the competition when he had said no to an offer to take part a few weeks ago.
Sources said Cousins and the club's representatives were furious.
Cousins' inadvertent involvement in the competition came about during a media call with judges in Sydney last week.
Cleo magazine editor Sarah Oakes said the magazine never intended to put Cousins' name out there, despite the fact it was a media call.
"We don't want to create any negative publicity for Ben in any way and we did not set out to do that -- it was meant to be confidential,'' Oakes said.
